It took eighteen! “The caravan looked alright. It had a bulge on the right side where the bench had fallen down after the floor collapsed but I didn’t realise the extent of rot it had. When the wall linings were off and cabinetry out, you could put your foot through the walls,” explains Steve. To get the caravan into his garage, he deflated the tyres then rigged up a frame to support the roof. The flooring was replaced with 18mm marine ply and internal wooden walls with treated timber. The original structure was untreated, explaining the rot. Six months into the project, an additional steel frame was fitted around the chassis for strengthening along with new tail and park lights, axle and springs to bring the caravan to warrant of fitness standard. Aluminium bubble wrap was used for insulation, which Steve says is extremely warm. The caravan’s lights and fridge were rewired to 12 volt, allowing the house batteries to run for three days before needing to be re-charged, and a 150 watt solar panel was fitted to the roof. Internally, the caravan was lined with plywood. Steve then constructed the internal joinery, including a curved wall wardrobe, new kitchen bench unit, double bed base to accommodate a comfortable mattress, seat bases and a table. Badges, coins and bank notes collected on Steve and Lyn’s travels, were wedged between a resin cover and the Rimu table top. Friends and family added their touch, helping create some part of the caravan or gifting accessories for its interior. The tail lights were custom built and represent a 1961 Impala; the car which will eventually tow the caravan. “Only the chassis rails and one piece of wood by the door are original,” says Steve. Steve and Lyn often talked about owning a retro caravan to take on holidays. The 1966 Freeway cost $3,000 originally, and around $18,000 to renovate. Steve says he is unlikely to renovate another and suggests anyone considering buying a caravan to restore, check underneath for rust in the chassis and rot in the wooden floor. “Rot in the floor has probably come from somewhere else so there’s likely to be rot all the way down,” advises Steve. From dented and battered, Steve has completely transformed the caravan into a stunning semi-retro, comfortable holiday home on wheels. However, he says it is like an old car: there is always something that could be done.
