Restored gun emplacements to reopen
• By Jess Gibson
A PIECE of history tucked away
at Godley Head has been restored
and is to reopen to the public.
Gun emplacements damaged in
the February 22, 2011 earthquake
have recently been reinstated at
the Godley Head coastal defence
battery.
Built in 1939, the battery is
ranked as one of the top ten New
Zealand coastal defence heritage
sites.
In the early years of World War
2, people living in Canterbury
were comforted that the two
six inch long-range guns of the
fort ensured their city was not
defenceless against a surprise
attack.
The fort was once staffed by
more than 400 men and women
Spate of suspicious fires on Port Hills
• By Sophie Cornish and
Jess Gibson
Two suspicious fire have been
lit in the same place in the Port
Hills in less than a week.
Four crews from Sumner,
Woolston, Central and Governors
Bay attended the 40m x
10m blaze Evans Pass Rd about
3.30am on Monday.
Sumner Volunteer Fire Brigade
chief fire officer Daryl Sayer said
the fire was extinguished quickly
but crews stayed for about an
hour to make sure it did not flare
up in dry areas.
A similar early morning blaze,
of about the same size, happened
on the same road last Tuesday.
Police are investigating both
fires, which have been deemed
suspicious.
It is the third large suspicious
fire in the Port Hills area this
month.
On February 12, fire crews battled
a fire that burnt through 6ha
of native reserve off Tunnel Rd
(State Highway 74) in Heathcote,
between Port Hills and Ferry Rds.
Fire and Emergency New
Zealand fire investigator Wayne
Hamilton said anyone with information
about the fires should
contact police on 105.
He wanted to thank the public
for alerting FENZ to Monday
morning’s fire.
Said Mr Sayer: “My concerns
are that [these fires] are damaging
walking tracks and the
wildlife and plant life that goes
with those. But more concerning
is that even though we have good
safety measures in place, we may
end up with our personnel becoming
injured as a result of this
thoughtless action.”
Water
restrictions
are in place
Level 4 water restrictions are now in place
for Akaroa, Duvauchelle and Takamatua.
This means no outdoor water use.
We’ve made this decision as local streams are
very low and we’re expecting hot, dry weather
to continue. For more information, check the
