The vision of volunteers
is to turn the reserve back
to its original native vegetation
and wildlife, providing
for species survival, biological
diversity, water and
soil conservation.
Another goal is to see
it become a community
resource that would allow
people a connection to
natural heritage, passive
recreation, education and a
link in a biological corridor
from the sea to the summit.
“Drayton Reserve
volunteers get all of their
plants given to them by the
city council, but Trees For
Canterbury grow a lot of
the plant stock for the city
council so it was the most
simple way.”
Ms Laing is a member of
the Redcliffs/Te Rae Kura
A city council spokesman
told Bay Harbour News that
“council and ECan staff
will be meeting within the
next month.
“When we have feedback
we will provide it to the
affected community.”
Said Dr McIntosh: “As
time goes past it’s getting
harder as some of the rocks
are getting covered by
wind blown sand in places
and that’s going to make
it a harder job to get rid of
them.”
“The fundamental situation
hasn’t changed at all.
We are monitoring it at least
once a month, taking measurements
and photos and
we’ve had several geologists
look at the situation.”
Dr McIntosh said the
beach so uncomfortable to
walk on that users “can’t
walk with bare feet on
the areas that have been
covered with rocks and
stones.”
Linwood-Central-Heathcote
Community Board
member said also believes
Eco Village Group, which
was launched by Redcliffs
Residents’ Association in
response to the climate and
ecological emergency.
She said one of the environmental
issues she will
be interested to keep track
of along the way is water.
“At the moment, Northland
is in drought and
there are people running
out of water, so we will be
carrying [3 to 4L of] our
own between sections.”
Ms Laing said the
bike ride, which includes
28,000m of climbing, will be
her hardest bike ride to date.
She said she is most
looking forward to biking
through trails in
north island that she has
never done before like the
Hauraki Rail Trail and the
Waikato River Trails.
there has been “no marked
improvement of surface
stones, rocks and gravel
at various sites along the
beach.”
“The Redcliffs Residents’
Association are rightly
questioning the longer-term
implications of the impact
that recent construction
work has had. Clarity is
required about the impact
of the rocks and spoil on the
Ms Laing has no set
expectation of how long
it will take the group to
finish the trail, but said it
will likely take somewhere
between 23 and 30 days.
“The first week I just want
to settle in and get through
without any injuries. A
lot of people who fail, fail
within that time period.
Going too hard in the first
instance is no good.”
She said the group will be
staying in accommodation
but will be carrying a tent
and camping gear for nights
where there is none nearby.
Clifton Beach spoiled by rocks
NUISANCE: Photos taken by the Redcliffs Residents’
Association this month show there is still a problem
with rock spoil at the beach near Shag Rock.
beach environment. Hopefully
a way forward will be
provided when council and
ECan are scheduled to meet
with interested parties next
month.’’
