The plan comes in the aftermath of the deaths of sisters Tayla and Sunmara Alexander in a car crash last year John Day – There is no need to close any part of the road at this time. The problem is not the road, it is the driver. Sixty years ago my father taught his children very carefully how to drive the family car. Dad was someone special and we listened to him. We cared for his car, and we did not need to speed on country roads because dad had set reasonable standards by example. Kevin Crozier – What a joke. As a resident living on the drag strip called by normal people Governors Bay Rd I can assure you it has absolutely nothing to do with the road. It is solely the drivers. We live in a 50km/h zone that regularly has vehicles travelling at 100km/h or more. This is especially so late at night. Closing the Summit Rd will just mean these idiots will find some where else to kill themselves. At least up there there there are far fewer residents to keep awake all night. My neighbours and I have all given up phoning the police as we all get the same response that “we dont have the resources to police over there.” If you want to stop these deaths then get the cars and idiots off the road. Geoff Farrant – I am probably the most regular user of the Summit Rd from the Kiwi to Gebbies. I own a farm just past Kennedys Bush. I consider the road a cyclist track which I use. I have had three incidents where I have taken evasive action in eight years. Twice I was forced off the road by forestry trucks. They should not be up there. And yes the 60km/h is appropriate. The new law just sets up the rules and allows enforcement. The main problems occur at night. I have had four cars into or through my fences. Two stolen and one burnt. So basically there is no problem. Just a few non-law abiding people who risk all and will one day cause some significant damage to the area. But we cannot keep closing areas and making rules. There are many evening users such as the photographers who watch the southern lights. There are some things that need to be done promptly. The road up to the sign of the Kiwi needs addition of passing cycleways on the way up. In many cases this could be done cheaply with maybe some clever piping and concrete covers. But I leave that to the engineers. This is the busiest and most scary cycle route in Canterbury. It should have been the first target for a cycleway in the region. Downhill is less of a problem as the cyclists move more in line with traffic speeds. And, of course, more quality parking areas. A safety issue as parking on a narrow road just makes it dangerous. Sealed marked parking encourages better use. Andrea Davis – I read the article about the Summit Rd and it should completely be closed at night. There is nothing up on the road to do at night except get into trouble. It would be a move in the right direction for keeping the land and the people safe. Pat McIntosh – Thanks for the opportunity for feedback. There is nothing wrong with the Summit Rd – it is a perfectly normal hill road, in other words it is narrow and twisty with drop-offs. People have crashes on it because of the way they drive, not because of the road. It would be a great shame if the average driver was deprived of the access and the stunning views because a few people get behind the wheel when they are drunk or stoned, or drive too fast for the conditions and lose control. This could happen on any road in New Zealand, and indeed does. But a lower speed limit and maybe a few chicanes, rumble strips or speed bumps might help deter dangerous driving up there. Dave Hammond – The Summit Rd is beautiful to drive both day and night and the experience should not be denied to the many because of a few who decide to test their driving skills at the risk of their own and other people’s lives. To those who see the road as a challenge, no amount of speed limits or safety barriers will stop them. Put in bumps and extra police patrols and take the cars off the offenders, but don’t put that lovely drive out of bounds to the majority of peaceful appreciators. Readers respond to last week’s article about Lyttelton’s Mitre Tavern, which has become increasingly derelict since it was closed due to damage from the February 22, 2011, earthquake. Barry Smart – Would be great to have a copy of the new tavern. I well remember going there prior to the earthquakes. Bob Duff: I was a barman at the Mitre for eight years during the 90s. The first beer I ever had in a bar was at the Mitre. It holds the oldest licence in Canterbury and has a rich history and unique place in people’s hearts in Lyttelton. I would love to see it rebuilt to its original weatherboard exterior with a full length veranda along the front. Upstairs could be backpacker accommodation or something similar and a theme restaurant/ bar with the history of Lyttelton and the characters who drank and worked in Lyttelton. How do people move on when that is thrust in your face every time you drive to Lyttelton? At the end of the day it’s just about money to Mr Ward. We are monitoring it at least once a month, taking measurements and photos and we’ve had several geologists look at the situation.” Dr McIntosh said the beach so uncomfortable to walk on that users “can’t walk with bare feet on the areas that have been covered with rocks and stones.” Linwood-Central-Heathcote Community Board member said also believes Eco Village Group, which was launched by Redcliffs Residents’ Association in response to the climate and ecological emergency. She said one of the environmental issues she will be interested to keep track of along the way is water. “At the moment, Northland is in drought and there are people running out of water, so we will be carrying [3 to 4L of] our own between sections.” Ms Laing said the bike ride, which includes 28,000m of climbing, will be her hardest bike ride to date.
