ON THE SUBJECT OF...

Formosan Termites

Joe and his wife raised three great children

up north. The couple saved their money,

so they could move to Florida to retire.

They paid for a nice home in cash after

getting the termite inspection report, as is

common in Florida, but what they didn’t

understand was that the inspection report

is only for visible signs of infestations. They

didn’t know that the most destructive termites

in Florida are the Formosan subterranean

termites that often show no visible

signs of infestation until they have caused

Henderson significant structural Pest damage. Elimination,

Six months into living in their brandnew

home, the couple realized that the

upstairs floor seemed soft. When their

contractor came out and pulled back

the flooring, they saw the subflooring

destroyed. They had bought a block

home and had a contract for termite

protection; however, they learned that

by Johnie Henderson, Owner Henderson Pest Elimination

the contract excluded Formosan subterranean

termites and their extensive damage.

Then, the couple learned that in

the attic, where the insulation covered

the truss, the Formosan subterranean termites

had also done significant structural

damage, and none of it was covered by

their homeowners insurance.

Now Joe and his wife have jobs in

Florida, a mortgage on their home, and

MEDICINE 2.0

A New Way to Age

Throughout the past eight years,

Florida Center for Hormones

and Wellness has established itself

as a leader in hormone optimization

therapy. John Carrozzella,

M.D., is a highly trained international

hormone expert with a master’s

degree in nutritional and metabolic

medicine. Recently, the center

moved to a new location in the

Fountains of Bay Hill, affording the

practice an opportunity to expand

its services in preventative health

care and long-term wellness. The increase

in space and staff allows the

center to take on and tackle more

preventative issues.

“Hormone balancing is a foundation

for healthy living and solid

wellness,” Dr. Carrozzella said. “As

we move forward, we want to focus

not just on hormones but on things

that will truly enhance wellness and

vitality as people age. Oftentimes,

traditional medicine tends to be reactive.

We believe in a more proactive

approach. By looking at specific

health factors and overall physiology,

we may be able to prevent

certain health diseases associated

with aging. Everyone wants to live

longer, but no one wants to live to

be 100 years old, sick and infirm.

We aim to improve vitality as well

as longevity.”

“Anti-aging” is a term that Dr.

Carrozzella is not fond of, because

“no one can actually stop aging. It’s

a natural progression of life. I like to

refer to what we do as ‘age management,’

wherein we

can manage the ways

people age and minimize

the risks of ailments

and the overall

impact of aging.”

One age-related

health issue that

many people experience

is an increase

in their blood sugar

levels. Once the levels

reach a certain point,

@K&R Photography they are considered

PROMOTIONAL FEATURE

@K&R Photography

“pre-diabetic” and are typically prescribed

medication. However, in following

Dr. Carrozzella’s “proactive

approach” at an earlier age, the patient’s

bloodwork, insulin and sugar

metabolism are monitored and recommendations

are made regarding

lifestyle and hormone balance in an

effort to reverse or slow down rising

blood sugar levels, drastically

minimizing the risk of developing

diabetes.

“We want to try to prevent illness

rather than react to it,” Dr.

Carrozzella said. “Studies show

that a premenopausal woman has a

1 in 7 chance of developing heart

disease. After menopause, the risk

increases to 1 in 3. However, if you

optimize their hormones and do the

metabolic things necessary, you can

return that risk back to 1 in 7 or even

less. You cannot stop the risk of heart

disease altogether, but with proper

treatment you can mitigate it.”

Dr. Carrozzella added that he is

“incredibly thankful for everyday

medicine and Western medicine”

and wants to work cooperatively

with them, because “when we do

have these conditions and diseases,

they give us the tools and medicines

to treat them. However, the power of

prevention is that it gives us the time

to observe and make the necessary

fine-tuning adjustments. For example,

we can reduce the risk of dementia

by nearly 80% by optimizing

hormones and focusing on nutrition.”

The treatments each patient receives

at Florida Center of Hormones

and Wellness are customized to their

individual needs. An in-depth screening

evaluation helps identify hormonal

imbalances or other underlying

issues that may be affecting the patient’s

overall health. Often people

are accepting of conditions they associate

with getting older without realizing

there are treatments to help,

including trouble sleeping.

“Some doctors try to manage

sleep with sleep inducers or drugs,

and often, the patient then faces

long-term problems or side effects,”

Dr. Carrozzella said. “Instead, we

try to bypass that by focusing on

nutrients, botanicals and lifestyle

changes, which our patients have

had great success with. We look at

the whole body, because everything

is related. It is better to look at one’s

overall health than to focus on a

single line item issue.”

Florida Center for Hormones and Wellness is located

at 7513 Sand Lake Road in Orlando. For more information,

SEEN

Students, teachers, staff and family members of Westbrooke

Elementary School’s community recently celebrated two exciting

events.

The school held it’s Mother Son 2020 at Wonderworks,

complete with The Outta Control Magic Comedy Dinner Show.

Wildcats showed up in force with 174 attendees. A special

thank-you goes out to Stacy Dass for coordinating such a special

night for moms and their sons.

Everyone also got into the Wildcat spirit on the 100th day of

versions of themselves.

This is one school that definitely makes learning fun!

Caring for a loved one with a chronic illness

is something millions of Americans do

every day. Whether it is a parent, spouse,

extended family member or friend, the

stress of caring for another adult can take

a toll.

“I have to do absolutely everything for

her,” said 70-year-old Anthony Cowels,

whose 71-year-old wife, Florence, was diagnosed

with multiple sclerosis in 1986. As

he watched her disease progress, his caregiver

responsibilities grew. What’s more,

for some of the years Anthony also cared

for his elderly parents, compounding his

responsibilities.

“It has been a long journey of caregiving,”

he said. “I try not to let it overwhelm

me. I always look for ways to do better.”

Anthony learned to care for both himself

and his wife better through useful tools,

education, friendship and by joining a caregiver

support group.

He said he can “interact with others who

identify with my situation.”

Family Caregiving: A Growing Trend

Anthony represents a growing number

of Americans who care for older or aging

loved ones. About 41 million family

caregivers in the U.S. provided an estimated

34 billion hours of care to an adult with

limitations in daily activities in 2017, noted

the AARP report Valuing the Invaluable:

2019 Update. What’s more, as the population

ages, caregiving demands are increasing

while the pool of potential caregivers is

decreasing.

As the report stated, Americans will have

more older relatives or close friends to potentially

care for than children in about 15

years. Officials of the U.S. Census Bureau

project that, by the year 2035, adults age

65-older will outnumber children under the

age of 18 for the first time in U.S. history.

This fundamental demographic shift is the

result of the aging of the U.S. population,

increasing longevity and a declining birth

rate.

Caring for Yourself

In addition to helping with self-care activities

like bathing, dressing and going to

MATTER OF HEALTH

Helping Caregivers Care for Themselves

the bathroom, family caregivers today often

perform complex medical tasks, including

wound care, giving injections and handling

medical equipment. Tasks that were once

provided in hospitals and health care clinics

are increasingly the responsibility of family

members and friends, who are often given

little training or support.

While many family caregivers often report

positive feelings in their roles, such

as a sense of purpose or connection with

their loved one, it often comes with feelings

of being overwhelmed. Exhaustion,

worry, loneliness and financial stress are

common challenges caregivers face. If you

also work a full-time job, it can be even

more difficult to balance your needs and

responsibilities.

While you may not achieve a perfect

balance, it is important to prioritize your

physical and mental well-being, so you can

be there for the person you care for. The

following first steps can help you find some

balance as you navigate your caregiver

journey:

• Join a support group. Ask your

health care provider about local options.

Community centers are another good resource.

If you live in a remote area or

have difficulties commuting, online support

groups are another useful way to connect

with others in similar situations.

• Make time for yourself. When you care

for another person and have your own life

demands, it can feel as though there is little

time left in the day for yourself. Even if it is

just 15 minutes, make time to do something

you enjoy, such as walking or reading.

• Don’t be afraid to ask for help. No one

person can do it all. It takes a team to care

for someone, especially those with complex

medical conditions. You can start by asking

your provider about local health care

resources and reach out to family members

and friends for assistance.

It is important for family caregivers to stay

mentally and physically healthy, so they can

provide the best care possible to the growing

number of people who need support.
