Story & Photos // Sam C. Bowles These are a few of our favorite drinks Matt Park, barista at Quills in New Albany, has been working in the cofee business for more than eight years. As the crisp, cool weather of fall approaches, Park shared with us a few of his favorite fall drinks to warm up with. Miele One of Quills regular oferings, the Miele is an espresso latte with the added fall favors of honey and cinnamon. It’s the perfect drink for a fall day. Old Fashioned Inspired Cold Brew Another of Park’s favorite creations is a cold brew cofee with a bourbon and brown sugar simple syrup. The fusion of favors in this cofee homage to a classic cocktail is completed with the addition of orange peel. Cortado Another of Quills’ regular menu items, the Cortado is a favorite of Park’s 3-year-old daughter. (Park thinks more parents Cofee Shop Lingo for Dummies… Espresso…the base of all drinks, espresso is a concentrated form of cofee created through high temperature/high pressure brewing. A standard shot is about two ounces. Macchiato…a double shot of espresso with a touch of steamed milk Cortado…equal parts espresso and steamed milk Cappuccino…a double shot of espresso with steamed milk and topped with frothed milk foam Latte…a double shot of espresso mixed with larger amounts of steamed milk and less froth. Quills ofers a both 12- and 16-ounce sizes. Americano…espresso mixed with hot water. The Americano originated during World War 2 when American troops in Europe requested hot water to dilute the cofee, which was stronger than what they were accustomed. Top: A Miele. The Cortado, which is equal parts espresso and steamed milk, could be imitated at home by mixing regular cofee with equal parts milk. Park encourages those who appreciate good cofees from around the world to consider a home brew system like the Hario V-60, which produces a clearer and more favorful brew.
