Commission Chairman and Jefersonville resident Philip Hendershot is an environmental engineer and has been chairman of the commission since 2001. He described the ramp of of the Big Four as a “fantastic piece of architecture” that he cannot wait to ride his bike on and cross the river. “I use all of the pieces that are done now and some that are only partially done, I have to confess,” he laughed. A self-described “river rat” he is excited about the exploration opportunities that the trail will provide, from the “nooks and crannies” of the riverfront to the up close views of peaceful Silver Creek that most people have never seen, to the unique railroad bridges and their birds eye views. David Boome is an architect and became a commission member when “Phil showed up on my doorstep,” he laughed. He speculated that Jefersonville needs to prepare itself for an infux of visitors. He anticipates seeing new shops opening In New Albany, the Ohio River takes a diferent tone. Treelined riverbanks, wildlife, and the city’s waterfront park and amphitheater lend a peaceful atmosphere to the mostly completed Greenway in that area. Long-time Commission Member Pat Leist-Stumler described the Greenway as a “peaceful way to start the morning” and a good opportunity for relaxation and exercise. The Ohio River is calming and beautiful, she said, “We’re so fortunate to be on the river and to take advantage of it, which has never been done before on our side of it.” New Albany, Jefersonville and Clarksville all have a diferent view of the river and she said the combination connected by the Greenway will be dynamic. Commission Member Ed Jerdonek is a recent appointee by the governor. He sees the beauty but his expertise also is economic development. He has seen an unfortunate lack of collaboration and funding with private businesses and organizations. “I think this is probably one of the most signifcant economic development opportunities, and I’m not quite sure that local government and the business community understand to the extent that it can be,” he said. “I think that once this Greenway is completed, and especially if we can get the K&I access, which would be a home run for the region, that it would be a home run for CSX, too.” He imagines the opportunities for a Kentucky/Indiana loop. “This system in both states will attract people from all over September/October 2013 • 44
