Colors for fall Check out these unexpected autumn knockouts Although we all tend to think about fall color in terms of scarlet, orange and golden tree leaves and redfaced <strong>Indiana</strong> University football fans there are many grasses, perennials and shrubs you can have in your yard that are just as colorful and will produce more immediate results. Many are not as well known as they should be, or require some thought when planting, but the incredible range of colors and texture make them all worthwhile year after year, and will add excitement to your yard. Here’s a few you should consider — and they should be planted right now to deliver the color next fall. Actually, fall is a great time to plant almost any trees, shrubs and, of course, bulbs. There’s less competition from weeds, a plant’s roots will continue to grow until hard frosts and our planting energy returns after being melted in summer heat. Lespedeza, a.k.a. Bush Clover This is a fowering shrub that always draws rave reviews in the Hidden Hill landscape followed by the inevitable question: “What is that?” Its Latin name is Lespedeza thunbergii. It’s an easily grown shrub that will get about four to fve feet tall with beautiful arching branches tipped with pealike pink, purple or lavender fowers. Even before it fowers its delicate, bluish- green leaves give it an elegant look that’s rare this time of year. The news gets even better. Lespedeza will grow in full sun to part shade, takes almost any kind of soil, tolerates drought and all you have to do to maintain it is cut it to the ground in late fall. It will always rise again, slowly at frst and then into its full glory by September or October. It will spread in time, so don’t plant it too close to other shrubs, the house or the mailbox; we may lose Saturday delivery as it is. It also has a reputation in some quarters for being invasive. We’ve had no problems with that – but usually cut it back soon after the fowers have faded to avoid problems. My favorite A pink Korean mum. Photo courtesy The New York Botanical Garden. lespedeza cultivar is “Gibralter.” The pink-purple fowers last only about a month, but it’s a great month. Pink Muhly Grass Next up in the what-is-that category in our landscape is the delightful ‘Pink Muhly Grass’ — a plant that lightens up the fall landscape with giant bursts of cotton candy colored plumes. It’s Latin name — and hence the “Mu-lee Grass” title – is Muhlenbergia capillaries. It can be hard to fnd in our area, perhaps because it’s not been considered reliably hardy here in the past. But either the planting zone experts were wrong again – go fgure – or global warming does have some beneft, but it’s done very well in our landscape for many years, albeit backed up against a south facing stone wall for added protection. Another possible problem with Muhly Grass popularity is that it’s not an especially attractive grass until fall when the pink begins to pop, but then it can and will dominate the landscape. It’s a tough grass, doing very well in average to sandy soil in full sun, and can easily endure some drought. It will NOT take wet areas; good drainage is a must. Better yet, the pink grass can be used indoors in fower arrangements and even as a centerpiece for fall barbeques. It will get about three feet tall and wide, helps create an incredible border, or use as specimens dotted around the yard.
