Blood donorswith type O blood and allplatelet donors are especiallyneeded right now.Donating blood is a safe processand people should not hesitateto give or receive blood.There are no data or evidencethat this coronavirus can betransmissible by blood transfusion,and there have been noreported cases worldwide oftransmissions for any respiratoryvirus, including this coronavirus,from a transfusion.The Red Cross only collectsblood from individuals who arehealthy and feeling well at thetime of donation – and who meetother eligibility requirements,available at RedCrossBlood.org. At each blood drive anddonation center, Red Cross employeesfollow thorough safetyprotocols including wearinggloves, routinely wiping downdonor-touched areas, usingsterile collection sets for everydonation, and preparing the armfor donation with an asepticscrub. These mitigation measureswill help ensure bloodrecipient safety, as well as staffand donor safety in reducingcontact with those who maypotentially have this respiratoryinfection.Blood drive hosts playimportant roleBlood drive hosts also playa critical role in maintaining asufficient blood supply and areasked to keep hosting blooddrives for patients who rely onlifesaving blood. The need forblood is constant, and volunteerdonors are the only sourceof blood for those in need oftransfusions.The Red Cross, with the helpof its blood drive hosts andblood donors, can help ensurethe safety and availability ofthe U.S. blood supply for patientsincluding accident andburn victims, heart surgery andorgan transplant patients, andthose receiving treatment forleukemia, cancer or sickle celldisease.“Keep giving, keep hostingblood drives,” said Hrouda.“Patients across the countryneed our help.”Red Cross committed toblood supply safetyThe top priority of the RedCross is the safety of our valuedstaff, blood donors and bloodrecipients, and we are committedto transparency with theAmerican public during thisevolving public health emergency.There are no data orevidence that this coronaviruscan be transmissible by bloodtransfusion, and there have beenno reported cases worldwide oftransmissions for any respiratoryvirus including this coronavirus,from a transfusion.Nonetheless, the Red Crosshas implemented new blood donationdeferrals out of an abundanceof caution.Individuals are asked topostpone their donation for28 days following:• Travel to China and itsspecial administrative regions,Hong Kong and Macau, as wellas Iran, Italy and South Korea;• Diagnosis of COVID-19,contact with a person who hasor is suspected to have the virus.As the situation evolves,the Red Cross will continueto evaluate all emerging risksin collaboration with the U.S.Food and Drug Administration,Centers for Disease Controland Prevention and industrypartners to determine if additionalintervention strategiesare needed. Together, we standready to keep the Americanpublic informed and prepared.Blood donation process:A blood donation takes aboutan hour from start to finish,but the actual donation itselfonly takes about 8-10 minutes.Donors can also save up to15 minutes at the blood driveby completing a RapidPass®.With RapidPass®, donors completethe pre-donation readingand health history questionnaireonline, on the day of donation,from a mobile deviceor computer. High school studentsand other donors 18 yearsof age and younger also mustmeet certain height and weightrequirements.Meet the brewersNATICK — The suds wereflowing and the talk wasabout hop earlier this monthas Peabody’s Granite CoastBrewing helped support theMass Brewers Guild by raisinga pint and money for the tradeassociation.Nine breweries were representedat the event which raised$3,250 for the trade associationand was held at LookoutFarm in Natick. Produced byCraft’d Company, the gatheringwas billed as an opportunity to“meet the brewers freshmanClass of 2020.”“This event has attractedquite a following and attendeesare excited to return year afteryear to meet the state’s newestcrop of brewers,” says KatieStinchon, executive directorof the Mass Brewers Guild.“Giving craft beer fans face timewith brewers while they heartheir start-up story, and samplesome of the state’s newest beeris a unique twist on a beer festival.”This is the fourth yearthat the Mass Brewers Guildhas hosted this event.Jeff Marquis of Granite CoastBrewing donated his beer andtime to the cause, sharing thebrewery’s business story, answeringquestions, and talkingabout his craft in 12-minute intervalswhile craft beer loverssampled their suds.
