On peut identifier sans difficulté la graphie bien caractéristique de cet artiste originaire
de Pesaro et très influencé par son maître Taddeo Zuccaro. Ce groupe de personnages
est probablement une première idée pour les personnages du premier plan de La
Naissance de la Vierge peinte à fresque par l’artiste dans le chœur de Santa Maria
Aracoeli entre 1566 et 1568. D’autres études pour ce groupe sont répertoriées
par John Gere (« Drawings by Niccolo Martinelli, il Trometta », Master Drawings,
1963, I, n° 4, p. 3-18, pl. 1-15b) ou sont passées en vente publique (Christie’s,
29/01/2015, lot 6).
The characteristic style of this artist from Pesaro, profoundly affected by his master
Taddeo Zuccaro, can be recognized without any difficulty. This group of figures may
be an initial sketch for the foreground of The Birth of the Virgin painted in fresco in
the choir of Santa Maria Aracoeli in Rome between 1566 and 1568. A number
of studies for this fresco have been identified by John Gere (“Drawings by Niccolo
Martinelli, il Trometta”, Master Drawings, 1963, I, n° 4, p. 3-18, pl. 1-15b), while
others have appeared at auctions (Christie’s, 29/01/2015, lot 6).
