Franceso Zuccarelli
Pitigliano 1702 - Florence 1788
Deux cavaliers
Two horsemen
papier beige
Pen and brown ink, brown wash over black chalk, heightened with white on buff
coloured paper
188 x 264 mm (7 3 /8 x 10 3 /8 in.)
With his pictorial technique of skilfully mixing ink and white gouache, Francesco
Zuccarelli multiplied the studies of landscapes and figures. Numerous small horsemen
similar to these two fill his paintings and are reminiscent of the figures depicted by his
fellow artist, the Venetian battle scene painter, Francesco Simonini, whose compositions
Zuccarelli also engraved.
