L’attribution de cet étrange dessin reste à trouver : une femme à la peau probablement
de couleur, mais grimée de blanc et portant un madras noué sur la tête, termine son
dîner assise contre un mur couvert de graffitis. À ses pieds, un amoncellement d’objet
qui rappelle une brocante, dont une gravure qui évoque l’autoportrait de Poussin et
un buste en plâtre. Le maquillage blanc pourrait évoquer une comédienne ou une
artiste de cirque, qui comptaient la présence de beaucoup de personnalités noires
au XIX e siècle, certains originaires des Caraïbes. Le madras noué sur la tête rappelle
Maria l’Antillaise photographiée par Nadar, ou encore la fameuse Maria Martinez,
guitariste cubaine soutenue par Théophile Gautier. Les graffitis sur les murs confirment
l’atmosphère bohème de la scène.
The attribution of this strange drawing has yet to be established. A woman with
seemingly dark skin but with white makeup on her face and a madras kerchief tied on
her head finishes her dinner reclining against a wall which is covered with caricature
images. A jumble of objects at her feet, including an engraving which evokes Poussin’s
self-portrait and a plaster bust, suggests a flea market. The white makeup could mean
that she is a comedian or a circus performer, among whom there were many black
people in the 19 th century, some from the Caribbean. The madras tied on the woman’s
head is reminiscent of Maria l’Antillaise photographed by Nadar and of famous
Maria Martinez, Cuban guitarist supported by Théophile Gautier. The graffiti on the
walls confirms the bohemian atmosphere of the scene.
