Angelica and Medoro are usually depicted together carving their names on a tree
trunk. The young woman is shown alone in the present work. Her straight profile, her
long hands, and her elegant figure are reminiscent of Louis Gauffier’s style, notably in
his Telemachus, Calypso and Eucharis (Audap Mirabaud 14 March 2016, lot 38,
signed and dated 1787, 8 7 /8 x 11 7 /16 in.) and another picture of an unidentified
literary subject (Sotheby’s, 27 June 2002, lot 76, oil on canvas, 9 7 /16 x 11 13 /16 in.,
signed). However, Anna Ottani Cavina does not recognize the finesse of Gauffier’s
landscapes in this sketch painted rapidly on paper. Gauffier also painted a picture
of a young woman in a landscape, seated at the foot of a tree, carving a name on
its trunk (Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford, Connecticut). Although its composition is
entirely different from the present work, the common point in imagery is however
worth mentioning. This neoclassical and ‘precious’ style can be seen in some works
produced later, such as Orpheus and Eurydice painted by Louis Ducis in 1826. Like
the present oil on paper, it has similar simplified volumes, geometric facial features, as
well as the details of long fingers and multiple flowers in the grass.
