Cette aquarelle reprend un pastel conservé à Vienne au Miniaturkabinett de Schönbrunn,
autrefois attribué à l’époux de Marie-Thérèse d’Autriche, Franz I Stéphane, mais plus
récemment à Liotard par Neil Jeffares. L’œuvre correspond en effet à « un petit tableau
qui représente une dispute pour des Marons (sic) » exposée par Liotard au Salon de
l’Académie de Saint-Luc en 1752. La scène est chargée d’une connotation sexuelle
évidente, traitée avec humour : un jeune homme veut forcer une jeune femme à
toucher des marrons, tandis qu’une deuxième les réprimande tout en essayant de les
atteindre elle aussi. La troisième, sur la droite, les bras croisés, observe la scène avec
désapprobation.
The present work is made after a pastel belonging to the Miniaturkabinett de Schönbrunn
in Vienna, formerly attributed to Maria Theresa of Austria’s spouse, Francis I, and
recently given to Liotard by Neil Jeffares. The watercolour corresponds to ‘a small
picture representing a quarrel over
chestnuts’ which Liotard exhibited at
the 1752 Salon of the Académie de
Saint-Luc. The scene is replete with
obvious sexual connotations and
treated with great humour: a young
man tries to make a young woman
touch the chestnuts, whereas another
reprimands them while trying to reach
them too. The third woman on the
right with her arms folded watches
the scene with disapprobation.
