LifeCare looking
for volunteers
By Dedra Cordle
Staff Writer
As the chief executive officer of LifeCare
Alliance, Charles Gehring recognizes the
vital role of volunteers.
Since taking the reins nearly two
decades ago, he said he has seen a number
of similar social service organizations
throughout the state and country fold due
to the lack of volunteers needed to support
their programs.
“We just cannot survive without them,”
he said.
During his tenure, Gehring said he
made the recruitment of volunteers a priority
in the five counties the organization
serves. He said to this day he remains
grateful for the overwhelming support
they have shown.
“We have thousands of active volunteers
participating in our programs and
services,” he said. “I cannot thank them
enough for all that they do.”
While the numbers of volunteers fluctuate
before and after the major holidays,
Gehring said they have been fortunate to
have their active volunteers ready to provide
assistance as need be. Now, he said,
those active volunteers are needed more
than ever and the organization is requesting
new volunteers to assemble.
“They are desperately needed to help
provide services in several of our programs,”
said Gehring.
Like most businesses and organizations,
LifeCare Alliance has been impacted
by the emergence of a novel coronavirus.
The organization, said Gehring, has taken
steps to weather the outbreak but changes
have had to be made.
“We have had to close all 40 of our dining
centers throughout the counties we
serve,” he said, referring to Champaign,
Franklin, Logan, Madison and Marion
counties.
The dining centers, he added, were a
hub of activity where the patrons, a majority
of whom are older adults or those with
medical and physical challenges, congregated
to eat and chat and see friends.
“Due to the closure of our dining centers,”
said Gehring, “more than 700 people
have had to shift from congregate dining to
home deliveries.”
In addition to the hundreds of new
clients requiring home deliveries, the orga-
A collective effort
for the students
Despite the circumstances, Jason
Weese, the assistant principal at
Westland High School, and Melvina
Torbert, the coordinator of state and federal
programs with the South-Western
City Schools District, manage a wave and
a smile at a food distribution site on
March 27. The prepackaged dinners and
weekend food bags were a part of a collective
effort between the Mid-Ohio
Foodbank, the Grove City Church of the
Nazarene, Jordan’s Crossing and a number
of business to offer meals to students
during school closures due to the
COVID-19 outbreak. Torbert said the dinner
meal distribution at Westland High
School will likely continue each week on
Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays but
advises parents to check the district’s
website for verification and changes.
Brooklyn Brown (left) and Amy Gordon
prepare to distribute milk and other
beverages. Both volunteers are with
Communities in Schools; Gordon
serves as its executive director. It is
estimated that more than 400 free
meals were distributed on March 25, 26
and 27.
For communities to get through the
COVID-19 pandemic, people are going to
have to stick together and that is what
business owners are doing in the Grove
City Town Center.
Project Altogether consists of small
business owners, Visit Grove City, the
Grove City Area Chamber of Commerce
and the Heart of Grove City. It started out
“We are fortunate to be able to still
To meet the growing demand, Gehring
said the organization needs volunteers for
three of its programs. Those programs
include Groceries-on-the-Go where volunteers
pack meals at their pantry for cancer
According to Gehring, more than 5,000
meals are delivered daily across five counties
through its Meals-on-Wheels program.
“It is considered to be one of the largest
home meal distribution programs in the
country,” he said.
Due to the increase of community members
wanting to remain active or get out of
the house during stay-at-home orders,
Gehring said the organization has been
incorporating daily training sessions at its
central location at 670 Harmon Ave. in
Columbus.
“Sometimes after their training session,
they can get right out and get started on a
route,” Gehring said.
He said that there are meal distribution
sites at locations throughout the counties
they serve. For instance, if a volunteer
lives in Groveport, they do not have to
come to Columbus to collect meals as there
is a central location
“We try to make it as easy and accessible
as possible for our volunteers.”
As a precaution, Gehring said temporary
changes have been made on route
deliveries in order to protect their clients
and their volunteers.
“We are no longer requiring the client’s
signature when our volunteers leave their
meals by the door,” he said. “We ask that,
at this time, the volunteer step away or go
back to their car and wait for visual confirmation
of the meal pickup. Or they could
call and seek verification that way.”
There are, however, some exceptions.
“We do have some clients who cannot
come to the door so the volunteer will have
to go in the house to deliver the meals.”
The organization has asked that volunteers
take their temperatures before leaving
for their route and to not deliver meals
should they feel under the weather.
“We want everyone to be safe,” Gehring
said.
The organization has also requested
that families delivering meals leave their
children in the cars or keep them away
from the clients’ home.
“There are many families out there who
love to do this as a group,” said Gehring.
“We still encourage that but we ask that
social distancing be maintained at this
time.”
He said that despite the new guidelines,
he knows the community will come out to
support the LifeCare Alliance programs.
One such couple who intends to do just
that is Karen and Phil Rohr. The Grove
City couple have been volunteering with
Meals-on-Wheels for approximately 20
as a brewing project to promote the visitor’s bureau
but has now become an effort to assist small business
owners through the coronavirus outbreak.
According to Trevor Luther, head brewer at the
Grove City Brewing Company, this project originally
started as Altogether Adventure Ale. It was a collaboration
to sell a special brew to promote the city and its
small businesses.
“With all that has come with these unknown, difficult
times, Grove City Brewing Company felt the beer
that was brewed in the spirit of a community coming
all together, that it should be used to help preserve
that community,” said Luther. “Hence the idea to create
a fundraiser to help preserve our beautiful downtown
area by giving financial support to our neighbors
in the small business community.”
The Altogether Adventure Ale was released for sale
on March 28 and is available at Grove City Brewing
Company, 3946 Broadway and Hop Yard 62, 4057
Broadway. The special beer will be sold until the bottles
run out and part of the proceeds will help fellow
business owners.
According to Andy Furr, the executive director of
the Heart of Grove City (an organization that promotes
the Grove City Town Center), businesses across the
board have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Everything is closed except for the restaurants
that offer carryout and delivery,” said Furr. “Some
www.columbusmessenger.com
years and said they have no intention to
stop.
“We enjoy volunteering for this organization,”
said Karen Rohr. “It gives us so
much pleasure to be of assistance.”
She said they love the interaction they
have with the clients (however brief as they
have hot meals to deliver) and the comfort
they feel knowing that they have played a
small part in putting food in the stomachs
of those who need it.
“Some of these wonderful people would
probably never get a meal without this
organization,” she said. “Knowing that we
did something to get them that hot meal
makes us feel like we have done something
worthwhile.”
Rohr said she knows that it is recommended
that older adults limit contact with
others, but said that she and her husband
have no plans to step away from delivering
meals.
“We really didn’t have too much of a discussion
about it,” she said. “We felt that if
we followed the organization’s new guidelines,
it would be fine to continue to deliver
meals.”
She said she would recommend becoming
a Meals-on-Wheels volunteer to anyone
able to, global pandemic or not.
“It is just a great way to give back to
your community,” she said.
To learn more about volunteering for
any of the programs, Gehring said to call
their hotline at 614-444-6325 or visit
www.lifecarealliance.org. Background
checks are required to become a Meals-on-
Wheels volunteer.
businesses will be able to weather the storm. Others
will be devastated. We expect to see permanent closures.”
Furr said one of the main goals of the Heart of
Grove City is to support and promote local businesses
so he was excited to be part of Project Altogether.
“It was a perfect fit,” said Furr. “It gives us the ability
to continue to focus on the folks in our service area.”
The project will help to raise funds and the Heart of
Grove City will accept applications from Town Center
businesses that need financial assistance. Furr said
the funds could be used to help small business owners
pay for rent, utilities, payroll and even stock for the
store once businesses are able to open again.
“It covers a wide spectrum,” said Furr.
According to Furr, businesses eligible for the funding
assistance are in the Heart of Grove City service
area. However, he said, if they can raise enough funds,
they could expand the service area to benefit other
small businesses in the Grove City area.
Once an application is received, a committee will
review the information. Furr said the organization is
working to develop an application page.
Since many families are confined to
their homes due to the coronavirus, the
Southwest Franklin County Historical
Society is reaching out to the youth in the
community to write about their experiences.
All entries will be included in a random
drawing and three entries will be drawn to
receive $50 each.
“We’re looking for written experiences
about how everyday life has changed,” said
Steve Jackson, president of the historical
society. “Children and youth are encouraged
to sit down at their computer or with
pen-in-hand and describe this new way of
life.”
“It’s important to record for future generations
what it is like to face a potential
health threat, the inability to experience
actual face time with friends, loss of sporting
activities and challenges of learning
online,” said Jim Hale, a member of the
Grove City Call Center
The city of Grove City opened a call center
in response to helping residents and
business owners with coronavirus (COVID-
19) questions and concerns.
The call center is available from 7 a.m.
to 9 p.m. seven days a week. Members of
the public can call the line at 614-277-3560
society. “Those are just a few topics. Be creative.
The society encourages seniors to submit
their experiences.
“We would like to know what high
school seniors are thinking about graduation,
the senior prom and other missed
high school activities,” said Hale.
Parents are encouraged to help the
younger crowd put their thoughts and concerns
in writing. This is a historic time; one
that will be remembered for years to come
and we need to record how the young people
of 2020 will be remembered, Hale said.
“Younger children can participate with
their parent’s help,” Jackson said. “There
are no age restrictions and we will be
accepting comments from the youngest
child to college age students who live in the
with questions or concerns. Call center
workers are ready to provide resources or
put residents in touch with the help they
may need. The services and resources will
be modified as the needs change.
So many possibilities with a community park in the Town Center
I was reading the Southwest Messenger
article (March 8 edition) entitled, “GC
Streetscape Program Grows.” The essence
of it was that the city was going to expand
the street program that annually places
some 100 of those beautiful hanging flower
planters we see along the Town Center
area. The plan, to cost $95,000 annually,
will add 400 new planters (along with banners)
to include areas along Stringtown
Road, 665, and further up and down along
Broadway. It was quoted, “this helps to
keep a positive community identity.”
My first reaction was thinking those are
some mighty expensive flowers. Then I concluded,
anything to improve the mood for
drivers as they pass along the Stringtown
Road traffic mess or enhances the community
image in some of the sections north or
south of Town Center on Broadway can’t
hurt. The article turned my thoughts to a
different, but related, issue one that could
also provide a ‘positive community identity.’
There’s been an incredible amount of
focus directed to the future of the Beulah
Park area. It’s been presented as an opportunity
we might never see again, so let’s do
it right. Development is now well under
way. Hopes are high the vision will come
together and blend with a revitalization of
the Town Center into an overall positive
future of our rapidly-growing Grove City.
Many residents feel there’s a similar potential
opportunity waiting in the wings.
Local resident Gregg Smurthwaite presented
a petition with 600 supporting signatures
to city council as 2019 wound
down. It called for a community park to be
built on the razed and now vacant old
library site. Council adopted the recommendation
designating it to be a public
gathering place and set plans in motion for
the necessary scoping, feasibility and community
input phases. While it’s been overshadowed
by the massive Beulah Park project,
it’s still very much alive and we’ll be
hearing more about it in the coming weeks.
An outside firm has been preparing various
options for consideration and should be
providing feedback soon.
I’m excited thinking about the farreaching
potential there. I know there are
those who want projects to be revenue generating
or self-sustaining, to generate
taxes to support more growth. I’m thinking
this might be a time to step back and take
a break from our relentless growth and
seize this opportunity. If done right, it
could support more quality growth downstream.
You must spend money to make
money. I see this as an investment into the
future with our payback the opportunity to
establish a unique signature statement for
Grove City and Town Center, one that can
provide many tangible and intangible positive
results to support the future while also
preserving and enhancing our cherished
small town allure and past.
My vision is ambitious, yet realistic. I
see a serene, green oasis on that cleared
library lot, a place that draws people to the
Town Center and gives them a reason to
want to stay for more than a passing-bymoment
as they amble just a few steps over
to the Town Center and back. Yes, the
Beulah Park project incorporates a new
green space and park, but it’s too far away
for many, despite the connector path they
plan. This could become an integral part of
Town Center proper…forever.
I’m hoping the final scope will also
include that rarely used field on the east
side of Arbutus Avenue. Let it finally use
its potential as an asset instead of being
left idle. Then, close that small north-south
section of Arbutus and convert it to a
pedestrian promenade. My college did that.
They made a busy University Place vehicle-free,
converting it to pedestrian use.
The chancellor noted, “The strategy was
simple. If you sustain and honor a beautiful
heritage, while embracing innovation,
the result can be triumphant. That walkway
is not simply a celebration of the
future, it offers a new interaction in the
heart of the campus near the iconic landmarks
that help to identify this
University.” The project was part of a campus
framework input effort, much as Grove
City periodically solicits resident input and
charts its course for the future.
You’d now have the old library site,
encompassing Park Street on the north,
Civic Place on the south, First Street to the
west, and across the converted Arbutus
Avenue walkway to include that field to the
east. Now you’ve got an area to make a
statement with.
I’d develop and then manage that statement
working with a diverse collaboration
of the great talent this community has
proven it has. At the least, the committee
would include some open minded personnel
from city government, parks and recreation,
Town Center and resident volunteers.
So, what would the statement be? I have
my ideas, but I’d defer to the vision of the
committee. I envision the promenade, with
nice seat benches, lined with those pretty
flower planters and lights. On one side of
the promenade some serene walking paths
with pretty landscaping, bushes, flowers,
dwarf trees, maybe a decorative fountain.
The other side of the promenade could be
used for events. I’m sure a proactive and
creative committee could easily come up
with many new activities that might draw
Guest Column
Dave Burton
visitors, who would then frequent the Town
Center too.
I’d like to see the George Edge Music
Park, along with most of its traditional
activities, moved over there. I always enjoy
the Summer Sizzle Concert Series, especially
the opening Memorial Day, ‘Salute to
Americas Finest’ with our own Grove City
Community Winds performing. But its current
location doesn’t do that or other events
justice. It’s too cramped, noise from passing
vehicles, often hot with no shade, and truck
fumes that can be overpowering.
I can picture an opening of the park, a
fun formal dedication event with media
coverage on the nighttime news, a statement
and picture to include at the front of
our public relations brochures to support
our quality growth, etc.
Thoughts go back to my summer session
forestry classes, far up in the Adirondacks,
in 1970. For the resources management
class, the camp bus took us out into the forest
and dropped each of us off at his/her
own unique assigned setting of undeveloped
forested acres. We were then tasked
with writing a term paper describing what
we’d do with the few acres we were
assigned. My setting didn’t present many
options, make that none. If only I had the
potential of those fields by the old library! I
recall that famous movie, “Field of
Dreams.” They insisted it couldn’t be done.
But a few persevered. “Build it and they
will come.” It was and they did.
Some family members of Gerald Seymour wanted him to know they were thinking of
him. He is at the Monterey Rehabilitation Center in Grove City and cannot have visitors
during the COVID-19 outbreak. Above, family members (from left to right) Cortney,
Justin, Charlie, Emmy, Terri and Tom Seymour stop outside his window to send a message
of love.
By Andrea Cordle
Southwest Editor
A message of love
Prairie Township resident Gerald
Seymour, 87, has been living at the
Monterey Rehabilitation Center in Grove
City since August 2019. Since the coronavirus
outbreak, his family has not been
able to visit him.
“It’s hard for us not to go see him,” said
Tom Seymour, Gerald’s son.
So, the family decided to make the best
of a challenging situation. They made large
cards and stood outside the care center’s
window with a message of love for Gerald.
Tom said the family had been sending
Gerald care packages with some of his
favorite foods like peanut butter and milkshakes,
but they wanted to do more.
“We wanted to show him the family was
all still together,” said Tom. “He (Gerald)
was quite surprised and very happy. It lifted
our spirits as much as his.”
According to Tom, it was about two
years ago that his father was taken to the
hospital with flu-like symptoms. He was
treated and released. Just a few days later,
Gerald was back in the hospital, where he
was diagnosed with Guillain Barre syndrome,
a neurological disorder in which the
body’s immune system attacks the nervous
system.
“He was completely incapacitated,” said
Tom.
After his stay in the hospital, Gerald
and his wife, Emma, moved to StoryPoint
in Grove City. However, Tom said, Gerald
needed more care, so he was eventually
moved to the Monterey Rehabilitation
Center, where he was been receiving “fantastic
care.”
When Tom first started hearing reports
about the COVID-19 virus, he said he was
Gerald Seymour looks out the window at
Monterey Care Center to see his family
with a special message.
concerned about his father.
“His immune system is shot,” said Tom.
“He’s very susceptible to illness.”
Tom was happy to hear the care center
decided to institute a ‘no visitor’ policy during
the COVID-19 outbreak, though he
knew it would be tough on his father and
his family.
For those who have a loved one in a care
center or facility where visitation has been
eliminated or decreased, Tom said it is
important to remember the little things,
like a simple letter or a quick phone call.
“It’s amazing how the little things can
boost how they feel,” said Tom. “They know
they haven’t been forgotten.”

An up close look at the herd
The bison herd at Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park was grazing close to one of the
walking trails, giving park visitors in late March a great view. Ohio Governor Mike
DeWine and Ohio Department of Health Director Amy Acton, M.D., MPH, announced
a “Stay at Home” order, but individuals are still permitted to go to public parks and
open outdoor recreation areas, providing they comply with social distancing
requirements.
Iris is a beautiful 7-
year-old calico. She
would love to find her
forever home where
she can curl up and
just hang out. Iris has
been spayed,
microchipped and is
up-to-date on vaccines.
She is available
for adoption
through Colony Cats.
Lucky is a 3-year-old
who enjoys human
companionship but
does avoid rambunctious
young children.
She really likes to
have her forehead
scratches. Lucky is
hoping her name is
accurate as she
wants a person or
family to call her own.
Louie is a 2-year-old
beagle. He likes to
bury his toys in the
yard. He walks well
on a leash and is
crate trained. Louie
was found in a rural
area and most likely
lived outdoors. He is
learning to live inside
and enjoys snuggling
on a warm, comfy couch or bed. He is good
with dogs and cats and is available for adoption
through Colony Cats and Dogs.
Bingo is a 1-year-old
pit bull mix. He is very
high energy and
needs a home without
children and
where he can be
trained with positive
reinforcement. Bingo
will need a patient
owner that is willing to
work with him to
improve his behavior
and become the best dog he can be. Meet
Bingo through an appointment at the Franklin
PAGE 12 - SOUTHWEST MESSENGER - April 5, 2020
“Self Made” is well-acted but kind of a mess
With theaters closed for the time being,
a handful of distribution studios have
decided to release their upcoming attractions
on Video on Demand, which in the
past has been the place where movies go to
escape widespread public shame.
A question of pricing has been debated
with some studios allowing 48-hour rentals
for $6.99 while others are dropping theirs
for $20. While families may have paid the
latter amount for tickets and food before,
it’s a little much to ask an individual to
fork over that kind of dough, especially in
this economy. And, if I’m being real honest,
most movies are not worth the $5 admission
to the matinee but I digress.
While I will continue to peruse those
offerings, I will largely be searching other
streaming platforms for potentially entertaining
movies, limited television series
and television shows.
The show that seems to have everyone
abuzz is Netflix’s “Tiger King,” which I had
initially planned to review. Upon watching
the first episode of the seven-part
docuseries, however, I realized my tolerance
for stupidity is immensely low right
now so I had to pass on it.
As I was browsing the other new releases,
I saw Octavia Spencer’s face pop up on
the screen for “Self Made: Inspired by the
Life of Madam C.J. Walker” and decided to
check it out. With the exception of “Ma,” it
is always a delight to watch her performances
so I thought this might follow in
that same mold.
For the most part, this four-episode
series does that just, allowing her to showcase
that intensive range of emotion as she
brings a pioneer of the black beauty industry
to life on the screen. The overall series,
however, is a bit of a mess in its presentation
with its use of a modern soundtrack
and filming tricks set against its depiction
of early 1900s life. While I understand the
viewpoint of the writers and directors, it
made for an occasionally jarring viewing
experience.
It begins in 1908 St. Louis where a
beleaguered Sarah Breedlove is working as
a laundress to the affluent. With her husband
deceased and her daughter Lelia
(Tiffany Haddish) in school, she has no
time for the finer things in life, especially
concern for her appearance.
After a particularly hard day, she meets
Addie Munroe (Carmen Ejogo), a businesswoman
in the beauty industry who wants
to employ Sarah’s services. Upon taking
one look at the downtrodden Sarah, Addie
takes her under her wing and tries to get
her to rediscover a zest for life.
Through work and companionship, the
two bond over life’s ills and celebrate as
Sarah finds comfort in her appearance
through hair growth attributed to Addie’s
products. Inspired by her friend, Sarah
pitches the idea of becoming a spokeswoman
to the masses but is quickly
rebuffed.
Believing that Addie does not want her
to become a business partner due to her
physical looks, the two bitterly part ways.
Afterward, Sarah becomes determined to
make a better hair product for all black
women and market it to all women, not just
those deemed physically acceptable by society’s
ridiculous standards.
The subsequent episodes follow Sarah
as she gains a cult following for her hair
products, marries advertising rep Charles
James Walker (Blair Underwood), moves to
Indiana and opens a factory and works to
become the next Rockefeller. While those
latter dreams to come to fruition to an
extent, it comes at great personal cost.
Upon reading up on C.J. Walker after
the show, the writers and directors were
wise to use the wording ‘Inspired by the
Life of’ as it seems to take several liberties
with her story. The most outlandish comes
at the expense of Annie Turnbo Malone,
the real-life woman on which Addie
Munroe in based. In the series, the running
conflict between the two self-made millionaires
has more to do with appearance while
most historians believe it had more to do
with claims of formula theft. That in of
itself could propel a series as it is ripe with
drama, but instead
this adaptation
turns Addie into a
one-note villain hellbent
on the destruction
of Walker’s burgeoning
manufacturing
company.
While the theatrics and ensuing conflict
between the two women were mildly amusing
to watch, it ultimately proved to be a
distraction into what was otherwise a
decent general public introduction of an
inspiring woman who used her fortune to
uplift the arts community, historical black
colleges and other civil rights causes and
organizations.
So if you’re looking to know more about
this great trailblazer, maybe stick to the
written word, such as the biography written
by her great-great-granddaughter
A’Lelia Bundles. But if you’re looking for a
well-acted but odd mixture of flash and
embellished strife, it’s a good way to pass
the time. Grade: C-
