The belief also is that the preventive and healingproperties of this powerful Rasayana are so important,that it found a place in daily food preparation and intake.The beautiful yellow turmeric is in fact, inseparablylinked to many aspects of Indian culture. It has popularcosmetic uses, especially for the skin. It is consideredauspicious in all ceremonies and symbolises strengthand purity. In fact, in many Hindu ceremonies the sacredthread tied around the wrist is turmeric-dyed yellowcotton thread. All traditional medical practices inIndia including Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani as well as theTibetan Swa-rig–pa healing tradition, suggest wide rangingmedical uses for turmeric; from a simple remedyfor cuts and wounds, to an antidote for snake venom,management of complicated metabolic syndromes likediabetes etc. Understandably it is called “The GoldenSpice”! Its eminent culinary, cultural, religious andspiritual significance is also prevalent in Buddhism andthroughout South East Asia. It is today, one of the mostextensively researched herbs world-wide.Fresh and dry rhizomes of TurmericTurmeric powder in a spice boxaTo make turmeric powder, the rhizomesare boiled for about 30–45 minutes andthen dried in hot ovens. Only then are therhizomes pulverised to get the deep yellowpowder that is so well known and loved57
