CREATING ZIGZAG FOLDSJust above where the fabric meets the floor on this mysterious figure, zigzag folds haveformed. If the cloth were free to hang it would form pipe folds, but since it begins to bunchup, zigzag folds are formed instead. The stiffness of the fabric plays a role in how highup the zigzag folds begin to form; the stiffer the fabric, the higher up the folds begin.
BILLOWING FOLDThe billowing fold (or flying fold) is created when wind is thedominant force acting on cloth, such as on a flag. Becausethe folds are dynamically swelling and gathering, the patternsare constantly changing, but the undulating surface formslarge waves that travel across the length of the fabric. Inaddition, the cloth is usually anchored at various points thatpull against the wind, where you can see loose pipe foldstrying to form horizontally while interlocking folds may beginto form at the unsupported end.BASIC BILLOWING FOLDSBillowing folds are very dynamic; notice the overall undulatingwave pattern consistent in the photos below. When analyzing abillowing fold, first look for the overall rising and falling of the cloth,then overlay any smaller folds that ride along the larger waves.PLACES TO FIND BILLOWING FOLDSThough not as dramatic as a flag, when a woman’s dress catchesthe wind, a billowing fold will appear. Any panel of fabric thatcatches the wind will create billowing folds: The unzipped jacket ofa motorcycle rider, a cape on a superhero and the jumpsuit of aparachutist are a few examples.
