EXERCISE
GESTURE TO EXPRESSION
When drawing expressions, use the same process: Start with the gesture,
build the three-dimensional form, refine the shapes to reflect your specific
subject, and, finally, add details. Don’t skip the critical gesture drawing
or you risk missing the emotion behind the expression.
1| Gesture
Always start with a gesture, capturing both the basic position
of the body and the expression in simplified form.
2| Basic Volumes
Go back over the gesture and establish
the basic three-dimensional qualities
of the figure.
3| Anatomical Forms
Shape the basic volumes into more specific
forms that more accurately describe
your particular subject.
