accessibility of the region would be improved enormously. One important threat is the
general trend to public cost-cutting. A loss of public services (hospitals, educational sector,
and social security) and regional subsidies would have enormous impact on the as yet fragile
development.
2.3.10. Tourism
The general trend to more individual forms of tourism, especially adventure and ecotourism,
is a very promising chance for the region´s development. In contrast to this the high touristic
competition with other relatively close top destinations and the overall disadvantageous
regional image has to be pointed out. Touristic valorization of post mining potentials seems
to be difficult, as mining and industry in general can be seen as a touristic low involvement
product. As supplement for an integrated destination mix mining and industrial heritage could
play a part.
2.3.11. Other
Southern and Eastern Styria set an example for successful regional development without
massive financial means and external support. In both cases the factor of success lies in
positioning of high quality regional products and authentic non-mass ecotourism as well as
on a diverse economic structure. This has already formed an international image with a
sustaining flow of visitors and customers. For the Steirische Eisenstraße these examples
provide a benchmark for an overall image improvement. Nevertheless the region could
develop a cultural identity in the last years (integrated cultural management, exhibitions in
Leoben, festivals etc.).
