2.3 Field Knowledge
A Cruiser in Training must be able to demonstrate the following:
a) all Level 1 requirements;
b) identify and record commercial tree genus/species found within the work
area;
c) identify and record common pathology for trees, with distinctions made
between biotic and abiotic sources of decay;
d) identify and record tree classes with knowledge of the associated risk
group classifications and their effects on percent decay calculations;
e) identify and record common tree pests and other damage agents;
f) recognize in the field common map and ortho-photo related features
including forest cover attributes (species, age classes, etc.);
g) recognize legal survey features;
h) where applicable, be aware of GPS functions, limitations and their
appropriate use;
i) where applicable, be competent with Call Grade and Net Factoring
standards; and
j) be aware of the appropriate regulatory and job safety requirements (e.g.
Worksafe BC).
2.4 Office Procedures
A Cruiser in Training must be able to demonstrate the following:
a) all Level 1 requirements;
b) assist with preparing a cruise plan map;
c) pre-stratification of timber types;
d) how to use the CV% (co-efficient of variation) of an area to determine the
sampling intensity for a given sampling error objective;
e) produce an adjusted cruise map including accurate placement of the cruise
strip locations, tie-points and if applicable, confirm timber types;
f) edit field data and prepare it for input to a cruise compilation program;
