Sign-off Procedure At each competence level, an applicant must be signed-off (endorsed) by a qualified sponsor. This sign-off process is the basis for assessing competency. The process relies on complete and accurate information from the applicant and the integrity and participation of the endorsing sponsor(s) and references. A cruiser must consistently demonstrate his/her competence and ability to achieve all aspects of the activities described within the log. Endorsing Sponsor An endorsing sponsor is responsible for ensuring that the applicant has satisfactorily demonstrated all aspects of the required competencies and abilities prior to the signoff of each level. The endorsing sponsor must either be an ATC, ATE, RFT or RPF for Levels 1, 2 and 3 and either an ATE, RFT or RPF for Level 4. To endorse each level an ATC, ATE, RFT or RPF must provide a signature and member number for each section within the level. References The applicant must include three Confidential Work Experience Reports (one must be from your current supervisor) obtained from persons who are in a position to provide a personal assessment of the applicant’s competencies, technical abilities, work standards and general professional character. To act as a reference, these individuals must be members of the ABCFP and have direct knowledge of the applicant’s work experience in the capacity of a supervisor or colleague. Work Experience It is important that the applicant completes the minimum requirements for field and office experience as applicable. The minimum requirements must be demonstrated and documented at each level to ensure his/her understanding of the principles and attainment of the appropriate skills. The minimum experience requirements for signoff are as follows. • For each three month segment of field experience required, a minimum of 45 days of related cruising activities must be obtained. • For each 12 month segment of field and office experience required, a minimum of 120 days of field-related cruising activities and 60 days of officerelated cruising activities must be obtained. • A Level 1 Compasser must have a minimum of three months of Level 1 appropriate field experience. • A Level 2 Cruiser in Training must have a minimum of three months at Level 1 and six months of related cruising experience after reaching Level 1, of which three of those months must be at Level 2 (in training). This is a total of nine months combined field and office experience. • An ATC must have a minimum of three months at Level 1, six months at Level 2 and 15 months of related cruising experience after reaching Level 2, of which six of those months must be at Level 3 (in training). This is a total of 24 months combined field and office experience which must be completed within a 48 month period. • An ATE must have a minimum of three months at Level 1, six months at Level 2, 15 months at Level 3 and 36 months of related cruising experience after reaching Level 3, of which 15 of those months must be at Level 4 (in training). This is a total of 60 months combined field and office experience which must be completed within a 120 month period. Accreditation Guide The experience and knowledge requirements are provided below to clarify the respective accreditation forms. Please read through this guide to ensure you have full knowledge of the requirements for accreditation. The topics included within each category are an outline of the competencies required to meet each accreditation level. The signing forest professional is accountable to ensure the applicant has met these standards. Level 1 - Compasser Function A Compasser is an entry-level position suitable for forestry workers interested in pursuing a career in timber cruising and related work. Experience Requirements Completion of Level 1 requires three months of cumulative appropriate field experience.
