1.0 Endorsement Criteria<br />

A Compasser must meet the following requirements to be signed-<strong>of</strong>f by an ATC,<br />

ATE, RFT or RPF at Level 1:<br />

a) Have the ability to function as a Compasser with minimal supervision;<br />

b) Complete all competencies at Level 1 as described in this document; and<br />

c) Complete three months appropriate field experience at Level 1.<br />

1.1 Equipment Knowledge<br />

A Compasser must be able to demonstrate his or her ability to safely operate and<br />

maintain:<br />

a) a hand compass;<br />

b) a diameter tape;<br />

c) an increment borer;<br />

d) an axe; and<br />

e) a horizontal and vertical distance measuring device.<br />

1.2 Field Procedures<br />

A Compasser must be able to demonstrate the following:<br />

a) adjust declination settings, set directional bearings on a hand compass and<br />

navigate with minimum supervision;<br />

b) establish a plot centre and reference points;<br />

c) determine the diameter <strong>of</strong> a tree at breast height (Dbh);<br />

d) determine the breast height age and measure growth increments <strong>of</strong> a tree;<br />

e) assist the cruiser in the measurement <strong>of</strong> tree heights;<br />

f) communicate field information clearly; and<br />

g) conduct all tasks in a safe and appropriate manner.<br />

1.3 Field Knowledge<br />

A Compasser must be able to demonstrate the following:<br />

a) differentiate between magnetic, grid and true north and set a navigational<br />

course and bearing from a map;<br />
