Ascension Day
he, ye have heard of me. For John truly baptized with
water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not
many days hence. When they therefore were come together,
they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this
time restore again the kingdom to Israel? And he said unto
them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons,
which the Father hath put in his own power. But ye shall
receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon
you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem,
and in all Judrea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost
part of the earth. And when he had spoken these things,
while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received
him out of their sight. And while they looked stedfastly
toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by
them in white apparel; which also said, Ye men of Galilee,
why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus,
which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in
like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.
The Gospel. St. Luke xxiv. 49.
JESUS said, Behold, I send the promise of my Father
upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye
be endued with power from on high. And he led them out
as far as to Bethany, and he lifted up his hands, and blessed
them. And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was
parted from them, and carried up into heaven. And they
worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy:
and were continually in the temple, praising and blessing
God.
The same Collect, Epistle, and Gospel shall serve for every day after,
unto the next Sunday, except upon the Feast of Sr. Philip and Sr.
The Collect.
GOD, the King of glory, who hast exalted thine only
O Son Jesus Christ with great triumph unto thy kingdom
in heaven; We beseech thee, leave us not comfortless;
but send to us thine Holy Ghost to comfort us, and
exalt us unto the same place whither our Saviour Christ
is gone before, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the
same Holy Ghost, one God, world WitllOut end. Amen.
'J?he Epistle. 1 St. Peter iv. 7.
THE end orall tllingS is at hand: be ye therefore sober,
and watch unto prayer. And above all things have fervent
charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the
multitude of sins. Use hospitality one to another without
grudging. As every man hatb received the gift, even so
minister tbe same one to another, as good stewards of the
manifold grace of God. If any man speak, let bim speak as
the oracles of God; if any man minister, let binl do it as of
tbe ability which God giveth: that God in all things may
be glorified through Jesus Christ, to wbom be praise and
dominiolI for ever and ever. Amen.
The Gospel. St. Jobn xv. 26, and part of Chap. xvi.
WHEN the Comforter is come, wbom I will send
unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of trutll,
which proceedeth from tile Father, he shall testify of me:
and ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with
me from the beginning. These tllingS have I spoken unto
you, that ye should not be offended. They shall put you
out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometb, that whosoever
killeth you will think that he doetb God service. And
these things will they do unto you, because they have not
