The 9th Sunday after Trinity
The Epistle. Romans viii. 12.
BRETHREN, we are debtors, "'ot to the flesh, to live
. after. the flesh. For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall
dIe: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of
the body, ye shall live. For as many as are led by the Spirit
of .they are the sons of God. For ye have not received
the Splflt of bondage again to fear; but ye have received
of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The
Splflt beareth witness with our spirit, that we are
the children of God: and if children, then heirs; heirs of
God, and joint-heirs with Christ· if so be that we suffer
with him, that we may be also gl;rified together.
The Gospel. St. Matthew vii. 15.
BEW of prophets, which come to you in sheep's
clotlung, but rnwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye
shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of
thorns, or figs ?f thIstles? Even so eve!}' good tree bringeth
forth good frwt; but a corrupt tree brrngetll forth evil fruit.
A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a
corrupt tree bring good fruit. Every tree that bringeth
not forth good frwt IS hewn down, and cast into the fire.
Wherefore tlleir fruits ye shall know them. Not every
one tllat sanh unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the
kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my
Father which is in heaven. .
Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Epistle. I Corintllians x. I.
BRETHREN, I would not that ye should be ignorant,
how that all our fatllers were under tlle cloud, and all
passed tlrrough tlle sea; and were all baptized unto Moses
in the cloud and in the sea; and did all eat the same spiritual
meat; and did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they
drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that
Rock was Christ. But with many of them God was not well
pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness. Now
these things were our examples, to the intent we should
not lust after evil things, as they also lusted. Neither be
ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The
people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.
Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed,
and fell in one day three and twenty thousand.
Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted,
and were destroyed of serpents. Neither murmur ye, as
some of them also murmurejYand were destroyed of the
destroyer. Now all these tlungs happened unto them for
ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon
whom the ends of the world are come. Wherefore let him
that tllinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall. There hath
I}o temptation taken you but such as is common to man:
but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted
above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also
make a way to escape, tllat ye may be able to bear it.
The Gospel. St. Luke xv. II.
JESUS said, A certain man had two sons: and the younger
of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion
of goods that falleth to me. And he divided unto them his
