THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOME….
ON THE CAPE & ISLANDS
This past spring, there has been one thing everyone in the world has had to learn
to do…self-quarantine! So, that being said, how lucky are those who live on the
Cape and Islands? Imagine sheltering in place in one of the best vacation spots in
the country. It is truly a special place most of us feel fortunate just to visit, never
mind escape to.
There’s just that feeling that comes with crossing the bridge or taking a ferry or
a plane; your spirit lifts, and stresses seem to wash away a bit. So, for those of
you who are blessed to have a home on the Cape and Islands, consider yourself
lucky. While we all try to keep sane on the other side of the bridge, you have
the advantage of a great permanent mindset that the beauty of the Cape and
Islands brings.
There has been a trend over the past year of homeowners making the Cape
their permanent residence, and it makes good sense. In fact, my new associate
publisher, Lisa Almquist, who heads up this publication, decided years ago to
make Falmouth home, embracing a coastal lifestyle and limiting trips over the
bridge. I am thrilled to have her at the helm of this fabulous publication, as she can
personally be there to help Cape businesses market their services. Lisa is excited
to be hosting open houses at showrooms, design seminars for homeowners and
events where everyone can share in the industry’s passion for the home.
In this issue, we showcase homes that have become family compounds and
residences that provide year-round living solutions, such as home offices, gyms
and even indoor pools, as well as sensational seasonal retreats that are a sight for
sore eyes. All of them prove that there is no better place to hunker down than on
the Cape and Islands. Certain things are just better on the Cape, Martha’s Vineyard
and Nantucket, and, of course, we showcase that too.
We hope this resource inspires you to build your refuge in a way that provides
year-round comfort and fun. Whether that means outdoor living for three seasons
or putting in a bocce court, putting green, outdoor kitchen or a pool, the sky’s the
limit when it comes to entertaining your family in your own backyard.
Be well!
This quintessential
Nantucket home,
in the heart of the
Historic District,
was crafted with joy.
A Summer Affair
Inside a historic, feel-good Nantucket home and
the jubilant interior design of Donna Elle
It is good to have lifelong friends. And even better when one of your closest
has not only your best interests at heart, but an ear to the ground. That’s
how a family from Ohio, who had vacationed in Nantucket every summer
since 2002, came to live their longtime dream of owning a home there.
When Robert Deuberry, a builder with his own Nantucket home, caught
wind that an 1800s sea captain’s house in the historic district could be theirs,
they swiftly put down roots on the island, their “ultimate happy place.”
capecoddesignguide.com

Left: Traditional aspects of the
home, like the banister, balusters,
paneling and newel post of the
staircase, are rendered in fresh
and atypical ways. The original
floorboards were finished by
Chris Yates of East Wood Trading
Company in a custom shade
of “Nutmeg.” Right: The dining
room is a celebration of saturated
color—from the painting by
Cynthia Packard, to the beachgrass
green grass cloth, to
the Serena & Lily bistro chairs
surrounding the dining table (an
estate sale find). Williams sourced
a blue damask rug with an open,
coastal pattern to ground the
finer prints of the space, and Elle
topped it all off with a chandelier
of oyster shells.
Finding the ideal interior designer to renovate and appoint
their newfound, four-story treasure was a result of their
own initiative. The homeowners found the inspired coastal
designs of Donna Elle Design on a Pinterest search, and
soon struck up another mutually rewarding and meaningful
relationship with local designer Donna Elle.
Elle and her daughter and associate Katie Williams, who
joined the firm in 2015 with a resume to match her impressive
pedigree, were instantly enchanted by the homeowner
and her style. The wife and mother of four has an innate
effervescence, they explain, and a “joyful personality that
is overwhelmingly optimistic,” adds Williams.
They found her design vision to be just as exuberant. She
prefers fun over fussy, adores color and hoped to distill
and express the vitality of her large, active family, which
is constantly moving in different directions. Elle, with a
sixth-sense ability to connect with the vibe of her clients,
immediately interpreted the look she was after.
Within days of signing on, Elle studied the architectural
plans developed by Peninsula Architects of Ohio. She
became “enamored with the opportunity to address the
traditional formulaic of wall paneling and trim detail to truly
emphasize the client’s aura through design,” she recalls,
creating “a wholly personalized, tailor-made interior.”
capecoddesignguide.com 49

The backsplash, from
Artistic Tile, was chosen
because it sparkled like
the homeowner. Counters
are Imperial Danby marble,
Elle’s go-to surface for its
soft blues and browns that
speak to the sea and sand
of Nantucket. Ricciardi
Marble & Granite finished
the marble, and Boston
Stone Restoration applied
an epoxy “that makes it
foolproof.” The island and
breakfast nook showcase
Elle’s unabashed love of
blue—navy so deep you
can dive in, cornflower
and sky—while the
Roman shades show Elle’s
winning way with window
treatments.
50
capecoddesignguide.com

Throughout the home, the wainscoting, molding and
window trim are historically detailed and a nod to the
past, but the colors are refreshingly here and now.
Elle scoured a library of textiles from her go-to vendors—such as Schumacher,
Cowtan & Tout, Quadrille, Studio 534 and Merida Rugs—back in her studio, and
created room schematics and color schemes with fervor that spoke to the heart
of her adroit design execution. The clients offered their enthusiastic approval and
complete trust, and the nine-month project, which had already taken on an energy
of its own, had begun.
The renovation went deeper than the surface selections. Initially, the intention
was to maintain most of the home’s interior elements, but a significant amount of
structural repair was needed. In order to preserve the home’s historic character,
Above: The loft is breezy and restful, its rich indigo grass cloth softened by floral upholstery,
wovens, rattan furnishings and iridescent shell “drink drops.” Right: the master bedroom,
with its custom bed and headboard, Schumacher wallpaper that ascends to the ceiling and
cylindrical chandelier, was fashioned as a cocoon of sorts, and a retreat made for two.
As the historic homes of this enclave are so
tightly knit, Elle’s vision for custom drapes in an
outdoor acrylic fabric were hung on the porch
for privacy. Right: a gem of an intimate backyard
boasts an 8x8-foot gunite spa, outdoor shower
and teak furniture for lounging.
Deuberry, who oversaw the construction on the project, shipped the
original 200-year-old framing and floorboards to Ohio, where they were
stripped and re-milled by renowned Amish craftspeople and reinvented
as the flooring, wall paneling, cabinetry, built-ins and fireplace mantels.
Given that the architects and builder were working largely from Ohio
offices, Elle found herself in a secondary leadership role, serving as
their liaison and facilitating day-to-day operations alongside builder
and carpenter Junior Froes. She relished it. “The architects, builders
and subcontractors looked to Elle to guide the decisions,” Williams
explains. Elle had become the project’s compass and translator, and
ensured that the client’s vision was brought to life.
The result is a “symphony,” says Elle, a joyful home dripping with
“pattern play” and a “tension,” albeit stress-free, between past and
present. Every room is unique and treated to a high level of detail. The
window treatments alone, with their trims, fringes, borders and drapery
pulls, put the designers in another league, while the fact that they
shopped Nantucket retailers for the majority of the furnishings, accents
and necessities only adds to what Elle calls “a happy project.”
With its big, bold use of color and cheerful composition, the home and
its kick-up-your-heels vibe redefine coastal interior design. The client
deserves much of the credit, however, asserts the mother-daughter
team, for allowing Elle to execute her craft in a way that was creative
and limitless. Not unlike Nantucket itself, that freedom created magic.
A modern vacation home years in the
making brings organic beauty beachside.
It isn’t every day that a Cape Cod home on the ocean
becomes available, says Lindsay Bentis, founder and
principal of Thread by Lindsay Bentis. Such homes, with
their sandy heirloom settings, remain in families for
generations. After looking for such a property for years, and
making memories with her family further inland, a longtime
client of Bentis (her first, in fact) and Owner/Project
Executive Steven Overstreet of S.J. Overstreet Construction
Co., Inc. finally had the opportunity to purchase a home on
the shores of the Atlantic. Patience had delivered paradise.
The location was exactly what they had been looking for:
a narrow stretch of land crowned by golden coastal vistas,
which, hails Bentis, “are the most spectacular views of any
house I’ve ever seen on the Cape.”
Sun
Salutation
capecoddesignguide.com 67

“The home is modern in the most
perfect way. It has clean lines but with
materials that feel like they had a hand
in them, like someone made them.”
—Lindsay Bentis
Initially, the intention was to renovate the 1980s era post
and beam structure, reuniting the team from the client’s
suburban renovation 10 years prior, which included Bentis
and Overstreet, as well as Principal Kent Duckham of
Duckham Architecture & Interiors, Paul Reidt, president of
Kochman Reidt + Haigh Cabinetmakers, and Founder and
Principal Stephanie Hubbard of SiteCreative Landscape
Architecture. Once they began, however, they found that
the original structure resisted their collective vision. Its
framework didn’t lend itself to the sea of possibilities or
celebrate the site’s sublime views, so they began anew.
What emerged was a beach home without compromise,
a transcendent, wholly authentic property in which the
landscape and built environment not only peacefully
coexist; they bring out the best in one another. Typically
professionals come in sequentially, explains Reidt, yet this
project unfolded as a true collaboration in which expertise
unique to each field came in at the ground floor and was
granted the freedom to shine. “The outcome,” says Reidt,
“is a fully integrated work of art.” Overstreet concurs,
praising the synergy of the organic, one-of-a-kind project
and a process that moved like a “design/build.”
68
capecoddesignguide.com

Above: A 28-foot multi-sliding Marvin door with
an automated screen makes up most of the 30-
foot ocean-facing wall. Right: The ridge skylight
by Wasco was implemented early in the design.
It bathes the kitchen in sunlight and was sized to
match the width and length of the stairwell. An
art installation by Carolina Sardi was conceived
expressly for the site. Bentis and Sardi collaborated
on the formation of its metal disks to give the array
a certain freedom, and Bentis painted the black and
white art that hangs across the way. The recessed
niche of the living room was also a must. “Everyone
loves a big, open floor plan,” says Bentis, “but it’s
nice to have a space to curl up within them.”
capecoddesignguide.com 69

Bentis, who grew up near the beaches of Malibu,
was encouraged to channel the inside/outside living
opportunities of homes in LA. “You can make that kind of
West Coast house on the East Coast,” the client told her.
Duckham, who is known for his traditional seaside
architecture, embraced the stylistic departure and the
aesthetic that Bentis and the client had honed over the
years. Utilizing much of the existing footprint, he pursued a
design that ebbs and flows within the indoor and outdoor
realms, using generous amounts of glass, deep overhangs
and porches both populated and private.
Inside, the refreshing, clean-lined living spaces read like a
deep exhale, but their striking simplicity hides the rigors
demanded of the builder. The home’s parade of windows
and doors required a mammoth amount of steel and
structural wood beams, and created little space in the
exterior walls for a highly technical infrastructure. As for
the finish work, the modernist details—plaster reveals, no
trim, and intersections and courses of the tile—required
tremendous skill and effort from a construction standpoint.
“It’s a gorgeous house, and it looks simple,” says
Overstreet, “but even as a builder you don’t appreciate
how difficult it’s going to be until you start doing it.”
Bentis warded off any chill modern design can bring with
a palette pulled from nature, and an honesty to every
selection. In lieu of bold hues that might disrupt the views,
she focused instead on textures, materials and forms.
70
capecoddesignguide.com

Every surface has “a patina and a sort of worn quality,”
she says, and artistry. The character-rich Tay wood, which is
used lavishly throughout the home, has “a weathered yet
beautifully refined” look to its proprietary, silver-gray finish,
says Reidt, while the first-floor feature wall is lined with
hand glazed Moroccan tile with color variances “that bleed
and run like a watercolor,” says Bentis.
Soft finishes and furnishings were shown a level of care
Bentis would give her own home. She sourced buttery
leathers that get better with time, reupholstered vintage
finds with plush yet durable fabrics, designed bespoke
pieces with Loki Custom Furniture and even painted
artwork to hang on the walls. “Nothing is harsh or
perfect,” maintains Bentis. But the effect is.
Left: KR+H opted for white cabinetry in the
kitchen to allow the Ann Sacks tile of the island
and feature wall to prevail. Above: Bentis went
“soft and serene” in the master bedroom, which
has the feel of a cruise ship. Automated shades
shut out the peerless views with the touch of
a button. The master bath, by all accounts, is a
masterstroke. It was designed as a wet room,
with floating vanities, wall-mounted faucets and
a soft mix of marble and tile by Heath Ceramics.
capecoddesignguide.com 71

The property is “a perfect example of
what’s possible when great architects and
tradespeople collaborate, with the common
goal of creating something truly special.”
—DaviD Schumacher, Schumacher companieS
Stephanie Hubbard of SiteCreative also cultivated a
“natural and serendipitous” sensibility for the landscape
architecture, extending an elemental, holistic beauty to the
terrain, terraces, stone and structures. “We feel strongly
about the materiality of everything connecting,” reveals
Hubbard, “so the feel of the architecture and interiors is
brought into the landscape.” Again, the organic is prized.
SiteCreative developed a planting plan that feels like an
extension of the shoreline’s existing environment, with
new native plantings and curated coastal meadows that
look as if they took root long ago. Their installation was no
easy task; landscape contractor Schumacher Companies
had to factor in the timing of seed, plugs
and larger plant materials, as well as preserve and
safeguard mature trees. The effect was well worth the
effort, as the “relaxed” plantings soften the linear stone,
hardscape and boardwalks that stray from the surf to
crisscross the site.
Open-air settings were conceived as a series of outdoor
rooms with different functions and uses for each time of
day. Residents can bask in full sun, views or in the flames of
an outdoor fireplace, grill within a wind-sheltered outdoor
kitchen or relax in a shaded pergola surrounded by an
inland meadow. Such experiential moments honor the site,
which is, after all, why it all began.
72
capecoddesignguide.com

Left page: Hubbard designed
a pergola with sun shades as a
destination within the front yard.
It is sheltered from the wind, and
clad in the yellow cedar of the
architecture. This woodburning
granite fireplace and star of
an outdoor terrace was a joint
effort by Hubbard, Duckham and
Overstreet. Every stone, after
being detailed by the architect
and landscape architect,
was fabricated, labeled and
numbered by Freshwater Stone
out of Maine, and installed onsite
by crane, piece by piece.
Most clients approach ERT Architects with a desire for a traditional “Cape Cod” dream
home, a special property that can be passed down for generations. Whether a new
construction, renovation or addition, Principal Erik Tolley’s greatest satisfaction is realizing
that vision…and more.
With nearly 20 years of experience, the team at ERT Architects is well versed in New
England’s coastal architectural language, as well as in the aspects unique to designing
classic waterfront homes on Cape Cod, from environmental restrictions and regulatory
hurdles to important details like waterproofing and sustainability. ERT Architects prizes its
relationships with clients, and is intimately acquainted with their present and future needs,
lifestyle and wishes. For this reason, ERT prefers to partner with clients as early in the
process as possible, even before a real estate purchase, ensuring they’ll not only meet the
client’s design goals, they’ll surpass them.
Brotherly Love
A Cape Cod home with double vision
completes a family compound.
The family that plays together, stays together. That is
certainly the case for a tight-knit family that gathers
regularly on Cape Cod to enjoy the sun, surf and one
another’s company. Over 25 sons, daughters and
grandchildren join the family matriarch from Memorial Day
through the shoulder season in numbers that exceed the
bedrooms and bunk rooms of her exquisite seaside home,
and guest home. But what a wonderful problem to have.
Architect Tom Catalano of Catalano Architects and builder
Travis Cundiff of Travis Cundiff Associates, Inc., who had
conceived and built the original home, were part of the
solution: a new construction for two of her sons and their
families directly across the street.
Interior designer Susanne Csongor of SLC Interiors,
Joseph Wahler of landscape architectural firm Stimson and
landscape contractor R.P. Marzilli and Company, who also
worked on the main house, had a reunion of their own,
82
capecoddesignguide.com

ejoining Catalano and Cundiff to bring the new summer
retreat to fruition. With its classicist flair and red cedar
shingles, the home is similar in flavor to the main house,
pictured top right, and was designed on the same axis.
The front doors of the two homes are aligned, in fact, as if
waving hello. And while the Gambrel Shingle Style “uses
the same materials and architectural motifs as the main
home,” says Catalano, “the interior of the new home is a
bit more playful, as befitting the younger generation.”
The landscape, too, which is linear and more woodland in
spirit than its seaside companion with its series of outwardlooking
“garden rooms,” explains Wahler, was crafted with
the youthful residents in mind. It is largely unprogrammed,
with plenty of open space and two key destinations within
the greater field: a grove-side, rectangular fire pit and
a monolithic granite ring (illuminated at its base) that
the kids use as a play object, running along its top, that
encircles a favorite tree.
capecoddesignguide.com 83

This cozy family room is shared by both
wings and serves as a central meeting
point for the two families. It opens to
the rear terrace via a 15-foot Marvin
lift-and-slide door.
From the outside, the stately summer home fits in well with
its neighbors. Inside, however, it has a double vision, with
everything each family needs—two kitchens, individual
entrances, living rooms, private stairs, bedrooms—in two
L-shaped wings, conjoined by a central core, with a shared
main stair, living room and, of course, the front door.
As one can imagine, constructing this type of home,
fast-tracked for summer occupancy, required twice the
effort and orchestration. Cundiff was a skilled maestro,
assembling subcontractors with the skills as well as the
right personalities, and tackling the build in phases, with
teams for the north and south wings. At one point 60
people were working on the site. “The coordination was
the greatest challenge,” says Cundiff, “but that’s my job.”
For the interior design, Csongor was “conscious to
keep the amenities and level of decoration consistent
throughout, so as not to stir up any sibling rivalry!”
she shares. Having worked with the family for years,
Csongor “has a great understanding of their playful,
yet sophisticated style and love of color,” which found
expression in fresh hues and graphic patterns. She was
careful to deliver equitable yet individualized living spaces,
each fabulous in its own right and as part of the whole.
Much like family. Every job should be like this, muses
Cundiff, imbued with the trust of the client and team. This
rapport led to the fulfillment of a grandmother’s dream: a
well-loved, well used home that allows the grandkids to
simply cross the street for a visit or a swim.
84
capecoddesignguide.com

Top: In the dining room, Csongor used a round pedestal table to facilitate an easy circulation to the adjoining
living spaces, and a playful mix of wood tones. The bold geometrics of the Thibaut wallpaper and Formations
chandelier work cohesively with the other rooms of the home, without feeling “homogenous,” says Csongor.
Above: the north kitchen blends crisp white cabinetry with varying shades of ocean blue. “It is their Cape
house,” says Cundiff, “so they want it to feel that way.”
As most of the living occurs on the first floor, Gakidis embraced the horizontality of the architectural style to create an open-concept layout with
many vignettes and individualized moments. Cape & Island Kitchen worked with Gakidis + Stewart on the stove area abutting a seating area;
the bar and beverage nook that stands in for a butler’s pantry; and on a long central island, complete with counter seating, a sink and plenty of
shelving. The homeowner had a designer’s eye and selected materials and finishes that would be at home on the beach or in downtown Boston—
quarter sawn white oak cabinetry in a cashew stain, multitonal tile and Vermont Danby marble.
90
a home for
ALL SEASONS
Fulfilling, full-time living by the sea
“Falmouth is now a desirable residential alternative to the upscale Boston
suburbs,” says George Gakidis of Gakidis + Stewart Design Group, and
making Cape Cod one’s primary home is an emerging trend. “Initially a place
to vacation, the Cape is now a permanent option for many.” As a Falmouth
native himself, Gakidis can see the allure of the ocean, beautiful seasons and
resort amenities that prompt a “reverse commute.” Add in the current climate
and health crisis and suddenly there is all the more reason to take shelter in
one of Massachusetts’ most enchanting locales.
There is a difference in approach when designing homes for year-round
residence versus summer home inhabitance, as illustrated by the architectural
firm’s recent design, a Craftsman-meets-Prairie Style home by the sea. “It’s not
capecoddesignguide.com 91

Gakidis created a home that
is meant to be “enduring” and
without a “time stamp,” he
says. To that end, they selected
contextual materials that will last
forever: shingles, copper, standing
seam roofs and stonework.
The architectural elements are
the perfect complement to the
landscape design of Maria Hickey &
Associates.
Left: the features of the home have
amenities for outdoor living in the
summer and shoulder season, as
well as for inclement weather and
winter use. The lower level fosters
year-round wellness and features
a steam bath, cedar sauna and
a “swim in place” pool with an
illuminated wall and sliding doors
that open to the family room.
92 capecoddesignguide.com

The goal was to create an
oceanfront residence designed
to delight and endure.
a beach house,” says Gakidis, driving home the distinction.
“It’s a house that’s on the ocean.” As such, much like we all
do September through June, the home has to work harder
for its residents, capitalizing not only on its incredible
vistas, but on design solutions that make daily living a joy.
“Every job we do is catered to that client and a site,” says
Gakidis, and this home’s inventive design is a testament
to a collaborative process with hands-on homeowners.
That dynamic creates a truly custom home with out-of-thebox
ideas, like the reinterpreted kitchen, dining and great
room area, in which food preparation and visiting with
guests occur in one and the same space, or the creation of
the bar, beverage and appliance alcove that stands in for
a butler’s pantry. Little nooks and zones abound within an
overarching “floating floor plan” that ushers in the airiness
and light of waterfront living and allows the owners to
reconfigure furnishings should they so choose.
Given its locale—which is, says Gakidis, “the reason they
are there”—the home fully embraces indoor-outdoor
living. Its sloped site allowed the house to open up
privately to the ocean, and Gakidis used that development
to his advantage. The lower level represents a “casual way
of life,” and features a small indoor pool, sauna and steam
bath, which opens up completely to the family room,
which, in turns, spills out to a covered porch, the grass, the
dock and, ultimately, the ocean. It’s essentially a series of
stacked outdoor rooms and a year-round situation,” says
Gakidis. Yet the home may have an even better feature....
When the rest of the world descends on Cape Cod for the
summer, they are already there.
Bachand mostly works with tongue and groove pine, but he also
works with oak, walnut, mahogany as well as specialty woods.
Oftentimes Bachand will create tables from old wallboards or
flooring, giving homeowners a vestige from the past. Reclaimed
doors crafted from wallboards salvaged from a renovation are
also popular, as are contemporary styles.
Talking Shop
Ray Bachand of 60nobscot on the art of crafting
custom barn doors
“One at a Time, One of a Kind” is how Ray Bachand approaches
every piece of furniture he constructs at 60nobscot. Following a career
in the music software industry and as a teacher at Berklee College of
Music, Bachand is now enjoying a full-time gig in woodworking at his
Cape Cod shop.
While he crafts custom furniture including live-edge tables, coffee
and console tables, media cabinets, sliding mirrors and more, he is
best known for his handcrafted barn doors. He jokes that he hates
doing anything twice, and the result is heirloom quality work for builders,
architects, designers, and discerning homeowners.
Beyond their beauty (and popularity on HGTV), barn doors “solve a lot
of problems,” says Bachand, and can be used as room dividers and in
hallways, bedrooms, pantries and anywhere “you can’t swing a door.”
Double doors work well if there isn’t enough room to slide the door,
bypass doors (a great replacement for failing closet bi-fold doors) don’t
require room on the sides, while two doors closing on the same plane
allow access to the full opening.
60nobscot’s barn door styles vary from rustic to highly contemporary,
adding allure and function in any design. The shop’s “turn-key service”
builds, supplies hardware and installs barn doors and is available by
appointment. To learn more, visit 60nobscot.com.
21 st Century ConstruCtion
E
Established in 2016, Cape Cod Panel manufactures premium custom residential and commercial
exterior walls, interior partitions, gables and components for wood frame construction. Unlike traditional
stick framing, our custom panels and components optimize the build process and provide a superior
frame, cutting the wood framing time in half, and reducing material waste and field mistakes.
Our trademark design process, which is derived from the builder or architect’s plan, is the cornerstone
of what we do. Cape Cod Panel reviews and recreates the plans using 3-D framing technology,
readying the optimized materials for our computerized saw. The high-quality interior and exterior wall
components are then delivered to the job site, in the order of how and when they are needed, making
the construction process as efficient as possible, and bringing a greater return on investment for general
contractors, homeowners and framers.
Cape Cod Panel’s wall panels, partitions and components grace projects in every town on Cape Cod.
Panel erection and full frame services are available.
