the administration. The permanent exhibition begins on the floor above with
the question “What is Europe?” and leads visitors upwards in a spiral and
thematic-chronological structure—upwards toward the light. The museum
sees itself as a place of informal learning, leaving it up to the visitors themselves
to find their way through the exhibition, which is made up of multi media
installations and interactive stations to a large extent. Rental tablets and headphones
explain the contents and connections in the 24 official languages of
the EU.
The exhibition planners, Seville’s APD—Acciona Productions and Design, followed
an introverted concept, taking a different approach to the architects:
they transformed the exhibition spaces in the old and new buildings into a
large black box. But the house can resume its mediating role at any time.
Then maybe as the “House of the European Future?”
