When the best materials meet old school craftsmanship,
to the shingling of the roof, we pay attention to the most minute details. The way we build a home
FROM THE PUBLISHER
I have decided this fall to do a major renovation to my 1780’s home
in the town’s historical center. I can’t wait to tap into the wonderful
tradespeople who have graced BDG over the past 22 years. I have
pulled every past issue and scoured my website to source everything
I could possibly want for my new farmhouse kitchen. Who knew that
windows would be one of the biggest decisions I would have to
make? (Breakthrough trends in that industry, I’ll tell you!) Of course, I
only have to look to “One with Nature” (page 126-135) or “Carved in
Stone” (pages 116-125) to see the wonders that windows can do.
Like me, I hope this issue provides you with endless inspiration. We
are proud to be New England’s first and longest-running publication—
in print and web. We have worked hard on our web and social
media platforms to showcase the current trends and feature the top industry professionals. I
love how Instagram is a great quick glance into one’s work and how the web has evolved into a
“storytelling” platform.
It’s clear that today’s homeowners desire to put their own handprint on their spaces. They are
requesting customized designs, craftsmanship and product, and the industry is responding. Just
look at pages 185 and 187 to learn about inspired local artists who are raising the bar in reclaimed
wood and metalwork and check out “Elemental Style” (page 104-113) to see the captivating—and
unique—ways that professionals are harnessing the energy of air, fire, water and earth.
We are all being held to a higher standard on what we can deliver. And, at BDG, we are up for the
challenge. So stay tuned, because we are launching a new and exciting product later this fall. Not
only will it be great for you, our readers, but it will be another way that we can do justice to the
talented professionals featured within these pages, who have inspired us all.
Cheers!
CLASSIC AMERICAN ARCHITECTURE
20
bostondesignguide.com

PROfile
Whether in Boston proper or on the island of Martha’s
Vineyard, the homes of Patrick Ahearn Architect are
distinctive yet wholly personalized. From traditional new
constructions to authentic renovations and restorations, Patrick
Ahearn’s residential work is both timeless and timely.
The firm’s design style, which spans many forms of classical
architecture, is largely historically motivated yet adapted
to reflect of-the-moment technologies and the way that
homeowners like to live and play today.
A Patrick Ahearn home captures the form’s original spirit and
is deeply rooted in its site. Whether a structure was first built
for a sea captain during the 1800s or crafted yesterday,
Ahearn believes he is most successful when his work goes
quietly unnoticed on the streetscape, appearing as if it has
long been part of the neighborhood architectural fabric.
Having designed more than 200 homes on Martha’s
Vineyard alone, and countless more in the historic Back Bay
and beyond, Patrick Ahearn Architect has created a winning
design philosophy that is as much about beauty and tradition
as it is about lifestyle.
ARCHITECT PATRICK AHEARN
RELEASES HIS NEW BOOK
Coffee tables, living rooms and libraries everywhere have a beautiful new book to showcase, as
Patrick Ahearn, one of New England’s preeminent classical architects, has released the display-worthy
new monograph, Timeless: Classic American Architecture for Contemporary Living.
Beyond its striking good looks, Timeless reveals the
theories and practices that have made Ahearn the success
he is today. Ahearn, a Fellow of the American Institute of
Architects, has an innate ability to balance the romance
of traditional architecture with the tenets of modernism,
creating incomparable settings that are steeped in a
sense of place yet reflective of how people like to live in
the 21st century.
While Ahearn, principal of Patrick Ahearn Architect, has
designed over 500 homes in some of the most soughtafter
destinations in the world, Timeless showcases 18
of these iconic properties that all, in their own fashion,
shed light on the guiding principle of Ahearn’s greatergood
theory. That is, “that architecture has the power
to improve lives, increase happiness and to encourage
friendly and familiar interactions.”
VISION ACCOMPLISHED
At F.H. Perry Builder, they’re big on time-honored things like craftsmanship, elegance, taste and
aesthetics. Sometimes that means blending new with old. Sometimes it means paying special
attention to a persnickety modern detail. No matter what, they never lose sight of who you are and
why you hired them in the first place.
In fact, F.H. Perry Builder is so committed to being continually “out in front,” start to finish that they
will assign a dedicated project manager—a resourceful, experienced, I-wish-this-person-could-stayaround-forever
professional who works exclusively on your project—at your job site from open to
close, with you. This person responds to changing circumstances with agility, forward thinking and
intelligence. That’s how F.H. Perry Builder ensures that both schedule and workmanship – and you –
remain uncompromised.
Now into its second generation, owner Allison Perry Iantosca and her team thrive because they
treat all of their craft-based projects with the values they were founded upon; transparency and
integrity are non-negotiable. And they believe it takes humanity, empathy and adaptability to build
sophisticated projects for the sophisticated people who live in them. F.H. Perry Builder knows you
don’t settle for “good enough” and neither do they.
A sculptural contemporary home
exalts its craggy coastal views
bostondesignguide.com 117

“Everyone likes modern cars and modern
fashion, why not modern architecture?”
muses Adolfo Perez, principal of Adolfo
Perez Architect, who is known throughout
New England for his contemporary constructs.
“To say you don’t like modern architecture
just doesn’t make sense to me as an
aesthetic choice.”
Many of the style’s hallmarks—an inherent relationship
to site, a mindfulness for materials, a bona fide
indoor-outdoor relationship, a flat roof—can become
pastiches if not well thought out. That isn’t the case
for Perez. With all of his architecture, he ruminates
over details large and small. A new home in Manchester-by-the-Sea,
perched atop a cliff overlooking the
rocky terrain and tides of the Atlantic, epitomizes his
aesthetic approach.
Says Paul Reidt, president of Kochman Reidt + Haigh
Cabinetmakers (KR+H), who worked on the project,
“Adolfo can go from the global to a molecular level
of detail.” Which, for this home, meant “a very crisp
modernist detailing and an exacting vocabulary.”
The home’s exterior represents the global end of the
spectrum. “We all agreed that the home had to be
stone,” says Perez, who selected granite due to the
pronounced stone outcropping fringed by thickets
of vegetation. Perez would have gone darker yet to
reflect the palisades, but the client preferred a lighter
shade of gray. The granite chosen has an organic
appeal that speaks to its site, as well as permanence,
says Perez, and a windswept—and sunswept—vibe.
The roof is a maintenance-free, lead-coated copper.
Where others in New England have a predilection for
wood, shingles or clapboard, Perez employs stucco,
stone and lead-coated zinc—“durable materials that
can stand the test of time.”
The limestone fireplace commands attention as the focal
point in the room and serves as an architectural divider. It is
designed and detailed differently one side to the other, with a
beautiful bench feature by Cumar, Inc.
The contemporary kitchen, which was zoned specifically to
take full advantage of the home’s main asset—the ocean.
The rectangular layout has a “sociable arrangement” with
dual islands topped by hardy quartzite by Cumar, Inc. that
“waterfalls” on both ends. The counters are echoed by the
limestone and tile installed by Installations Plus of the hearth.
bostondesignguide.com 121

Perez uses materials to forward the design. His choices
are integral to the structure, sculptural even. “This same
house rendered in wood or plaster wouldn’t look the
same,” he says. Besides, granite, steel and glass have an
essential nature, he continues. “They’re not trying to be
anything they’re not.”
Glass was a must for this private home that drinks in the
azure waters at its feet. By all accounts, the setting is
exquisite, rife with cantilevered spaces that take you
closer still to the elements. “The home is in service to
the view,” says Perez. “The view becomes everything.
The house is almost incidental to it.”
The architect doesn’t see the structure as modern with
a capital “M,” no doubt because the homeowners—
fearlessly, credits Reidt—left a traditional home in
Hamilton, for this clean, minimalist new home by the
sea. Perez, together with interior designer Meichi Peng of
Meichi Peng Design Studio, called for interior architecture
that is as crisp as can be, using rich materials of stone,
wood and tile in ways that keep the surfaces simple, and
the forms seamless and appreciated.
In the kitchen, KR+H sank its teeth into the modernist
details and finishes selected by Peng, like “assertive”
quartzite countertops, an absence of hardware (and the
complications thereof), and shelving fronted by clear and
back-painted glass, which is, typically, not a cabinetmaker’s
medium. “To the casual observer, modernist detailing
may look simple, but it isn’t,” explains Reidt, giving a nod
to the molecular. “Every detail plays a role.”
The bedroom overhangs the ocean and revels in the view.
The glass balconies nearly disappear but are essential, says
Perez. “When you do floor-to-ceiling glass, you have to open
up to something.” Left: The stair is the knuckle of the home,
and takes a sculptural shape. The travertine floor comes from
a full block from Italy that was dry laid and numbered. Its
connected veining is “unlike any other project,” says Peng.
122
bostondesignguide.com

ostondesignguide.com 123

The house’s many seating areas have distinct designs and purposes
within its open plan. This allows the homeowner to experience the
living spaces in many different ways—from convening at the dinner
table to quietly reading a book by the ocean.
124
bostondesignguide.com

For the furnishings, Peng took a gentler approach, using
the interior design scheme to reconcile the clients’ two
disparate worlds. Peng struck a transitional balance within
the homeowners’ comfort zone that also ties in the cherished,
classic art collection from their former home. “We
didn’t go for slick, modern furniture,” maintains Peng.
“We wanted a clean, modern look, but with a softness.” In
this sense, the furnishings became a bridge between the
artwork and the contemporary interior, and the art was
better for it, underscores Peng, because of the contrast.
The home’s monochromatic palette was driven by the
landscape, with pale sea foam colors that stretch from one
room to the next. The overarching concept reflects the
“tranquility of the space,” says Peng, as well as the outside
environment. It is light and airy, and inspired by the
ocean vistas, rock formations and natural colors of the site.
“From the wood shingles to the copper downspouts
—Bryan Sweeney, Sweeney Custom Homes
128
bostondesignguide.com

Standing within her elegant, cream-colored
living room, which adjoins a bright, four-season
sunroom, which, in turn, opens up to lush
grounds gilded by the dappled light of deciduous
canopy trees, a homeowner shares that she and
her husband sought out Patrick Ahearn Architect
to design “a new home that looks old” for her
picturesque, forested lot in Wellesley.
They went to the right place. Brand-new builds imbued
with understated grace and generations-old character are
a hallmark of the Boston and Martha’s Vineyard-based
firm. True to his unique brand of architectural alchemy,
principal Patrick Ahearn, FAIA, together with Sweeney
Custom Homes & Renovations, delivered a picturesque
gambrel very much at ease in its idyllic New England setting,
or, shares the architect, “a grand country house that
feels like it could have been built in the ’20s.”
The only tip-off that the home might be a modern-day
creation is its pronounced connection to the outdoors, a
virtue increasingly prized today. Almost every room of the
house ushers in the natural backdrop through oversized
windows and French doors, creating “romantic, intimate
and carefully crafted spaces that change with the seasons,”
says Ahearn.
Principal Dan Gordon of Dan Gordon Landscape Architects
saw to it, specifying a mix of native and ornamental
plantings that brings blossoms come spring, vivid greenery
throughout the summer, fiery hues in autumn and
snow-draped evergreens and crystalline boughs in winter,
enhancing the landscape in a way that develops the site’s
existing topography. Like Ahearn, Gordon’s touch is
unassuming but masterful, and respectful of the implied
history of the terrain. “We were trying to create a landscape
that felt like it fit,” says Gordon, nestling “the home
comfortably into the natural setting.”
The living room and adjoining sunroom occupy the more formal
wing of the home. Coffered ceilings, a limestone fireplace surround,
alabaster lamps and refined furnishings coalesce for an air
of serenity and a garden feel. The occasional accent of burnished
wood—a favorite of the homeowner—is the deepest tone in a
largely ivory color palette.
130 bostondesignguide.com

ostondesignguide.com 131

Though large, the home has a “cottage-like feel,” says
Ahearn, and scale is the secret weapon. While the architect
could have designed the home up to 36 feet tall, he
explains, he capped it at 26, eschewing ostentation for a
sense of intimacy and timelessness that makes it all but
impossible to discern if it was constructed days or decades
ago.
Interior designer Mollie Johnson of Mollie Johnson Interiors
was like-minded in her approach, weaving a look of
classic, quiet elegance within rooms that relate to one another,
and to the architecture as a whole. “Mollie Johnson
really got it,” praises Ahearn. “The scale of the furniture,
the materials, the soft colorway, her perfect choices of
fabric and window treatments—she did a first-class job.”
The panel system of a modest stairway continues to the second
floor, drawing you upstairs. Right: “The shape of the gambrel form
is expressed within the bedroom chamber itself,” says Ahearn. It
is highly detailed and panelized, with an elliptical window with
treetop views and a private balcony.
“The master bedroom suite falls outside the main
circulation of the house and is meant to be a quiet
oasis overlooking the woodland.” —Patrick Ahearn
The home’s symmetry and organization provide Dan Gordon with
an added dimension for landscape design. A family room and
breakfast area lead to an open-air porch (complete with a chunky,
fieldstone fireplace), forming the more casual zone of the home.
Right: A bluestone terrace off the central dining room is flanked
by an alfresco porch and enclosed sunroom for “the best of both
worlds,” says Ahearn.
134
Johnson attributes her success to the trust that developed
with the homeowner, along with a mutual affinity for
French and neoclassical design, antiques and a well-placed
Greek key pattern (“an obsession,” reveals Johnson).
Throughout the interiors, color and pattern were kept to
a minimum so as not to distract from the scenes unfolding
on the other side of the glass. When color is used, Johnson
turns to tones found in nature, like rich mahogany and
moss green, further strengthening the bond of the indoor
and outdoor realms.
There is a remarkable kinship between the terrain and
architecture. Natural features—like the pine grove with tall
oaks preserved in the arrival sequence and the ledge in
the rear of the home—as well as the house’s symmetry,
materials and organization provided Gordon with many
opportunities to cultivate interest, beauty and experiences
in outdoor living.
The landscape never steals the spotlight, however; it is an
intrinsic part of the whole. “Dan Gordon does beautiful
and thoughtful work,” says Ahearn, “yet it doesn’t upstage
the architecture.” Gordon finds the glory in “letting
the land be natural and letting it be itself.”
It is a symbiotic and seamless project to be sure. Between
the site conditions and the designed spaces, “the house
came together beautifully,’’ says Gordon. In the end, the
home has an idyllic and enduring appeal far exceeding the
clients’ expectations.
CRAFTSMANSHIP ACROSS THE BOARD
Craftsmanship, quality and speed, that’s the vision at the heart of Vintage Builders. That, of course,
and authenticity—right down to owner John Hourihan’s 1969 F100 shortbed Ford.
Vintage Builders builds homes like they should be made, that’s the nuts and bolts of it, doing the
work by hand and using only the finest materials. On a Vintage home, “nails are the only thing
you’ll find from a big box store,” says Hourihan; the company is dedicated to constructing houses
with a singular flair.
Old-school values, approachability and an enthusiasm for hard work are also prized. In fact,
Hourihan went into building because “he wanted to put a smile on someone’s face.”
Clients also find old-fashioned customer care and Vintage concierge service—homes have a
warranty for as long as you live there.
Meet Paul Meneses, founder of
Make Architectural Metalworking
There is nothing Paul Meneses, founder of Make Architectural
Metalworking, likes more than being hands-on in
his shop or on an installation, and present for the design
and fabrication of custom architectural metalwork. Good
thing, because the demand for his medium has exploded
within the last decade, and he has positioned his versatile
studio to ride the groundswell.
Meneses comes at metalworking from an art background.
He has molded galvanized and stainless steel for public
art in South Boston and contributed fabricated aluminum
for a rainbow-hued artscape at the Guggenheim Museum
and a stacked sculpture on the lawn of the Albright-Knox
Art Gallery. And, while he has done corporate work for
well-known commercial endeavors in places from L.A.,
and N.Y.C. to local Assembly Row, Make Architectural
Metalworking’s bespoke creations are also available to
homeowners, architects, builders and interior designers.
His studio, which is staffed by “like-minded people with
an attention to detail and craft,” includes welders, fabricators
and machinists, who work on projects large and
small. Though the
style is most often
clean-lined and contemporary,
pieces run
the gamut—taking
the form of stairs and
railings to furniture,
fireplace surrounds
and landscape features.
The metals are also varied. While steel (particularly
oxidized with a great dark patina) is the most popular,
bronze and stainless also have a following. They also work
in copper, aluminum, brass and titanium.
While Meneses has little time to devote to sculpture outside
the studio these days, Make’s one-of-a-kind pieces
feed that “creative and sculptural need.” Meneses is passionate
about his craft and where it takes him. Because of
the nature of the work, each day is unique—and fulfilling.
“Every project is a learning moment,” says Meneses. “You
take away something from every project.”
Jeff Soderbergh’s sculpture for Kohler captivates at 7 Tide
Photography: Liam McInerney
“We kept the gray side down,” says Soderbergh. “As you walk underneath it, the gray
part faces you, while the rest of the wood is all milled and beautiful and bright,” juxtaposing
shadow and shine.
When sustainable artist Jeff Soderbergh was
approached by Jamie Reardon, owner of Supply
New England, to provide a dramatic ceiling
element for their flagship showroom project
with Kohler on the waterfront, he urged them
to consider “what they wanted in their hearts.”
Once he saw the space and discussed initial
concepts, he set to sketching, dreaming up
the Kohler Wave, a hanging sculpture that
uses reclaimed wood salvaged from a nearby
pier from the early 1800s invoking the movement
of water. Director of Showrooms Sabrina
DaLomba and the team at Supply New England
were sold in one sketch.
DaLomba first learned of Soderbergh, who has
a Newport studio and a warehouse full of historical,
reclaimed materials that he crafts into
art, furniture and flooring, from a friend. The
referral came at the exact time she needed an
artist who does expressly what he does. “It’s
like it fell out of the sky,” she says, with wonder
in her voice. Once she learned that they could
“drill down regionally, not only to Boston, but
to the harbor” for the materials, it was a lock.
Building the Kohler Wave was a challenge, but
Soderbergh learned years ago to say yes to
things he hasn’t done. With 405 pieces in total,
and at 32x12 feet, the work would have to be
modular in order to get it in the door. A cradle
was designed to allow the work to be assembled
within it and lifted from the cradle rather
than the sculpture. Artisan Building Group
installed Soderbergh’s vision, with the full team
hoisting the Kohler Wave high, “like Olympic
rowers,” says Soderbergh.
Supply New England was so enamored with
Soderbergh’s work that they commissioned
Array, a second sculpture for the showroom.
The radiant work is comprised of ballast stone
dredged from Boston Harbor, and serves as a
rugged, organic backdrop to a chic, freestanding
Kohler tub with a ceiling filler that sends a
steady stream of water from above.
Both works required much in the way of
design, man-hours, tech and engineering, but
more than delivered the impact Supply New
England was after. Kohler was dazzled. Now,
says DaLomba, “they hope their customers see
the magic, too.”
Art
Makes the Difference
Just twenty minutes from Boston, on Route 9 in Natick, Renjeau Galleries maintains a
comprehensive collection of fine art by some of the region’s finest established and emerging artists.
The main gallery, a 100-year-old home with several showrooms, contains the majority of the
collection. A smaller annex building on the property provides an intimate space used for special
exhibitions, highlighting a particular artist, or private viewings.
Many customers enjoy scheduling appointments in the gallery to see the artwork they have
previewed on Renjeau’s expansive website. It’s an ideal solution for busy clients, and is often
combined with borrowing on approval or an in-home consultation, which enables clients to
visualize the art in the home or office space.
Additionally, Renjeau offers an incredible selection of custom framing choices as well as expert
fine art restoration.
Elegance
Meets Excellence
Boston Billiard Emporium
combines a passion for antiques
with painstaking craftsmanship.
PROfile l e
The “Golden Age of Billiards” lasted from the 1860’s until the Great Depression. During this
period, a billiard table was not simply a game table, it was a piece of furniture of the highest
caliber. These tables were made by the fi nest artisans, using rare woods from all over the world.
Since 1975, Boston Billiard Emporium has been New England’s leading conservator of
antique billiard tables. Owner Stephen Kelly combines his love of antiques with the painstaking
craftsmanship required to bring the exquisite billiard tables of a bygone era back to their
original grandeur.
Their tables have been featured in books, movies and magazines, as well as on NECN’s
“Dream Home” and PBS’ “This Old House”. Many of New England’s interior designers as well
as architects have planned their client’s billiard room around a billiard table and accessories
purchased from Boston Billiards.
New pool tables are also available at Boston Billiard Emporium. These tables can be
customized by selecting the species of wood, color of stain, cloth and pockets so that the table
works better in your space. You will also fi nd a great selection of accessories, as well as a fullservice
repairs department for anything that may go wrong with your table.
“We are the industry leader nationwide for the residential
installation of 6mm porcelain slabs.” —Talha Algur, owner

Ideal Tile of Newton brings “tile perfection” to its showroom and
has for 18 years. They work with the most prominent manufacturers
of glass, stone, ceramic, and porcelain, importing materials
directly from Italy. From vibrant water jet mosaics to pristine
porcelain slabs to on-trend subway tiles, the experienced sales
design team can satisfy every decorating need, beautifully.
At Ideal Tile, magnificent porcelain slabs are a specialty—the
company carries more than 61 colors and finish options and over
1200 slabs in stock. More and more residential and commercial
architects are specifying 6mm porcelain slabs for their designs,
and Ideal Tile has remained on the forefront of the material’s
technological advances for years. As a pioneer in the industry,
Ideal Tile has learned how to properly handle the porcelains to
ensure a perfect installation every time. Whether an application
calls for a single sheet of slab, or 120 slabs, the installation
demands an attention to detail and know-how. Ideal Tile’s level of
expertise has led them to develop installation techniques that have
since become the new standard in the industry.
Finishing
Young
Touch
Ideas Painting and Design takes
pride in creating a lasting finish that
begins with a meticulous focus on prep.
PROfile
J
Jeff Young brings more than his 35 years of painting experience to every job. Young
started Young Ideas, Inc. while studying architecture in college. Now, an architect
himself, Jeff understands the importance of detail and how critical the final finish is to the
outcome of the job. “On most renovation projects, painting is often the last thing done
and the finished surface is what’s visible when the job is completed.” Because of this,
Young and his crew of professional painters know the importance of prep work.
Young Ideas works with many of the top builders, architects, decorators and designers in
the Boston area to bring their vision to life. In addition to more traditional painting jobs,
the company does faux painting, textures and wallpapering.
