Newsletter MAY/JUNE 2008 The BPO Newsletter is prepared by the Baltic Transport Journal www.baltictransportjournal.com BPO Seminar 2008 in Brussels Transport investments in the Baltic Sea Region The Annual BPO Seminar, which was held on April 16 th in Brussels, gathered more than 20 persons including members of the European Parliament, representatives of transport trade organisations, ports, etc. Cities and ports innovating for an inter-dependent future The Ports of Stockholm will host the 11 th international conference “Cities and Ports innovating for an inter-dependent future.” The conference, organized by the International Association of Cities and Ports (IACP), will be held from June 23-27, 2008 at the Norra Latin Conference Centre in Stockholm and is expected to attract around 500 people. The theme of the conference will be the collaboration between cities and ports innovating for an inter-dependent future. During the event participants will have a great opportunity to exchange experiences, ideas, strategies and, above all else, to innovate in order to advance the collective goals and objectives of cities, ports, and the interests of the stakeholders. International world conferences are held every second year, the last conference took place in Sydney in 2006. All details about the conference are available at: www.citiesandports2008.com During the meeting, which took the form of a working lunch, a few speeches were given including the welcome addresses by Mrs. Anne E. Jensen (Member of the European Parliament and Member of the Transport and Tourism Committee of the EP) and Julian Skelnik (BPO Chairperson) and a separate presentation given by prof. Andrzej Grzelakowski, Gdynia Maritime Academy, who gave a summary of the newly published Baltic Maritime Outlook 2007. Further presentations were given by Mr. Björn Neckman, Head of Public Affairs, Ports of Stockholm, who presented the strategy of the Nynäshamn project and Mr. Robin MacLeod, Technical Director, DCT Gdańsk SA, who gave a presentation on the deep sea container terminal in Gdańsk completed in October 2007. During the seminar the tremendous growth in containers handled at Baltic ports was discussed. In order to follow the growth of the cargo flow, the container terminals’ capacity has to be enlarged. Prof. Grzelakowski forecasts a further concentration in container shipping. The process of concentration is to be fuelled by the development of the Motorways of the Sea and will benefit bigger and better located ports in their main logistics supply chains in the Baltic. The meeting was organized by BPO in cooperation with Mrs. Anne E. Jensen and enjoyed with great interest. The event will be organized again in future years. The Conference will be dedicated to innovations, port efficiency, the environment, and client changes in the ports.
