Maritime An extra 100,000 TEU for Gdynia and Kotka The Baltic Container Outlook 2008 Today container transport constitutes a level of 11.2% of the global seaborne traffic. It should be indicated that over one billion tons of cargo are transported in boxes. Thereby, a total amount of 143m TEU has been transported by ships. At the same time, world sea ports serviced 480m TEU. Singapore, with a total turnover of 27.9m TEU, remains the largest container seaport, surpassing Shanghai (26.2m TEU) and Hong Kong (23.9m TEU). Because of the rapid growth of Chinese seaports, a change in the top position is expected to come next year. Quite important changes are also visible on the European market. Last year in Rotterdam reloading surpassed 10m TEU for the first time, clearly indicating an increase in market exchange on the Old Continent. The rapid growth in maritime container transport is also noticed on the Baltic Sea. The total turnover of the seaports reached a level of 7.5m TEU in 2007 (an annual growth of 16.8%). The most important Baltic container market remains Russia with St. Petersburg being the largest container port in the region. They served a total of 1.7m TEU in 2007. However, exceptional changes during the past year were observed in the ports of Gdynia and Kotka. Both noted an increase of 100,000 TEU in handling turnover, which led to the result of 614,000 TEU in Gdynia and 571,000 TEU in Kotka. The top places were taken by St. Petersburg, Göteborg, Gdynia, Kotka, Århus and Helsinki. Along with the increase in handling, the capacity and the amount of ships in the global container fleet is increasing as well. The number of ships used only for container transport, i.e., full cellular ships has increased by 11.5% (up to 3,904 units) and their average capacity has increased by 4% to reach a level of 2,417 TEU. At the same time, the Baltic container fleet increased by an additional 17 ships. Thanks to this, Baltic container operators together possess a fleet of 152 ships with a total capacity of 113.7 thousand TEU. The top positions among the 19 container operators are occupied by Unifeeder, Team Lines and MSC. All container lines currently working on the Baltic are feeder vessels. For example, the largest Baltic carrier Unifeeder connects six hubs on the North Sea with 16 Baltic ports.
