Novice takes big photo prize
ROLLESTON resident Jaymie

the image for this year’s fishing
licence.
The photograph was one of
four monthly winners that went
to a public vote to decide which
would win the Fish and Game
photo competition.
Winning by a margin of 481
votes, Challis said she was over
the moon at scooping first place.
She has only started taking
photos a year ago and has the
goal of becoming a professional
photographer in the future.
The photo was taken during
a family holiday to Central
Otago late last year and they had
decided to have a day out fishing
at the popular fishing spot of
Butchers Dam about 10min from
Alexandra.
“The guys were out enjoying
themselves and everything just
lined up, and with a spectacular
backdrop it made for a great
photo,” Challis said.

Peter Meecham, who was
one of three judges that decided
the monthly winners, said “a really
beautiful shot, that all three
judges said we would have been
proud to have taken ourselves.”

used for the 2020/21 fishing
licence, Challis receives $2000
from Kilwell Sports.
A total of 276 photos were considered
by a judging panel over
four months.
Outdoor wholesaler Kilwell
Sports sponsored the competition
offering $4000 in prizes
making it one of the biggest
photo competitions in New Zealand
for prize money.
Challis was also presented with
the David Hallett Trophy for the
Fish & Game NZ licence photo
competition.
Hallett, an internationally
renowned and award-winning
news and wildlife photographer,
was one of the first photographers
for Fish & Game magazine and
passed away unexpectedly in 2016.

Second
meet the
candidates
event
A SECOND event for residents to
meet the district’s candidates has
been planned for 10 days before
the general election.
The event will be held by the
Lincoln Rotary Club and will take
place on September 9.
Organiser Pat Nicholas said:
“This is the third time that Lincoln
Rotary have organised this event,
and being so close to the election it
will be a lively meeting as the five
candidates that have so far agreed
to come along state their positions
on the hot political topics.”
Each candidate will be given a
5min time slot to let the members of
the public know where they stand
on issues in the district.
There will then be a further
5min of questions from the public
directed to the candidate.
There are five candidates currently
confirmed to attend.
They are Act’s Stuart Armstrong,
Abe O’Donnell (Green), Reuben
Davidson (Labour), Nicola Grigg
(National) and Bronnie Lyell (New
Conservative Party).

held on September 9, 7.30pm, at
the Lincoln Event Centre.
