WHITEBAITERS
WEEK
• By Devon Bolger
A MAN in his 20’s held
off a group armed with
pool cues and wrenches
who tried to break into his
caravan on Sunday night.
Senior Sergeant Dean
Harker said the man
heard a knock on the
door of his caravan on
McLaughlin St, Darfield.
When he opened the
door five people tried to
try and enter the caravan.
“The man was trying to
hold the door closed at the
same time. A struggle occurred
and they ended up
out on the footpath. The
victim was able to call the
police,” said Harker.
The victim was not injured.
Nothing was taken
from the caravan.
The group discarded
their weapons and left in
two vehicles.
“We are still working to
determine if the parties
knew each other. We’ve got
some good leads that we are
going with,” said Harker.
Crusaders chief executive
Colin Mansbridge said
he was limited in what he
could say as it is a private,
employment-related matter
involving a “now former”
Crusaders employee.
He would not say if
the former employee
would be liable for the
vehicle.
Asked if he was on
Crusaders-related
business on the
weekend of the crash,
Mr Mansbridge said:
“Absolutely not.”
“It goes without saying
that the Crusaders do not
condone driving under the
influence, irrespective of
whether someone is in a
company vehicle or not. We
are unable to comment further
on the specific details
relating to this incident.”
Police would not discuss
the driver but said he was
“incredibly lucky” he didn’t
kill himself or an innocent
party.
“He was incredibly
remorseful and understood
the consequences of what
he had done,” said Senior
Constable Andy
Williamson, who
attended the crash.
As a result of
the crash, Williamson
had been
invited to give a
talk to Lincoln
Rugby Football
Club members.
The drink-driver had been
watching a game at Lincoln.
It is understood he is
not a member of the club.
Williamson said talking
at sports clubs and
to hotel patrons was part
of a Selwyn-wide police
strategy to educate people
– particularly young men
– about the perils of drink
driving.
Over and above the
carnage drink-drivers
caused on the road, losing
a driver licence could have
far-reaching consequences,
said Williamson.
A number of countries
still refused entry to people
who had a drink-driving
conviction. Young rugby
players wanting to further
their careers in Canada for
example, or work there,
would not be able to get in
if they had a drink-driving
conviction, he said.
The crash came during
a Canterbury-wide police
crackdown on drink driving
in July.
Police tested 14,042 motorists
during the month.
Sixty-seven were over the
legal limit of 250mcg/l, 32
of those over the second
limit of 400mcg/l.
