School programme to
end tall poppy syndrome
A PILOT programme aiming
to end tall poppy syndrome
that first launched at Rolleston
School is proving successful.
The E Tu Tangata programme
was created by 24/7 youth work
and started last month.
Rolleston
School principal
Simon
Moriarty said
it has had a
massive impact
on the school
so far.
 Simon
Moriarty
“For us, we
are really trying
to establish
an E Tu Tangata mindset. It is
how we want our students, staff
and community to see themselves
and others. That’s opened
a lot of doors for us.
“It is about our students seeing
the value they have within
themselves, through their skills,
through their talents. It is shown
in the school in small acts of
kindness through to looking at
organisations or individuals that
are in need.”
The three values of the
programme are: You have value,
we succeed together and others
matter.
Moriarty said an example of
how the programme is working
in the school is through its
student leaders.
“We have 15 student leaders
this year and they have been
divided into three groups, one is
driving ‘you have value’ and is
looking at how we can celebrate
the success of students. Our
second group is looking at
‘we succeed together’ and
is organising different sport
COMMUNITY:
The Rolleston
School student
leaders will be
leading the way
for the new
E Tu Tangata
campaign
aiming to end
tall poppy
syndrome.
events or talent quests that
create opportunities to work
together.
“The third group is leading
‘others matter’, they are looking
for ways that we can be present
in our community whether that
be through fundraising or giving
our time.”
About 50 schools across the
country have signed up for the
E Tu Tangata programme since
it was launched.
