14 Wednesday August 12 2020 News Celebrate Daffodil Day ORGANISATIONS and businesses in the district are being asked to help celebrate Daffodil Day by decorating their facilities in yellow. Cancer Society Selwyn Centre co-ordinator Jackie Claridge said she has been blown away by the response to her Paint Selwyn Yellow campaign. “It would be fantastic to get our whole area behind such an important cause, every day across New Zealand 65 kiwis are diagnosed with cancer. “We hope businesses and organisations in Rolleston, Darfield, Leeston, Lincoln, Prebbleton and West Melton will come on board to not only raise funds, but raise awareness of the Cancer Society and the service we provide to Kiwis in our communities.” The Cancer Society will provide a small start-up pack of Daffodil Day-themed items but they encourage each business or organisation to add their flair. “Decorate their workplaces, dress their staff, colour their windows, all to celebrate and raise awareness of the 30 th anniversary of Daffodil Day,” Claridge said. They have a characteristic square-ended abdomen and long front legs. They are not web-builders and instead use their front legs to grab prey before delivering a bite. Sidymella angulata found in my garden is one of at least four endemic species found in New Zealand. This species is about 4-8mm in length and is quite variable in colour, ranging from cream to red-brown, to blend with surroundings. Even if they don’t make webs, they still use a dragline as they move around. If disturbed, they drop to the ground staying motionless with their legs wrapped around their SELWYN TIMES bodies until it is safe to move again. THis species is common throughout much of New Zealand. Males are much smaller than females. Soon after mating the female crawls under a dead leaf and lays down a sheet of silk. She then deposits an egg mass and covers it with more silk. The mother guards the egg sac for the early stages of incubation. THere are also two Australian species here and both are likely to have dispersed naturally to New Zealand by ballooning (floating on strands of webs). Sidymella longipes is particularly long-legged and is found in the northern North Island and Sidymella trapezia is known from Christchurch northwards.
