male participation in leadership
YOUNG MEN in the district
will get the chance to meet
double-amputee mountaineer
Mark Inglis in a bid to improve
their confidence.
The Building Awesome Young
Men initiative was started by
Lincoln High School and offers
a series of events throughout the
year which young men can take
part in.
Other schools across the district
are participating, which includes
Lincoln Primary, Ararira
Springs, Prebbleton, Ladbrooks
and Springston schools.
One of the events planned for
the initiative is the Big Breakfast
with Mark Inglis on August 17.
It is a chance for young men
and their families to have a
cooked breakfast and listen to
guest Inglis, the only double
amputee to climb Everest, talk
about his life.
Teacher Kerri Loughhead said
they came up with the idea by
basing it off something similar
being done at a school in the
North Island.
“Kylie Horgan and I went and
Building Awesome Young Men initiative last week.
met with Rangiora High School
about their leadership structure.
We bounced ideas about how we
can get more males involved.
“We were told there is a school
up north who is doing something
similar to this initiative so
we went and designed it to how
we thought it would work best
for our students.”
Loughhead said they are seeing
a decline in male participation
in leadership roles at the
school.
“They are still wanting to be
leaders but it depends where
they are leaders. We still have
students who aren’t necessarily
interested in the positions we
want to see them putting their
hand up for.
“They are still leaders in their
own sports and things like that
but we are just trying to show
them they can be confident
doing that within our school
environment as well.”
She said they are struggling to
get as many year 7 and 8 students
involved as they would like and
encourage anyone who would like
to participate to come forward.
A range of other events are
planned this year under the
initiative including the Dress for
Success event.
Two young men will win a
day with comedian Leigh Hart
where they will be fitted into a
suit sponsored by Sergios, then
visit Shaka Bros for some lunch
and then to Benny’s Barber shop
where the owner, Ben Scott, will
give them tips and tricks on how
to present themselves.
Deputy head student Ben
Hooper said: “The building awesome
young men campaign has
been introduced to bring more
opportunities and leadership
experiences to the young men in
our community.”
He said they are grateful to
have support from The Laboratory,
CrossFit Selwyn, Benny’s
Barber Shop, The HIIT Squad,
Learn to Surf, O-Studio, Lincoln
New World, Lincoln Motels,
Sergio’s, Triumph & Disaster,
Christchurch Adventure Park,
Phoric and Bacon Brothers.
