Henrietta Maria <strong>and</strong> Charles were "dedicated <strong>and</strong> knowledgeable collectors" of paintings, including Orazio<br />

Gentileschi<strong>and</strong> the miniature painters Jean Petitot <strong>and</strong> Jacques Bourdier.<br />

During his 1631 Northwest Passage expedition in the ship Henrietta Maria, Captain Thomas James named the north<br />

west headl<strong>and</strong> of James Bay where it opens into Hudson Bay for her. <strong>The</strong> US state of Maryl<strong>and</strong> was named in her<br />

honour <strong>by</strong> her husb<strong>and</strong>, Charles I.<br />
