Satan is discovered <strong>and</strong> surpizd in his own shape sure<br />

At touch of Ituriel’s spear, for no falsehood can endure<br />

Touch of celestial temper. Satan started up in<br />

Aire inflamed with high anger, as with sudden blaze<br />

Nitrous powder sparks. Yet thus unmovd the Grisley King.<br />

“In waite which of those rebel angels com’st escaped<br />

Such Is now watching at head of these that sleep?”<br />

“Do you not know mee then?” said Satan with scorn,<br />

“In vain should I explain. Asking mee argues your<br />

Selves unknown, the lowest of your throng.”<br />

Proud fiend went hautie on, his lustre impaired, yet<br />

Abashed the devil stood overcome with rage<br />

To strive or flie in vain, thought he, thus chaumping his iron<br />

Curb, as appeered on high great scales that weighed the issue.<br />

He, Gabriel spying thus bespake, <strong>and</strong> on Satan’s crest sat horror:<br />

“Ev’n read thy lot <strong>by</strong> scale aloft we read thy lot <strong>and</strong> are<br />

Doubled now to trample thee.” Satan fled murmuring.<br />
