Sees he Eve, <strong>and</strong> doth the sly<br />

Enemie of mankind glide forward,<br />

Rising <strong>and</strong> falling foulds on his reare.<br />

Prone on the ground slides he toward<br />

Eve, addresses he his way near.<br />

Neck of verdant gold <strong>and</strong> carbuncle eyes<br />

Thus pleasing was his shape.<br />

Beguilng, he bowed his crest <strong>and</strong> begot<br />

Eye of eve to mark his play <strong>and</strong> with<br />

Gentle dumb expression turned now<br />

Unto him the thoughts of Eve <strong>and</strong> with<br />

Impulse of vocal air his tongue organic<br />

Licked the ground whereon she stood.<br />

Eve not unamazed: “what may this mean<br />

Serpent with toungue of man it seems<br />

And human sense expressed?”<br />

Now the serpent praised that Tree of<br />

Death to tempt the mind of Eve.<br />
