He it was, <strong>The</strong> Infernal Serpent, whose guile, <strong>and</strong> scheme,<br />
Ev’n in rage rebelled ‘gainst the power supreme.<br />
Favour'd of Heav'n once so highly, through & abroad<br />
Ethereal Skies hurled he <strong>by</strong> h<strong>and</strong> of God,<br />
Long flaming nine times the span of night <strong>and</strong> day,<br />
Lastly to the lake of burning fire…<strong>and</strong> thir he lay.<br />
Withall, his Glory now extinct in endless woe,<br />
Infinite mind <strong>and</strong> spirit was dealt a mighty blow.<br />
Though immortal, now vanquish’t, in the fiery lake,<br />
Hell within him, he his crime would not foresake.<br />
He with the mightiest enlisted heav’ns admiring,<br />
Obedient Rebel Angels, <strong>by</strong> whose aid aspiring,<br />
Rais'd impious War in Heav'n <strong>and</strong> Battel proud. Now<br />
Regions of sorrow, darkness visible, a dismal shroud!<br />
Obdurate pride, his great sin, took him to this path<br />
Reserved him in this dark prison only to more wrath.<br />
At once as far as angels kenn he views the waste <strong>and</strong> wilde.<br />
No light, but rather darkness visible, burning unconsum'd,<br />
Dungeon horrible on all sides round, the fires plumed.<br />
Satan now rose with steadfast hate, bound in<br />
Adamantine Chains <strong>and</strong> penal Fire, his fate,<br />
Who durst defie th' omnipotent to arms.<br />
