Cask is king
Cask Ale Week is coming soon (24th
September – Sunday 4th October)
and what better way to celebrate
our national drink? With pubs across
the UK closing for the duration of
lockdown, fresh cask beer is tasting
better than ever before.
Megan Hocking from our communications
team spoke to Georgina Young, our brewing
director, to find out more about what makes
cask so special, the launch of seasonal cask
beer Harlequin – just in time for Cask Ale
Week – as well the ingredients we use to
brew our core range.
When it comes to cask beer, quality raw
ingredients are essential. What is it
that makes Maris Otter barley so great
for brewing?
We purchase more Maris Otter barley
than any other brewer in the world. It’s a
heritage variety that produces a rich, malty
flavour and brilliant beer clarity. We’re
very proud of the relationships that we’ve
formed with our trusted community of
Cornish farmers over the years.
In total, approximately 900 acres of
Cornish farmland has been cultivated
to grow this year’s crop of Maris Otter
– currently being harvested - which has
produced 700 tonnes of barley.
What does the water quality and
Cornwall and Bath mean for the
outcome of cask beer?
Beer contains about 90% water, so its
importance to cask quality and its overall
taste cannot be over-estimated.
