Editor-in-Chief,
IFA International
Beam me up… to IFA
IFA this year is a bit like riding on the Starship
Enterprise… “boldly going where no man
has gone before”. Indeed, the move by IFA’s
organisers to go ahead with this new kind
of “hybrid” show is yet again proof of the
bold and innovative nature of the show’s
management.
For this edition, the organisers have three key
intentions. The first is to show how innovative
the participating industries are – even in
these times – as the innovation certainly
didn’t stop during the pandemic. The second
intention is to inform retailers about what’s
new in the industry… what’s worth ordering –
to get prepared for the most important retail
season of the year. Numerous governments
are creating incentives, offering chances for
retail to be more successful than the previous
years; but they have to be informed. IFA 2020
is their sole “real” opportunity to get the facts.
Even if a retailer can’t attend, they can follow
the presentations live and discover the USPs
and other advantages of the new products
on stage. The third aim of the organiser is to
create a huge impact for the consumers –
informing them that there ARE new products,
there ARE innovations, and that there is a
“buzz” for them to be interested in the new
products. For this reason, for the first time, IFA
is opening all press conferences to everyone
online: press, trade and the general public.
It’s a new format… it’s a new concept… but
the aim is the same – to be the beating heart
of the industry at the most important selling
time of the year.
Welcome… to a very special edition of IFA

Welcome to the (new) real world
We are opening IFA today
with a keynote from
Qualcomm… and this is for
a very good reason. We have
seen, during these pandemic
times, how important the
digital industry can be. We
often talk about the relevance
of Teams or other conference
software, we are talking
about online retail and so
many other things. But we
forget about the importance
of the components industry,
and how relevant it is as a
backbone – making all this
possible. I am really happy
that with Qualcomm’s
President, Cristiano Amon,
we have one of the leading innovators in this field,
helping bring the world together. I am really curious
what new technology he will be showing us on stage,
and hearing about the most recent experiences.

IFA, with IFA NEXT and SHIFT
Mobility, you will learn all about
the “new mobility”. When we
talked about new mobility ideas
in the recent past, we saw some
“funky” solutions. But in this time
of pandemic, we have come to the
realisation that there are many
challenges to be solved that are
much more important than just
having a toy. For this, we are
bringing people together on the
stage, for SHIFT Mobility, not
only from the car manufacturing
side, but also from the digital
side, along with thought leaders
who are looking at alternatives to
current modes of transport. They
will be discussing what really matters for the future,

We are convinced that the richness of the content
at this year’s IFA Special Edition will be an essential
element in helping the industry weather the storm and

Meet the new WT1 models
Revealed at IFA: New washer-dryers from Miele are faster and
more convenient than ever before
Fans of washer-dryers don’t just
value their multi-talented appliances
because of the space they save – they
also appreciate the convenience and
the time-savings, such as the fact that
there’s no need to reload and start a
different appliance once the wash
cycle has finished. But Miele's new WT1
generation takes it one step further.
Depending on the model, up to nine kilograms
of laundry can be washed and six kilograms
can be washed and dried in one go – ideal for
families and anywhere handling large volumes
of laundry.
WASH AND DRY INDIVIDUAL ITEMS
IN UNDER AN HOUR
Miele has introduced a new function that enables
individual items to be washed and dried efficiently.
If consumers want to wear their favourite items of
clothing again without having to wait ages, here
too, Miele offers a quick and convenient solution:
depending on the programme, the new "Single
Wash&Dry" option allows even individual items
of laundry to be washed and dried quickly and in
an environmentally friendly manner. Combined
with the “Shirts”, “Delicates” or “Minimum iron”
programmes, the garment is ready to wear again
in less than an hour – and there’s no need to wait
until one has a pile of laundry or to feel guilty
about the environmental impact.
SMART AIDS FOR OPTIMUM TIME
AND HYGIENE MANAGEMENT
To find out when the garment is done, the user
can simply take a look at the Miele app. Or for
even more convenience, they can simply ask
Amazon Alexa. All new washer-dryers are now
network-enabled as a standard feature. Further
smart highlights are already available or will
follow this year:
Even after the programme has started, AddLoad
allows items to be placed in the washer-dryer
or taken out again right up to the end of the
wash process, simply by using the regular
door. AddLoad can be controlled either at the
appliance or via the Miele app.
The CareAssistant enables the Anti-crease
settings to be extended – a useful feature if one
is delayed getting home and cannot empty the
machine straight away. Instead of running the
standard settings of 30 minutes for washing
or 150 minutes for drying, Anti-crease can be
set in 30-minute intervals up to a maximum of
240 minutes instead. With crease protection,
the drum continues to move in a certain rhythm
after completion of the actual programme to
prevent creasing.
If the programme is taking much longer than
initially announced, the TimeAssistant passes
this information on to the user. Particularly when
drying, the actual running time is often difficult
to predict.
The HygieneAssistant notifies the user when
machine cleaning is recommended. If they
wish, users can start the cleaning programme
straight away directly from the app. In addition,
the hygiene status can be called up in the app
at any time.
Naturally, the new models also come equipped
with proven features such as the quick and
eco-friendly PowerWash technique along with
the QuickPower Wash&Dry programme, which
enables four kilograms of laundry to be washed
and dried in under three hours. Similarly, there is
also the unique TwinDos automatic dispensing
function which uses up to 30% less detergent than
manual dispensing. Sales are due to commence
in certain countries from October

Smart speakers continue
to capture the hearts and
wallets of consumers, driving
demand for wireless speakers
and establishing a wider
acceptance of voice assistants.
According to Jack Wetherill,
Principal Analyst: Home Electronics,
Futuresource Consulting, by the end
of 2019, 21 million smart speakers
were in use in Western European
homes, on track to exceed 32 million
by the end of this year according to
Futuresource forecasts.
Although a broad range of brands
compete for attention, Google and
Amazon branded speakers still
account for almost 80% of the smart
speaker market in Europe. This is
mainly due to product subsidy
strategies from the market leaders,
which are geared towards getting
the products in homes and learning
about consumer activities, lifestyle
choices and shopping habits. In Q1
2020, Google and Amazon offerings
were retailing at an ASP of €52,
compared with €213 from the likes
of Apple, JBL, Sonos and Sony.
Recent consumer research carried
out by Futuresource reveals that
70% of smart speaker owners
mainly use their devices to listen to
music, and 58% say they would like
better sound quality. It is unclear
whether this will translate into an
uptick in spend, but all eyes will be
on IFA to see what innovations will
be unveiled this year

Global Fairs TT-Messe:
Sustainability is
more important
than ever
Jan
Nintemann
Global Fairs TT-Messe
This year's IFA is very different for everyone, none the least for regular
IFA partners, Global Fairs TT-Messe, organisers of the annual "Reseller
Park" and sustainability conference. We asked Managing Director, Jan
Nintemann, what he's doing that's different.
Due to the Coronavirus regulations, an
event with crowds - otherwise a guarantee
for a successful trade fair - is not possible
at this IFA 2020 special edition. I therefore
find it extremely commendable and worthy
of imitation that Messe Berlin, together with
gfu, is doing real pioneering work here.
"Coronavirus fairs" will probably be around
for a whole year or until a vaccine is finally
available, but in economic terms, we cannot
afford to completely do without physical
marketplaces, which represent the platform
and the decisive impulses for our future
business or our business and actions for
such a long time.
The pandemic is changing the world so
rapidly that we should and must use the
time now to face the challenges and issues
of the post-corona period and prepare for
them. So we tried to bring the contentrelated
aspects of economy and society
and the resulting influence to the fore by
implementing a continuation of the "Studio
Sustainability Conference on the sidelines
of the IFA", so to speak, as a 2nd edition.
In turn, it is about climate change and the
resulting requirements in the tech industries
- a necessity that applies to all industries.
Under the motto: "Sustainability through
digitisation", we are contrasting climate
change with digital topics that are, to a certain
extent, suitable for reducing CO2 emissions
- using SmartHome, SmartBuilding and
SmartCity. This is because the world of
buildings leaves an even bigger CO2 print
than the entire world of cars, where a lot has
changed in the past 5 years. At this special
IFA we are therefore realising the conference
alongside a thematically coordinated small
exhibition area in the entrance area of the

I EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW I
Cristiano Amon
President, Qualcomm
at IFA Keynote 2019
Another year,
but not JUST another keynote
Qualcomm's IFA 2020 presentation highlights the role of
technology in a Covid-19 world
Qualcomm President Cristiano Amon is again addressing an
IFA keynote this year. But much has happened since the last
edition. We asked him to give us a foretaste of what we’ll see
this time.
We want to emphasise the key role
technology and innovation play in
our lives today – especially during
these unprecedented times. In just a
few months, everyone has come to
see the importance of connectivity
in their daily lives, and in doing so
validated many of the future use
cases of 5G and other emerging
technologies. Mobile technologies,
led by 5G and AI, are powering new
devices, delivering more immersive
experiences and connecting
everything to the cloud. Combined,
this will enable new capabilities
that will drive growth and make
for a more resilient economy and
society. Qualcomm is proud to be
working with the broader ecosystem
as it answers this important call to
innovate to address current needs
and future opportunities.
Just where are we up to with the rollout
of 5G?
Since 5G launched last year, there
are 80 commercial 5G networks in 40
countries around the globe, with over
300 more investing in the technology.
Millions of people are already using
5G phones. We expect more than
1 billion 5G connections by 2023 –
reaching that milestone two years
faster than 4G.
There are hundreds of products
launched or in development using our
technology based on Qualcomm’s
portfolio of 5G solutions.
5G is also gaining momentum beyond
smartphones. It’s rapidly expanding
worldwide and permeating new
segments and industries, such as
the PC and enterprise, healthcare,
factories and more.
What are you personally most
excited about when it comes to 5G?
I am excited that Qualcomm is
helping deliver the technologies
driving the future of the internet.
The opportunity will be significant
for nearly every sector once 5G is
broadly deployed. According to the
updated 5G economy report from
IHS Markit, advancements
in the enterprise, extended
reality (XR), artificial
intelligence (AI), the Industrial
Internet of things (IIoT), and more are
on the horizon. The innovations 5G
enables in these fields will not only
enrich our lives, but also significantly
MANY PEOPLE

boost our global economy. IHS
Markit estimates that 5G will enable
US$13.2tn (€11.09tn) in global sales
enablement by 2035. Additionally,
the global 5G value chain is expected
to generate US$3.6tn (€3.02tn) in
economic output by 2035, while
supporting 22.3 million jobs.
I’m also excited about the possibilities
that 5G opens up, particularly in the
areas of entertainment – I will be
making a very exciting announcement
during my speech at IFA.
The deployment of mmWave for
mobile broadband is another exciting
development. Many people told us it
would not be possible to use mmWave
for mobile. We proved them wrong.
We’re talking about spectrum bands
above 24 GHz. Spectrum is abundant
at these high frequencies and can
support extreme data speeds and
capacity that will reshape the mobile
experience. These bands are highly
complex, but Qualcomm solved
those problems and right now, 120
operators are working on rolling
out mmWave to deliver amazing
new experiences. 5G really has the
potential to positively affect all of
us, across the full cross-section of
society

and beyond, and hope to embody the
company’s exciting vision for how
people’s lives are going to transform
for the better in the future.
Today you will unveil your response to
the “new normal.” Can you give us a
taste of what’s to come?
The new normal presents a new set
of circumstances under which LG’s
innovations can facilitate real change
for consumers all over the world.
Lockdown has amplified the importance
and function of the home, while social
distancing has us finding new ways to
connect with each other. To meet such
challenges, LG’s mission as a lifestyle
innovator resonates stronger than ever
before, and we hope to shine a light
on how LG’s innovative products and
technology work seamlessly together
to deliver the best experiences to date
while contributing to comfort and
sustainability.
What “qualities” is LG underlining with
its latest innovations?
SAFETY always comes first, which is
why we are committed to providing
solutions that ensure safer living, like
our LG Styler’s True Steam technology
and advanced healthcare technologies
employing AI. CONVENIENCE
comes next, and with our advanced
technologies growing smarter and
more multifunctional by the day, LG’s
devices and appliances more than meet
the needs of today’s consumer. We also
focus on the growingly influential digital
transformation, and look to leverage
this by providing remote solutions
from fashion to healthcare for greater
accessibility and ease. Finally, our
technologies offer immersive sound
and picture quality that maximise
ENTERTAINMENT wherever you may
be. We will convey our key consumer
values through advanced technologies
both for inside and outside the home,
solutions that serve consumers in new
ways that adapt to the new normal.
What are LG’s main strengths?
Our strengths not only lie within
our consumer appliance expertise,
but within our unparalleled drive for
innovation too. By continuing our
research on human-centric designs,
AI, and the new ways tech can better
lives, we hope to deliver integrated
intelligent platforms for seamless user

holistic approach for never-beforeseen
intelligent living.
The rapidly growing Smart home
and AI product markets are thriving,
and we understand LG’s ThinQ app
will become a key component of
the brand; can you elaborate?
The ThinQ app is an integrated
platform providing users with
enhanced connections to all their
smart LG products and services.
It makes achieving tasks with
maximum efficiency and minimal
worries and hassle possible,
and acts as the interface of our
intelligent platform that expands
across the entirety of LG’s value
system. Ultimately, the app builds
an evolving, connected and open
ecosystem of smart products and
services that enhances the user’s
daily life.

What are your thoughts on IFA’s
decision to hold a “real” show this
year (albeit limited in scale)?
With many global events cancelled,
postponed or made onlineexclusive,
IFA has managed to
create a fantastic platform for
consumer electronics companies
to showcase their latest
innovations amid a rising need for
hands-on experiences and human
connections. We’re extremely
confident IFA will create a safe
environment without sacrificing
too much immersion, and are truly
thankful for all their efforts. We hope
to deliver an equally immersive and
innovative experience with our own

I EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW I
Major new offerings
from Haier Group
Built-in, premium, intuitive… and increasingly
digital – a whole lot to discover at IFA
The Haier Group is present at this year’s IFA with a number
of big product announcements. We asked European CEO
Yannick Fierling what’s at the heart of their offering.
IFA is a unique opportunity for
Haier to present the best of our
cutting-edge technologies and
innovation. This is even truer given
the unprecedented times we’ve all
been living in. We’ve never stopped
designing and creating to delight
our consumers with our products
and brands, with absolute previews
being showcased here in Berlin.
The launch of an entirely new builtin
offer for Haier with a series of
new features for the refrigeration
and wine coolers range, is aimed
to bring the brand’s premiumness,
high quality and sophisticated
design to the kitchen, with artificial
intelligence at the core of this
proposition.

with smart functions and a typical
Italian style.
As per Hoover, we are pleased
to introduce here at IFA the first
“3in1” well-being ecosystem,
interconnected into Hoover ranges
and designed for a healthier home
living.
What about the integration of Haier
and Candy?
After 18 months, the process is
almost complete and it is already
bringing important results, as we’re
the fastest growing company in
Europe. Undoubtedly, the integration
has been a great success with the
deployment of the multi-brand
strategy, the setup of a cross-selling
process and the focus on IOT and
connectivity to empower user
experience. In this regard, we’re
happy to launch here hOn, a single
and centralised digital platform able
to control and manage appliances
of all our brands. Several challenges
and opportunities are still ahead
of us and we’re confident we have
the right people and culture to
address them: the entrepreneurial
spirit which is at the core of the
company’s culture allows us to
be close to the markets, business
partners and consumers, pursuing
Haier’s goal of “Zero Distance with
the Consumer” and our vision to
become first consumer choice in
smart home in Europe and among
the top 3 leaders by 2023.
How is the “Haier Smart Home”
project evolving?
We are proceeding at a fast pace
in the implementation of this
project, that represents one of the
fundamental pillars of our strategy.
HAIER OPENS
“AI-POWERED”
FACTORY IN
QINGDAO
Last year, jointly with China
Mobile and Huawei, Haier
inaugurated the first AI+5G
interconnection factory
in Qingdao, to seize the
opportunity for creating a
world-class Internet ecological
brand.
The company also opened
in Russia the first real-time
manufacturing facility aiming
to produce tailor-made laundry
appliances connecting the
customer with the factory
throughout the whole
manufacturing process.
The model leverages IoT and
AI applications, generating
efficiency, manufacturing
savings and granting a
sustainable competitive
advantage.
The same approach is being
adopted to our upcoming
new factories in Turkey
and Romania, which will be
manufacturing respectively
dryers and refrigerators
“Haier Smart Home” reflects not
only our company and brand
positioning but, most importantly,
our philosophy: it’s about a change
in paradigm, from a product, a
concept to a seamless scenario
experience. We’ve transformed
from a traditional manufacturing
company into a co-creation and
win-win IoT community ecosystem.
What are your thoughts about
IFA’s decision to create a “real”
show this year, despite all the
difficulties involved?
We appreciate the efforts by the
organisation to pull together all
relevant stakeholders despite
the unprecedented times and
unfavourable conditions. This really
gives a sense of optimism and
forward-looking spirit, which is at the
core of our industry and business.
We’re glad to be here and support
this year’s edition of IFA which will
definitely be memorable!

Brechts Steakhouse -
The special "meat treat" on the Spree
"... to be put in the pit without having
enjoyed a mouthful of good meat is
inhuman ...", wrote Bertolt Brecht and,
as the namesake, laid the foundation
stone for the philosophy of the
Brechts Steakhaus restaurant on
Schiffbauerdamm. While the interior in
the modern restaurant on the banks of
the Spree tends to focus on restraint -
brasserie style with clear lines, cosy light
in a pleasant atmosphere - the dishes
show what the focus is on: the best in
gourmet meat. Chef Christoph Ganzert
ensures the ultimate in gastronomic
enjoyment, with his knowledge,
standards, craft and his culinary art
keeping the level of the Brechts Steakhaus
well above the standards of the others.
The restaurant has 100 indoor and 100

RESTAURANT
The Entrecôte
The Entrecôte is a restaurant and
brasserie right in the heart of Berlin,
reflecting the spirit of Paris. While the “brasserie lifestyle spirit” can normally
only be found in Paris, loved by many poets, writers and artists, The Entrecôte
has brought this esprit to life in Berlin.
You will find in their great offer of typically French cuisine, dishes such as
saumon fumé, escargots, foie gras, huitres fines de Claire. Entrecôte has
maintained its independence, and has not copied the interiors of its Parisian
cousins. There is no fake Art Deco here, the visitor is perfectly aware of being in
Berlin. The modern and elegant but very comfortable interior is a priority of the
management. This does not in the least impair the lifestyle, quite the opposite.
This is what makes the Entrecôte so real.

From Burgundy to the Mediterranean:
French specialties in the Ganymed
Brasserie
The Ganymed Brasserie could easily assert itself on La Croisette in Cannes or on the
streets of Paris.
Fortunately, this charming restaurant is located directly on the Spree here in Berlin:
on Schiffbauerdamm, diners can enjoy classics such as Bœuf Bourguignon, Coq au
vin and Steak Frites in a French ambience. Or what about a fine crustacean étagère
or oysters "Fine de Claire" to relive memories of the last Mediterranean vacation... or
the tartare, which is freshly prepared at one's table.
The Ganymed Brasserie is a meeting point for celebrities from politics, society and
culture, but also for Berliners and tourists who value fine quality food and drink.
NEWS: In spring 2020, owner Michael Pankow, in collaboration with four other
restaurateurs, completed Berlin's largest summer terrace on Schiffbauerdamm,
making the location by the water a must-see.
Open daily from Mid-day to 2:30pm
and from 5pm to 10pm.
