Everyone was silent. These were good
questions to which they had no answers.
Courtney had an idea. “There’s a
demonstration plot of tobacco growing nearby,” she
said. “John Rolfe was the first colonist to try
growing tobacco in the colony.”
“You mean the John Rolfe that Pocahontas
married?” asked Christina.
“Yes,” said Courtney. “But planting and
harvesting the crop took lots more workers than
they had in the colony, so they began to bring black
boys and men from Africa—against their will—to
work the fields.”
“You mean they kidnapped them and made
them slaves?” asked Grant.
“Sadly true,” said Courtney.
They all stood there thinking about this for a
moment, then Alex said, “Well, let’s at least go look
at the tobacco crop and see if it has anything to do
with this curious clue.”
