“By the time the <strong>Jamestown</strong> colonists got<br />
here, the local Powhatan Indians had a wellestablished<br />
chiefdom,” Courtney continued, as they<br />
hurried to the village. “Almost immediately, there<br />
were problems between the natives and the<br />
newcomers. For one thing, the English couldn’t<br />
speak Algonquian, the Indian’s language.”<br />
“Come on, we’ll show you!” said Alex, eager<br />
to visit the village before it closed up for the night.<br />
As they entered the replica village, many of<br />
the last re-creations of various activities by the<br />
costumed interpreters were underway. The kids<br />
explored the reed-covered houses, watched Indian<br />
women grind corn, and saw Powhatan children play<br />
a game of corncob darts.<br />
In another area, the Indians tanned animal hides,<br />
made tools and pottery, and wove natural fibers into<br />
