Inside, Grant and Christina were surprised<br />

by two things. One was that the building housed an<br />

actual archaeological dig “in progress.” And the<br />

other was that Joe was down on hands and knees<br />

busy examining an artifact in the dirt.<br />

“Hey, Joe!” cried Grant, as if they were old<br />

friends. “We found you! What have you found?”<br />

Joe looked up and grinned. With a grimace,<br />

he stood up and brushed dirt off his knees. He<br />

walked over to where the children stood above the<br />

dig. “Hi, you guys!” he said. “Hi, son,” he added<br />

with a nod to Alex.<br />

“Hey!” said Grant. “He called you his son!”<br />

Alex giggled. “Well, why not—he’s my dad.”<br />

“Your dad’s this archaeologist?” Grant<br />

marveled. “I didn’t know.”<br />

“Sorry, Grant,” Joe said. “I guess I forgot<br />

to tell you about my son Alex on the ride up to<br />

<strong>Jamestown</strong> in the Jeep.”<br />

“No wonder you know so much about this<br />

place,” Christina said, impressed. Alex blushed.<br />

“We both hang around here a lot,”<br />

Courtney explained. “In case you didn’t figure it<br />

out, Amy’s my big sister.”<br />

“Wow!” said Grant. “Our family affair meets<br />

your family affair—cool.”<br />
