Inside, Grant and Christina were surprised
by two things. One was that the building housed an
actual archaeological dig “in progress.” And the
other was that Joe was down on hands and knees
busy examining an artifact in the dirt.
“Hey, Joe!” cried Grant, as if they were old
friends. “We found you! What have you found?”
Joe looked up and grinned. With a grimace,
he stood up and brushed dirt off his knees. He
walked over to where the children stood above the
dig. “Hi, you guys!” he said. “Hi, son,” he added
with a nod to Alex.
“Hey!” said Grant. “He called you his son!”
Alex giggled. “Well, why not—he’s my dad.”
“Your dad’s this archaeologist?” Grant
marveled. “I didn’t know.”
“Sorry, Grant,” Joe said. “I guess I forgot
to tell you about my son Alex on the ride up to
Jamestown in the Jeep.”
“No wonder you know so much about this
place,” Christina said, impressed. Alex blushed.
“We both hang around here a lot,”
Courtney explained. “In case you didn’t figure it
out, Amy’s my big sister.”
“Wow!” said Grant. “Our family affair meets
your family affair—cool.”
