“Ok!” the kids said eagerly. They were happy
to help and they wanted to get out of there so they
could talk about this terrible situation.
Grant took the package and shook it a little.
It rattled just slightly.
“Hey, be careful with that!” Joe warned.
“Ok,” Grant promised. “What’s in here?”
Without thinking, Joe said, “Bones.” When
he saw how the kids looked at him—especially his
son, Alex—he just shook his head. “I’m sending
them to a lab for tests. Go on and get out of here,”
he said. “I have work to do.”
The kids headed for the mail station. They
walked glumly down the path, now paying little
attention to the tourists or the beautiful late
afternoon sunshine and shadows.
“I’m sure your dad didn’t do anything bad,”
Christina said to Alex. “Don’t worry, we’ll help get
to the bottom of this.”
Courtney and Grant nodded in agreement,
but Alex just kicked his feet in the dirt and stared at
the ground as they walked. Christina figured he was
trying to make sense of this new bad news.
“Look,” Christina said, still trying to cheer
everyone up. “Papa gave me twenty dollars. Let’s get
this mail delivered and I’ll treat everyone to ice cream.”
