how sheep were shorn of their wooly coats.<br />

Costumed kids used sticks to push wooden hoops<br />

down the lanes.<br />

They ate lunch at Christiana Campbell’s<br />

Tavern. Papa loved the old-timey tavern<br />

atmosphere. Mimi admired the pewter place<br />

settings. Grant ordered pea soup and Christina<br />

ordered Virginia ham and biscuits. Papa ordered<br />

calves’ tongue! Mimi ordered vegetables, but she<br />

was looking eagerly at the dessert tray filled with<br />

puddings, cakes, pies, and tarts.<br />

Their waitress wore a long full skirt and<br />

apron, and gathered white cap. Some men in the<br />

tavern wore fancy breeches, silk waistcoats, and<br />

powdered wigs!<br />

After lunch, they shopped for souvenirs.<br />

Grant and Papa bought matching tricorn hats. Mimi<br />

bought sweet-smelling potpourri, and Christina<br />

bought a cornshuck doll.<br />

As the afternoon wore on, Christina began to<br />

get worried. She wondered what was going on back<br />
