Food, art and music enthusiasts flocked to West Broad Street
on Sept. 12 for a summer event series known as Art Brunch.
Hosted by the local gallery, 3060 Artworks, and in partnership
with surrounding businesses, the morning and afternoon
gathering was established to allow enthusiasts the chance to
get out of the house and explore the variety of talents from
artists throughout the region. Owner Kelly Reichert said that
while the summer series is set to end on Oct. 10, the gallery
will still host an artist reception on the first Saturday of the
month (the hours are 6 to 9 p.m.) and will still be open for visitors
on Fridays 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Saturdays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.;
and Sundays 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. For current artist information on
Prairie Township Community Center
Director Michael Pollack said there will be
some changes this fall.
“We have updated the hours to reflect
the hours we are seeing the most members
come in,” Pollack said at a recent board of
trustees meeting. “This will align with our
usage pattern and will make the most
sense from an operations perspective.”
The revised hours will be from 7 a.m. to
8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m.
alcohol ink more than two years ago and enjoys working with
the medium despite its propensity to look like a “hot mess” initially.
“It can start out looking like a hot mess,” she said, “but
by the end you can get some truly wonderful pieces out of it.”
In addition to her demonstration on Sept. 12, several of her
acrylic and mixed medium pieces are on display at the gallery.
Trustees discuss crime, snow and more in Prairie Township
By Amanda Ensinger
Staff Writer
At a recent Prairie Township meeting,
the trustees discussed an increase in criminal
activity.
According to Prairie Township
Administrator Rob Peters, there has been a
spike in theft from both retail stores and
private residences.
“Recently there were 592 calls for service
and several of those included breaking
and entering, aggravated robbery and theft
of a motor vehicle,” Peters said. “All residents
are encouraged to make sure that
their vehicles are secure, park in well-lit
areas if possible and not leave valuables in
their vehicles.”
The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office
patrols the township and officials hope to
see criminal activity decline as the weather
turns cooler.
With the colder months approaching,
the board also discussed snow and ice
removal plans with the city of Columbus.
This annual agreement is a partnership
with the city for the township to remove
snow and ice on Columbus streets that are
within the township.
“In exchange for the township maintaining,
during snow and ice events, 11.58 lane
miles of road, the city of Columbus will
compensate the township $953 per lane
mile for a total of $11,035,” Peters said.
“The township maintained these same
roads last year. As in the past, township
roads will have priority.”
Peters said that partnerships like this
ensure township residents are protected
when they drive from township to
Columbus roads.
to 5 p.m. on Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and
12 to 6 p.m. on Sunday.
Pollack said with the pool and other activities continuing
to not be offered, the center is seeing attendance
lower on Friday and Saturday, so keeping the
center open extended hours didn’t make sense.
Pollack added that the community center pool will
stay closed.
“We are continuing to evaluate the COVID-19
trends and see what impact schools and colleges being
reopened are having on the public health emergency,”
Pollack said. “We also are looking at what other communities
are doing who have indoor pools and seeing
what makes the most sense to do.”
The township wants to see if the virus infection
numbers in Franklin County will increase, as they did
in July, or go down before they decide when the pool
will reopen.
“We want to make sure there isn’t another surge
before we make any decisions,” he said. “We haven’t
forgotten about the pool, but we need to see what our
capacity can safely be before we reopen it.”
Pollack said the pool can safely allow a small number
of people to swim at once, so it financially doesn’t
make sense for the township to reopen it until it can be
used by more people at the same time.
Once the pool is open, officials want to keep it open
because the expenses of filling it and continuing to
maintain it are costly.
“We can’t say we are going to reopen it on a specific
date right now,” Pollack said. “We don’t have a
www.columbusmessenger.com
In other news, as township employees
return to the office, the board discussed the
need for further COVID-19 safeguards to
protect employees. The township will
install hands-free electrical and plumbing
devices at some township facilities.
“It includes COVID-19 guards at 25
Maple Drive for protection of workers and
residents while interacting with the staff,”
Peters said. “The work would also involve
extending a glass opening for resident service
at entryway at 23 Maple Drive.”
The cost for this work is approximately
$47,500. The work will be paid for from the
CARES Funds that the township has
received for COVID-19 related expenses.
CML helps county promote voter registration
Columbus Metropolitan Library (CML) has partnered with the
Franklin County Board of Elections to promote voter registration
and participation in the upcoming General
Election on Nov. 3.
In addition to sharing the board of elections
messaging in marketing channels,
CML offers voter registration information
and resources online and at all 23 of its
to provide voter registration assistance
using CML public computers. The voter
registration deadline for the upcoming
General Election is Oct. 5.
Five locations will close for library services
timetable on this and need to see how things progress
in the county first. We want to reopen the pool and
have not forgotten about it; we just aren’t there yet.”
As a result of the pool being closed, annual events
like the Pumpkin Swim will not be taking place this
year. The township also will not be doing its annual
Halloween Trail event.
However, the center has reopened its childcare
room for members.
“While childcare is now open, we have limitation on
capacity and have made significant changes to the
guidelines,” Pollack said. “Previously, children 6
months of age and up could come to the room, now only
children 3-9 years old can be in the room.”
Pollack said the reason for this is the added risk
with children that are so young, as well as staff ratio
needed when infants are in the room.
Pollack said once the childcare room is open for a
while, officials will revaluate.
“We like to start with the strictest guidelines and
then slowly ease up,” he said. “It is easier to loosen up
restrictions than tighten them up later.”
Members who want to utilize the Prairiedise
Childcare Room can either purchase a full membership
that includes childcare for an additional $20 a month,
pay $2.50 an hour per child and a $1 an hour per additional
child or purchase a 10-hour discount card for
$22.50 or a 50-hour discount card for $100.
Children are limited to one hour maximum in the
childcare room each time they visit.

Gun violence is on the rise in Columbus
and city officials want to put a stop to the
dangerous trend.
On Sept. 3 Columbus City Council met
to address the issue.
According to Timothy Becker, deputy
chief with the Columbus Division of Police,
83 people have died from gun violence this
year and more than 750 people have been
shot.
City leaders said the novel coronavirus
has not helped the issue.
“Our youth are overwhelmed by the
many challenges we are facing,” said councilman
Mitchell Brown, “a pandemic that
has emptied our schools, canceled extracurricular
activities; an economic crisis that
has diminished opportunities; and a number
of national incidents of police misconduct
that have undermined trust in law
enforcement. These factors have led to a
perfect storm.”
Council must address these issues and
provide relief to the city’s youth if it wants
to curb rising violence, he said.
In an effort to decrease the violence, the
city began a number of community programs.
The recreation and parks department
hosted programs and summer camps to
provide kids with positive role models to
help replace support that students may
have lost after schools closed. The department
plans to continue providing recreational
programming during the school
year. It also plans to provide active learning
sites where students can complete their
homework and access the Internet.
The department’s Applications for
Purpose Pride and Success violence intervention
program works to interrupt cycles
of violence within neighborhoods through
direct intervention as well.
The Columbus CARE Coalition helps
families cope with violent loss by providing
funeral support, connection to support
groups and coping resources. It also provides
free education to help community
members understand the impact of trauma
and build community resilience.
The city’s Violence Outreach
Intervention Community Engagement program,
in partnership with Grant Hospital,
provides bedside therapeutic intervention
to victims of violent crime.
City leaders want to use community
engagement solutions to violence rather
than relying on the criminal justice system.
“Involvement in the criminal justice system
is often times related to the trauma an
individual experiences, and there are also
racial and gender inequities we should consider,”
said councilwoman Priscilla Tyson.
According to Elizabeth Gill, a Franklin
County juvenile court judge, the criminal
justice system is not always fit to address
the root cause of violence.
Spending one night in a detention center
can decrease youth likelihood of graduating
high school by 50 percent and increase
youth likelihood of committing another
crime during their lifetime by 50 percent,
she said.
“These are all of our children. They are
not just the children of our schools,” said
Gill. “They are not just the children of
City officials discuss solutions for a rise in gun violence
CARES money for families
Mayor Andrew Ginther along with
Columbus City Council and officials from
Franklin County announced CARES Act
funding to increase family stability.
Columbus will use $6.2 million of
CARES Act dollars to help childcare
providers handle new regulations, including
reduced teacher-child ratios, reduced
maximum class sizes and new sanitization
protocols that are crucial for the health and
safety of both the children and the teachers.
Franklin County will contribute an
additional $2 million of its own CARES Act
dollars for this initiative. The combined
$8.2 million will go to childcare providers
that serve low-income children in the city.
“The struggles of this pandemic are real
and continuing,” said Ginther. “While we
are taking additional steps to slow the
spread of COVID-19, we must also do all
we can to keep families whole and stable
during this unprecedented time.”
“Access to childcare is a critical work
support for parents, just as high-quality
early learning is vital for long-term child
development,” Franklin County
Department of Job and Family Services
Director Joy Bivens said. “On behalf of our
commissioners, we are proud to partner
with the city to offer support for hundreds
of child care providers serving thousands of
children and families in communities with
the greatest need.”
In addition, more CARES Act funds will
be used for rental and utility assistance. In
May, the city announced $2.6 million of
CARES dollars to be used for rental assistance
programs through IMPACT
Community Action. The city will also set
aside just over $1 million to be used for
utility assistance grants.
“Families in Columbus continue to suffer
from the negative financial impact of
COVID-19,” said councilwoman Shayla
Favor. “It is critical that we continue to utilize
these dollars to keep our residents
safe, housed and supported.”
The city has received $157 million
CARES Act dollars from the U.S. Treasury
to provide assistance in response to the
COVID-19 pandemic. The CARES Act
funding must be used for expenditures necessary
to address public health issues due
to COVID-19.
Food waste is a complex issue that impacts
the health of our community, economy, and
environment in ways many people don’t realize.
That’s why SWACO and more than 150 partners
in the Central Ohio Food Waste Initiative
teamed up to create and launch “Save More
Than Food, Make a Difference,” a consumer
education campaign aimed at cutting food
waste - in homes, schools, restaurants and businesses
- in half by 2030.
Each day, central Ohio residents and businesses
throw out a million pounds of food. Food
waste is the largest portion of the waste stream
and accounts for 15 percent of all material in
the Franklin County Sanitary Landfill. That’s
food that could be feeding hungry people or
returned to the earth in the form of a nutrientrich
soil enhancement.
In addition to being the top material thrown
out each day, food waste also presents one of
County juvenile court, and they’re not just
the children of the parents that are raising
them. We need the entire community at our
table.”
PAID ADVERTISING
“Save More Than Food”
the best opportunities to increase Franklin
County’s diversion rate and reach 75 percent by
2032, a goal set by SWACO in 2017.
In 2018, SWACO convened non-profit, education,
government and business entities to
work together to reduce food waste in central
Ohio. Calling itself the Central Ohio Food
Waste Initiative, the group published the
Central Ohio Food Waste Action Plan in May
2019 with the ultimate goal to cut food waste in
half by 2030.
When food goes to waste, so does all of the
time, money and resources that went into producing
it. Wasted food accounts for an estimated
$106 million in economic loss in central
Ohio. In addition, 22 million gallons of gas and
41 billion gallons of water are used every year
to grow and transport food that never gets eaten.
South-Western City Schools to slash student fees
By Dedra Cordle
Staff Writer
The South-Western City Schools
District has reduced its student fee schedule
for the 2020-2021 calendar year.
At the Sept. 14 meeting, the board of
education unanimously approved the
reduction, which calls for a majority of the
fees to be slashed by 50 percent.
The decision, officials said, was two-fold.
According to Superintendent Dr. Bill
Wise, the alteration was needed due to
changes to in-person instruction and the
loss of some competitive opportunities.
“We just aren’t putting as many buses
on the roads and kids may not have as
many opportunities to participate so some
of those expenses have gone away,” he told
the board while issuing the proposal at the
meeting last month.
He added that with the students not
having the typical five-day physical presence
in the building, it did not make sense
to charge them full price for an annual consumable
fee.
Board member Anthony Caldwell said it
also offered parents a financial break in
this current environment.
“We recognize the challenges these
times are having on families,” he stated.
Under the modified fee schedule, the
instructional fee, or consumable fee, will be
set at $10 rather than the typical $20.
Other fee reductions for courses include the
arts, the sciences and several career technical
electives and programs. Art courses
offering one credit lab courses will be
$17.50, half-credit courses are set at $10,
and science fees are $5. Those taking family
and consumer science courses, such as
principles of food, culinary fundamentals
and textiles and interior design will be
charged $10.
Students involved in extracurricular
activities will also see a fee reduction of 50
percent. Families with children who participate
in athletics at the middle school level
will be asked to pay $37.50 per student, per
sport; families with children who participate
in athletics at the high school level
will be asked to pay $75 per student, per
sport.
Fees for marching band participation is
$50; club participation is $5; and the family
cap is set at $250.
High school parking fees are $25 but the
fee can be waived if a parking pass was
purchased at Columbus State Community
College for on-campus courses. Proof of a
current pass must be presented in order for
the fee to be waived.
Wise said that students or parents who
have already paid at the regular price will
be offered a refund or have the credit
applied for the future.
Franklin Township to implement a recycling program
By Amanda Ensinger
Franklin Township has implemented a
recycling program for township employees.
The program was discussed at a recent
board meeting.
The township received a Community
Waste Reduction Grant in the amount of
$1,700.
“This grant is from the Solid Waste
Authority of Central Ohio (SWACO) and
provides funds for the township to have an
in-house recycling program,” said Mark
Potts, Franklin Township administrator.
The Shamrock Club of Columbus has kicked off the Shamrock
Campaign fundraiser. For a minimum $25 donation, a shamrock
is painted on a driveway, sidewalk or porch at your home or business.
Funds raised support the many Irish cultural and music events
hosted throughout the year. The largest event the Shamrock Club
“The grant provides us with recycling
equipment so we can recycle within all the
township offices and meeting spaces.”
SWACO provided the township with
large blue recycling bins, smaller black
trash cans and recycling containers to use
in offices to separate recycling and trash
and individual recycling containers for
each employee at their desk. The cost of the
program was approximately $2,300 and the
township covered the expenses not covered
by the grant.
As part of the grant, the township needed
to promote the program to the public, as
well as through social media. Officials also
have been raising awareness about the success
of the program.
“We have received a nice reception from
staff on this program. Everyone is participating
and we are collecting more recycling
than ever before,” Potts said. “We are trying
to quantify how much trash has been
reduced from the landfill as a result of this
program.”
The township has two large recycling
containers at Township Hall and the fire
station on Sullivant Avenue, so the recycling
collected has been placed into those
containers and collected by SWACO.
“Those Dumpsters have filled up so
quickly that they have added a third one to
put recycling in,” Potts said. “This is a testament
to how much recycling is being put
in there from our staff, as well as the community.”
Potts said the goal of the township participating
in the program is to set a good
example and encourage residents to recycle.
Officials hope that this program will
continue to increase the overall recycling
rate in the township.
In 2020, SWACO awarded $194,000 in
competitive grants funding to 15 community
projects. These programs ranged from
community gardens to recycling programs
to teaching children how to compost.
Hilltop History & Heritage
This photo, featuring the Sphinx and Great Pyramids, is from the “Walk O’
Wonders” that was located in the parking lot of the Great Western Shopping Center
from the mid 1950s through the early 1970s. The attraction was created by local
artist Ivan Pusecker for the Don Casto organization and featured many replicas of
world-renowned buildings and phenomena such as a 22-foot Eiffel Tower, a 20-foot
Leaning Tower of Pisa, an eight-foot deep Grand Canyon, and the Niagara Falls.
These marvels attracted people to the shopping center, which featured a J.C.
Penney, a Kroger grocery store, and even a forerunner to the Limited called Leslie’s
Apparel, among others. The individuals shown here are not identified. If you recognize
them or have an interesting photo about the Hilltop to share, contact Stacy
Neff-Campbell at stacyberndsen12@gmail.com.

Remembering Antonia Carroll
Antonia “Toni” Carroll was the first Director
of the Franklin County Office on Aging and
retired in 2017 after 33 rewarding years.
When state funding for the predecessor of
Senior Options was halted, she and a brave band
of supporters spearheaded an effort to create a
new program funded by a property tax levy and
became what we now call Senior Options. This
new program innovatively met in-home service
needs through partnerships with for profit and
nonprofit entities and educational and human
services agencies. Under her leadership that levy
successfully passed six times and grew from a
client base of 3,000 to over 8,000. Through an
agreement with the Ohio Department of Job and
Family Services, Adult Protective Services was
added in 1999 and expanded the agency’s reach to
protect and assist the most vulnerable members of
our community.
Toni was a pioneer in the aging field and
served as a mentor, teacher and friend to many.
She tirelessly advocated for the rights of older
adults to age in place with dignity. Known for her
quick wit and sense of humor she was also
respected for her wisdom and leadership skills.
The aging profession has lost a crusader whose
indelible imprint will not be forgotten.
A celebration of life is planned for October
and details will be shared soon.
Visiting Angels provides care for our community
Governor DeWine announced over 60 percent
of COVID-19 deaths are related to LTC facilities
and families are scrambling to avoid the risk of
infection when needing to go from the hospital to
rehab or questioning the decision to transition to
assisted living. There is a great difference when
your loved one only needs to squeeze a hand
instead of pushing a button to have their needs
taken care of.
Usually 7-12 hours of home care a day is the
same as the out of pocket expense for a facility.
Visiting Angels is dedicated to helping families
fill the gaps that they are unable to help with.
Since 2005 the Grove City Visiting Angels has
provided millions of hours of care to our community
and are more prepared than ever to continue
keeping our aging population safe, healthy, and
thriving. Delivering piece of mind to the family
members is our goal for their loved ones. Even in
a facility, the average resident only receives less
than three hours of 1-on-1 attention a day and the
rest of the time is minimally monitored leaving
fall risk and other exposures highly possible.
Whether you need one hour a month for
respite or 24 hours 7 days a week support we are
here to help. Call us at 614-802-6435 for more
www.columbusmessenger.com
Romantic comedy offers warmth and humor
The opening act of “The Broken Hearts
Gallery” unspools as if it were a setup for a
horror film: After a night of heavy drinking
that culminates in a public embarrassment,
an emotional young woman steps
into an idling vehicle she believes to be her
ordered ride. Rather than listen to the male
driver as he repeatedly tells her she
entered the wrong car, she tells him to shut
up, launches into her sob story and
demands to be taken home so she can be
comforted by her supportive roommates. As
he takes her to her destination, allegedly,
she receives a text from the actual driver of
the actual car she was supposed to claim.
Realizing her error, she looks at the wrong
driver as he glances into the rearview mirror,
they make eye contact, and she gives a
small scream.
“The Broken Hearts Gallery,” however,
is not a horror movie, though it does point
out quite capably the danger of the situation
through witty banter and barbed comments.
Instead, this is a new romantic comedy
and the interaction between the two
strangers is something they like to call a
“meet cute” but with a more potentially
endangering edge.
The contrivance of its opening could put
some off of this film immediately but that
would be a mistake — not as big as getting
into a cute stranger’s car, but a mistake
nonetheless. Despite its starting point, this
is a film that is full of charm, humor and
genuine warmth; it’s kind of the equivalent
of a comforting blanket that is a little
In Entertainment
frayed around the corners.
In the film, Geraldine Viswanathan, the
scene stealer from “Blockers” (2018) and
“Miracle Workers” (2019), plays Lucy
Gulliver, the emotional young woman who
gets into a stranger’s car and whose breakdown
propels him to do her bidding. When
her day started off, she was employed as an
assistant at an art gallery, dating a fabulous
and sophisticated older man named
Max (Utkarsh Ambudkar) and ready to
impress the notable curator Eva Woolf
(Bernadette Peters) at an exhibit later that
night. When it ends, however, she is without
a job, without a boyfriend and driving
around New York City with a mysterious
stranger and a growing headache to boot.
After wallowing in self-pity for several
weeks, she is encouraged by her roommates,
the lawyer Amanda (Molly Gordon)
and the “stay at home model” Nadine
(Phillipa Soo), to move on with her life, or
at least get in the shower. They also tell
her that she needs to get rid of the trinkets
she collected from her relationship with
Max, all potential triggers for her despite
them being odd things like ties and keys.
(Her collections are a plot thread throughout
the film).
While doing so, or at least trying to, she
runs into Max and his new flame and is
saved from another publicly embarrassing
scene by Nick (Dacre Montgomery), the
handsome stranger who safely got her
home. Feeling some sort of connection to
this man, Lucy follows him to an abandoned
hotel (she is sometimes full of bad
ideas) that he is struggling to rehab and
falls in love. Not with him, of course, or at
least not so soon, but with the potential of
the hotel. She is struck by an idea and runs
it by him: allow her space to run an exhibit
for purged relationship items, or a broken
Pet Corner
The Reel Deal
hearts gallery, and she will help him raise
enough funds to finish his money pit of a
project.
Desperate for any spark to breathe new
life into his dream hotel, he relents and the
two form a partnership which slowly
becomes a friendship. And because this is a
romantic comedy, you know what follows
after but with some twists along the path
toward eternal happiness.
Teetering on the verge of being too
cutesy at times, what balances this film is
the performances from all of the actors but
most notably the charming Viswanathan
and Montgomery. They make a great pair
and have such revolving chemistry that
they really sell their characters transition
from strangers to business partners to
friends to something more.
The one thing that will likely keep people
away from this film is that it is only
being released in theaters at this time. I’m
not advocating that people rush out to see
this — it would be a great stay-at-home
movie — but I feel pretty confident that the
theaters won’t be packed for this film as it
has barely received any advertising. Still,
it’s up to you to decide your comfort level at
the theaters, but if you should ever stumble
across this film in the future, be sure to
give it a chance. Its warmth and deft
humor could provide a bit of light if you
ever need a nice escape.
Cody is a deaf
dog. Just like other
dogs, deaf dogs learn
hand commands and
tricks. While they will
never have the same recall skills as a hearing
dog, they are just as trainable and obedient
and make great pets. Cody is available for
adoption at the Franklin County Dog Shelter.
