gift on their21st birthdays <br />
they are allowedtochoose a<br />
watercolour from the works he<br />
has paintedover the years.<br />
George, 92, not only paints, he<br />
framesthe artwork himself.<br />
The former Lyndhurst farmer<br />
becameinterested in painting<br />
30 years ago and his natural<br />
talent and some learnings have<br />
resulted in manysoughtafter<br />
pieces.<br />
He is openinghis second solo<br />
exhibition at the Methven<br />
Heritage Centre tomorrow and<br />
he hopesmany people will<br />
come along to view the 18<br />
paintings that are for show and<br />
sale.<br />
George paints landscapes<br />
and some of the work being<br />
shown is of iconic spots locally<br />
and further afield. There are<br />
watercoloursofErewhon<br />
Station, Mt Hutt,LakesHeron,<br />
George Coppard with his watercolour painting of the MaoriLakes, to be exhibited.<br />
Coleridge and Tekapo and also<br />
of pony club events and stock<br />
beingmoved.<br />
George has beensorting his<br />
paintings since he and wife Lyn<br />
movedtoan<strong>Ashburton</strong><br />
townhouse from abigger<br />
property. He has spent less<br />
time working his magic with the<br />
brushes lately and put his<br />
energy into the exhibition.<br />
He has prepared all the<br />
informationfor the catalogue,<br />
including photos of the pieces<br />
for sale, and drovethem all to<br />
Methven.<br />
His first exhibition was in<br />
April last year and he was<br />
buoyed by its success.<br />
‘‘I have been painting<br />
watercolours only.Ideveloped<br />
alove for the changing colours<br />
of the hills and mountains in<br />
the years that Ifarmedat<br />
Lyndhurst and Iwanted to<br />
paint them.<br />
‘‘That was impossible, of<br />
course, only nature can create<br />
the coloursthey portray.’’<br />

watercolours required the<br />
discipline to not put too much<br />
detail into his work,<br />
deliberatelyallowingpeople to<br />
fill in the gapsintheir own<br />
minds.<br />
‘‘I love the transparency of<br />
the medium,the unexpected<br />
mixing of colours, happy<br />
accidents and simplicity of<br />
subjectmatter.’’<br />
He furthered his talent with a<br />
correspondence course in<br />
practical art. ‘‘I learntalot<br />
about art and also receiveda<br />
fresh appreciationfor it.’’<br />
George was inspired to take<br />
up art by an aunt, who painted<br />
with oils; an exhibition at the<br />
Tinwald Hall introduced him to<br />
watercolours.<br />
He was hooked.<br />
He says he hopespeoplecan<br />
find asimilar connection with<br />
his artwork.<br />
The exhibition will run until<br />
October30and George will be<br />
speaking at the opening<br />
tomorrow (<strong>September</strong> 25) at<br />
2pm.<br />
