Trick-or-treat will be
held in Groveport
By Rick Palsgrove
Groveport Editor
Trick-or-treat will still be held in
Groveport this year, but other familiar
Halloween activities in town will not take
place due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
“Trick-or-treat will be held in Groveport
on Thursday, Oct. 29 from 5:30 p.m. until 7
p.m.,” said Groveport City Administrator
B.J. King. “The state of Ohio has released
its guidance for trick-or-treat.”
Halloween events cancelled
•The popular Halloween Block Party -
which features music, popcorn, hot dogs,
doughnuts, cider, and a costume contest
and is traditionally held on Front Street
near Groveport Town Hall during trick-ortreat
- has been cancelled for this year.
In the past the block party has always
drawn a large crowd of creatively costumed
Halloween revelers who wander along
Front Street between Main and Elm
streets. Traditionally, residents in homes
along Front Street go all out with elaborate
and interesting Halloween decorations and
displays, which adds a spooky flavor to the
party.
But no block party this year.
“The block party will not be held,” said
King. “We discussed this with the Franklin
County Health Department and they
advised that due to the nature of the event
creating a gathering, that it should not
happen. We continue to put safety and
health at the forefront of making each of
these decisions.”
•Similarly, the Blacklick Park Haunted
Park, usually held in late October, has also
“The Trees and Decorations Committee
decided to cancel the haunted park for
2020,” said King. “Similar to the block
party, there are concerns about the size
crowd it would attract.”
Traditional Groveport Elementary
Halloween parade will be held
Another long time tradition, the
Groveport Elementary School Halloween
afternoon parade, where students march
down Main Street and through nearby
neighborhoods in their Halloween costumes
to the delight of parents and residents,
will be held this year.
“If we are in school, we will have two
parades to accommodate our blended
schedule,” said Groveport Elementary
Principal April Bray. “Of course, if something
happens and we aren’t able to return
to school we will not have it. I also contacted
the Groveport Police to see if they would
be willing to assist like they always do and
they are willing to help.”
Bray said one parade will be held on
Oct. 27 (“A” Group) and the other on Oct.
30 (“B” Group).
“Both parades will be in the afternoon,
but the exact time not set yet,” said Bray.
Bray said the parade route still must be
finalized, but it will most likely be a short
walk down Main Street past Town Hall
and then loop back around to Groveport
Elementary.
Bray said precautions will be in place to
protect against the coronavirus.
“We will have two parades so there will
be only about one third of the numbers who
usually participate,” said Bray. “Students
will be required to wear their mask. We
will stagger the start a little and walk six
feet apart and we will also follow the rule
of no visitors at school. Any spectator will
have to practice social distancing off of
school property down Main Street.”
This traditional Halloween parade is a
favorite of Groveport residents.
“I love seeing how excited the kids get
and I enjoy seeing all of their creative costumes,”
said Bray. “It is something the kids
always remember from their time at
Groveport. I believe it is important to create
these memories and continue traditions.
How many years has this been a tradition?
I’ve heard something like 75 years.”
State guidelines and
recommendations
The Ohio Department of Health
issued guidelines and recommendations
regarding Halloween festivities
this year due to the ongoing
coronavirus pandemic, which
include: cancelling or avoiding
hayrides and haunted houses; not
holding large Halloween parties;
wearing protective face masks and
practicing social distancing of at
least six feet; using hand sanitizer
often; avoid activities like bobbing
for apples; and select outdoor events
or those that allow staying in your
vehicle.
The Ohio Department of Health
also recommends people be cautious
regarding trick-or-treating. It suggests
holding drive through trick-ortreating
events, holding drive by
costume contests, leaving treats for
friends and neighbors, decorating
your home and hiding treats for your
kids, and holding costume contests
and pumpkin carry-offs virtually
online.
If trick-or-treating door-to-door
the department states parents
should limit the number of houses visited, wiping off
candy wrappers with sanitizer when you arrive home,
allow kids to only eat factory wrapped treats and avoid
homemade treats by strangers, and if your child is at
greater risk for COVID contact your doctor before participating
in Halloween activities. Community members
could consider leaving treats on doorsteps or on an
outside table.
Precautions: wear a mask if near others, carry hand
sanitizer for use during trick-or-treating, limit the
number of people in a group, limit those in a group to
family members, those passing out candy should wear
a mask.
City considers 2021 projects
By Rick Palsgrove
Groveport Editor
Discussions regarding the city of
Groveport’s 2021 budget includes deciding
on which public infrastructure projects to
tackle next year and beyond.
Capital improvement projects
Groveport City Council will consider the
town’s 2021-25 Capital Improvements
Plan, which includes the street maintenance
program, street system projects,
water and sewer projects, and park
improvements.
Streets being considered in 2021 under
the $400,000 street maintenance program
for work ranging from milling and filling to
spot repair to crack sealing to microsurfacing
include: Church Street; Baygrove
Court; Edge Grove Drive; Brook Alley;
Hickory Alley; Buckeye Alley; Maple
Street; and Hilly Alley (concrete replacement).
Curb and sidewalk repair are being
considered for Blacklick Street.
Proposed street system projects include
(with 2021 expenditures): West Bixby Road
pavement rehabilitation, phase 2, $1.5 million;
intersection improvements at South
Hamilton Road and Higgins/Directors
boulevard, $516,000; Groveport Road/Main
Street at State Route 317 improvements,
$160,000 with another $590,000 in 2022.
Future proposed street system projects
from 2022 to 2025 include: north Center
Street reconstruction; north West Street
reconstruction; Groveport Road widening
at Groveport Park entrance; West Bixby
Road pavement rehabilitation, phase 3.
The capital projects list for 2021 also
lists $50,000 for sidewalk repairs.
Proposed projects in 2021 for the water
system include: $60,000 for a new elevated
water storage tank that in 2022 will
require an additional $1.1 million expenditure;
$10,000 for fire hydrant upgrades;
and $13,000 for a security system at the
water plant.
Future water projects proposed for
2022-23 include: water main improvements
on Elm, Center, and West streets
west of College Street; Elm, Walnut, and
Grove streets east of College Street; and
water main replacements on the west
Grove Street and Naomi Court loop.
The budget notes $75,000 is set for various
park improvements annually.
The 2021 city budget process
City officials are approaching the town’s
2021 budget with a conservative eye due to
the coronavirus pandemic’s effect on tax
revenues and the economy this year.
Groveport City Administrator B.J. King
said the city’s income tax revenue is down
about 8 percent compared to this same
time last year. The city’s department heads
were asked to trim 15 percent from their
2021 budget proposals for their departments.
“Not all departments met that percentage,
but all budgets were reduced compared
to the 2020 budget,” said King.
“Kudos to each department director for
their work on the proposed 2021 budget.
King said with the continued uncertainty
surrounding the coronavirus pandemic,
city officials are taking a conservative
approach to the 2021 budget.
“It’s better to be safe with our budget
plans rather than have to make cuts in
2021,” said King.
Council will hear the first reading of the
2021 city budget at its Oct. 12 meeting and
discuss the budget at council’s Oct. 19 committee
of the whole meeting. The second
reading of the budget will be at the Oct. 26
meeting and council will vote on the budget
at its Nov. 9 meeting.
Council meetings are held in the municipal
building, 655 Blacklick St. Council
meetings begin at 6:30 p.m. and the committee
of the whole meeting begins at 5:30
p.m.
Groveport Road studies
Groveport City Engineer Steve Farst
said two studies will be conducted along
the Groveport Road corridor.
One is a safety study between
Greenpointe Drive and the Kroger
entrance to identify and design intersection
improvements at Greenpointe Drive
and at State Route 317.
The other is a planning study of the
thoroughfare route between Bixby Road
and State Route 317.
column
I was quite young when my great-grandmother Mazie
Palsgrove lived on the old Palsgrove farmstead on Shannon Road
in Madison Township, so I never knew her well.
I’ve learned that, among her talents, besides the variety of
work one must do on a farm, were her skills as a writer.
She wrote columns for the old Canal Winchester Times newspaper
in the mid-20th century that were warm, witty, and packed
with information that reflected on the life and times of herself and
the community.
Recently my Aunt Suzie Jones dug through a box containing
copies of many of Mazie’s columns that my grandmother, Edna
Palsgrove, had saved, and retyped them to share with the family.
“I remember Mazie writing at her kitchen table when we would
visit,” said my aunt.
According to Susie, during World War II, Mazie received letters
from soldiers serving overseas. Their parents bought the local
newspaper containing Mazie’s columns so the soldiers would have
something with a hometown feel to read.
“I guess her writing made them feel like they were home for a
little while,” said Suzie. “I love reading about her life. I have
learned how hard she and (my great-grandfather) George worked
and what a happy life they had. I remember her dog Zip and there
are many stories about the Palsgrove boys. I feel like I’m getting
to know Mazie again. Her writing has educated me and has
brought much joy and some tears.”
Suzie shared two stories about Mazie:
•“Mary Bowman told me she went to Mazie’s house to pick her
up to take her to a church meeting,” said Suzie. “George was on
top of the barn repairing the roof. Mazie came out and saw George
and reconsidered going. Mary waited and finally Mazie said she
would go, but said, ‘I’ll worry the whole time I’m gone.’ They came
home and George was still on the roof. Mazie got out of the car and
looked up and said, ‘Oh my, I forgot to worry!’”
•“George was riding his horse across a bridge (I believe he was
on his way to visit a girl),” said Suzie. “As he crossed the bridge he
saw Mazie and her sisters wading in the
creek. George thought she was the prettiest
girl he had ever seen. Then he married her.”
Reading Mazie’s homespun columns are
like looking through a window of time, complete
with dashes of humor and poignancy,
about what personal life was like in the mid-
20th century. Here are some samples of her
writing:
•On friendship, from a 1943 column: “I tell
you there are so many things to make us
glad, like the flowers and the birds that
sing, but sweeter still than all of these are
friendships and old memories.”
•On World War II, from a 1943 column: “I
wish this war was over, but it has brought us
nearer to each other in our homes, our
church, and our communities. Maybe in a
few years we will look back upon these as the
years we found ourselves. After all, living is
so much more important than just making a
Amazing Mazie
living and I feel sure
that some day we will
thank God for all the
sorrows and disappointments
we are asked to meet today.”
•On cooking, from a 1943 column: “If you
have celery and it’s wilty, put it in a pan with
a teaspoon of sugar and some ice cubes and
cover it with water. After a little while you
can just hear it snap, it will be so crisp and
it’s dear, too.”
•On World War II, from a 1944 column: “Our
grief seems so way down deep sometimes
that we can hardly bear to speak of it, but
whatever our troubles are we must not let
them take us down. We are but children
grown big.”
•On saving a wasp, from a 1944 column: “I
was washing dishes today and all around
www.columbusmessenger.com
Editor’s Notebook
Rick
Palsgrove
my head flew a big wasp and I know I never invited him in. I got
scared of him and picked up a big spoon to sock him dead, but I
couldn’t do it. I dropped my hand, lay down the spoon and the
wasp sat right down on the sink and looked up at me and went to
walking right down into the suds in my dish pan. He tried so hard
to get out, so I picked up my spoon again and lifted him out. Now
I wasn’t afraid of him and he wasn’t afraid of me.”
•On fishing, from a 1945 column: “Did you ever stand along a little
creek and watch the water slip along over the little brown pebbly
bed of stones and listen quietly as it croons a low toned
melody?” ... “Billy and Tom went fishing down in old Blacklick
Creek yesterday and, besides the fish, they caught a woman’s
corset and a shoe.”
•On Sundays, from a 1945 column: “Can you imagine how awful
empty and poor this life would be if we never had any Sundays.”
•On the weather, from a 1946 column: “This has been one of them
dripping days, rain and rain. Dark clouds covered the sky and the
sun hid. The little raindrops looked so pretty when they smiled at
me as they dropped past my kitchen window where I stood working
and as they fell gently to the ground.” ... “There is always
something to be done or said no matter what the weather that will
add to the world’s stock of gladness, always somebody needs just
what you have to give.”
•On the passing of my great-uncle, and her son, Harold Palsgrove,
who died in the Pacific Theater during World War II, from a 1946 column:
“I’m so very happy. But my happiness is all mixed with tears
for a part of me lies in a grave over there in Townsville, Australia.
Harold won’t be coming back, but he is always with me, never out
of my mind. But God and I, we can go on and smile for the rest of
the family.”
“Mazie was a delightful woman,” said Suzie. “She loved everyone.
When she set the table for dinner many times she would set
an extra plate in case somebody would drop by. Somebody usually
did. I marvel at how hard she worked as a farmer’s wife. She
appreciated everything. The world needs more Mazies.”
Yes, the world could use more Mazies.
Groveport Madison and the State Report Card
By Rick Palsgrove
Groveport Editor
Like most everything else in 2020, the
Ohio Department of Education’s State
Report Card results are affected by the
impact of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
No overall letter grades were assigned
report, but according to Groveport Madison
High School’s Communications Director
Improvements are scheduled to begin at
two Scioto River boat access locations in
Pickaway County, according to the Ohio
Department of Natural Resources Division
of Wildlife.
Construction began in September and
will last through late fall or early winter.
Both locations will be closed during construction.
The locations under construction
include one in South Bloomfield at State
Route 316, and another at the Elmon
Richards Wildlife Area boat ramp. Once
completed, these ramps will provide boater
access to many miles of prime fishing,
hunting, and wildlife viewing areas. The
Scioto River corridor is home to a diverse
number of species including bald eagles,
beavers, mink, spotted bass, smallmouth
bass, and flathead catfish.
The South Bloomfield location is scheduled
to receive a new concrete boat ramp.
The new access will include a gravel drive
and parking lot to accommodate small
trailers. This ramp is designed for paddle
crafts and small boats and will be similar
to the existing Mackey Ford Wildlife Area
ramp six river miles upstream.
Elmon Richards Wildlife Area ramp in
Circleville at State Route 22. The current
ramp was built in 2005 and the concrete will
be reconfigured to better accommodate boats.
The gravel drive will be replaced and
drainage improved to fix low, often wet areas.
This ramp is 10 river miles downstream from
the new South Bloomfield access.
The project is funded through a gas tax
on marine fuels and the Sport Fish
Restoration Act, an excise tax on fishing
equipment administered through the
Division of Wildlife and U.S. Fish &
Walnut Woods Metro Park officials
recently hired a company to remove
a large number of invasive callery
pear trees that took root in a 30-acre
area in the park near its border with
Groveport’s Heritage Park. “We just
removed the invasive callery pear
tree from the area. The workers completed
that area and it looks great,”
said Walnut Woods Park Manager
Mindi McConnell. “We were happy to hear that there were many native tree species
mixed in with the invasive species. So we will let those native trees grow and reforest
the area.” The callery pear tree originated in China and southeast Asia and was
imported to the United States in the 1960s as an ornamental tree. The tree is now
considered an invasive species of tree by arborists because it drives out native
species. Pictured here is an area recently cleared of the callery pear tree.
super hard getting our kids ready.”
Though no overall grades were issued by
the state for districts this year, Warner
noted that five years ago Groveport
Madison had received an “F” grade, but
progressed to a “solid ‘C’” at the point
grades were last issued.
“We’ve made progress and have used the
investment the community has made in the
schools to increase student achievement,”
said Warner.
Warner said one difficulty the district
faces is the transient nature of its student
population as nearly one-fifth of its students
leave the district before the school
year is completed.
“It’s primarily our English language
The city of Groveport’s 2020 income tax
revenue as of Aug. 31 is $10.6 million,
which is 9.5 percent lower than the same
time in 2019. Income tax revenues comprise
the largest portion of the city’s total
revenues year-to-date, or 56.2 percent of
all revenues, according to Groveport
Finance Director Jason Carr.
Carr reported that, as of Aug. 31, the
city’s total fund balances were $16.4 million,
which is an increase of $678,807 from
learners,” said Warner of the students who
leave. “It’s hard to maintain consistency
and it effects long term systemic change.”
Warner also noted that only 40.8 percent
of the district kindergarten students
are literacy ready when they enter school.
He said this points to the need for pre-K
school program for all students. Right now,
he said, the district only offers a special
needs pre-K program.
“We need more emphasis on our little
learners,” said Warner. “The district is
looking at what it can do for young parents
with support with online resources.”
A different kind of Apple Butter Day this year
By Rick Palsgrove
Groveport Editor
Apple Butter Day will not be the same
this year, but the spirit of the day can live
on in the community in spite of the ongoing
coronavirus pandemic.
The festival has been a mainstay and
focal point for the community since October
1974 when it began as a simple gathering of
friends cooking apples over an open fire in a
church parking lot. One can just sense the
in the autumn air as September turns into
October that it is time for Apple Butter Day.
The festival has grown over the years,
with the city’s help, into the large, popular
festival it has become.
However, like many things in this coronavirus
pandemic dominated year,
Groveport’s Apple Butter Day is going to be a
lot different this year. A whole lot different.
This version of Apple Butter Day
“It’s going to be scaled down,” said
Groveport City Administrator B.J. King.
King said he and representatives of the
Groveport Heritage Society met with the
Franklin County Health Department to
come up with a way to somehow make
Apple Butter Day happen this year.
The result is that this year the festival
itself will not exist as there will be no craft
booths, no historical displays, no bands, no
entertainment (except for the possibility of
piped up bluegrass music), no public attendance,
no anything at Apple Butter Day
except for the drive through sale of jars of
apple butter.
City officials had hoped to shoot off the
unused Fourth of July fireworks on the
evening of Apple Butter Day. However, city
officials stated on Aug. 24 that the Apple
Butter Day fireworks are now cancelled.
According to information provided to the
city by the Groveport Heritage Society, jars
of apple butter will be sold for $5 per jar
from three or four drive through stations
set up along Wirt Road in front of the
Sharp’s Landing building and the log house
on Oct. 10. Buyers will drive down Wirt
Road from Main Street and be guided to a
specific pick up station and exit through
College Street or Rohr Road. There is a
limit of two jars of apple butter purchased
per family and payment is in cash only.
Those wishing to purchase apple butter
must call 614-836-3333 to order and
arrange a pick up time within a two hour
window. Pick up times are from 10 a.m. to
4 p.m. After 4 p.m. apple butter will be sold
without appointments.
A small group of volunteers made apple
butter in Heritage Park on Oct. 3.
“It’s important we keep the annual tradition
of Apple Butter Day and its unbroken
streak of being held since 1974, even
though it is significantly different this
year,” said King.
Remembering Apple Butter Day
In normal years, Apple Butter Day is
rich in tradition featuring historical
demonstrations, crafters, and great food -
especially the piping hot, freshly stirred
apple butter slathered on homemade
bread. There’s nothing like the taste of
homemade apple butter cooked over a wood
fire to make one embrace autumn.
Apples were important to Ohio’s and
Groveport’s pioneer agricultural economy
and daily life. Apples could be stored year
round and travelled well when shipped
over the rough roads or the slow moving
freight boats on the Ohio and Erie Canal.
Apples, in addition to being a refreshing
treat picked right off the tree, could be used
in many products used by the pioneers like
dried apples, apple butter, cider, apple
brandy, apple chips, and vinegar. They
were even fed to hogs, which were important
livestock to the Ohio pioneer.
The Groveport Heritage Society created
Apple Butter Day to pay tribute to the
town’s pioneer past and to educate people
about what life was like in Groveport and
nearby farms in the 19th and 20th centuries.
The festival strives to remain true
to the area’s historic roots. Apple Butter
Day has a relaxed atmosphere and it’s a
day to be spent outdoors reveling in what
fall has to offer before gray, cold November
drives everyone indoors.
Usually on Apple Butter Day, people
who have long moved away stop by the old
town to see family and friends and then
wander the festival grounds in Heritage
Park. For those who have remained in
town, it’s a chance to get reacquainted with
neighbors. Though the pandemic has interrupted
this tradition, we can still enjoy
time with close family and friends in controlled
settings of our choosing.
Remember, Apple Butter Day encourages
us to slow down, enjoy friends and
family, embrace the pleasures of simple
foods, and reinforce our links to the past.
Keep Apple Butter Day spirit alive
Apple Butter Day encourages us to
embrace Groveport’s history, our sense of
community and sense of place. Even
though we cannot all gather together like
we usually do in Heritage Park for the festival
this year, there are things we can do
to keep the spirit of Apple Butter Day alive
in our hearts and minds. I suggest taking a
walk around town at your convenience and
discover the following:
•Historical Markers: Did you know
there are several historical markers located
in the city of Groveport? They are at: the
log house in Heritage Park; the Sharp’s
Landing building on Wirt Road; in front of
Middle School Central on Main Street;
near Groveport Town Hall on Main Street;
in Blacklick Park; and at Canal Lock 22 in
Groveport Park. Take a history walk and
check them out! While you are out and
about, also go see the sculpture of Cruiser
and John S. Rarey at the Groveport
Recreation Center.
•The Groveport Log House: A center
piece of Groveport history is the 1815 era
Groveport Log House. The log house originally
sat on the southwest corner of Main
and Madison streets, where the Groveport
Post Office is now. Workers found the log
house as they were dismantling it in 1974
to make way for the Post Office. Volunteers
from the Groveport Heritage and
Preservation Society pitched in to preserve
the house and in 1974, with help from the
United States Army Corps of Engineers,
moved it to Heritage Park.
Over the years the log house has under
gone historical restorations and renovations,
but it remains a historical focal point
for Groveport and serves as an example of
our pioneer ancestors’ way of life. If you are
taking a walk around town, take a peek at
this piece of tangible history.
•Apple orchard: A few years ago, the
Groveport Parks Department planted 30
apple trees in the Palm Pond area of
Heritage Park. The trees will potentially
offer a variety of apples including Golden
Delicious, Granny Smith, Wealthy,
Haralred, Gravenstein, Honey Crisp, Red
Delicious, Zestar, Gala, and McIntosh.
Our ancestors commonly planted apple
trees in Groveport in the 19th century.
Some of the trees are starting to produce
apples. Visit the orchard and check out the
growth of the trees.
•Sharp’s Landing building: Get a
glimpse of the area’s Ohio and Erie Canal
past across Wirt Road from the log house
and Heritage Park where the Groveport
Heritage Society rebuilt a 62x21 foot, one
story, brick, 19th century canal era building.
The building is believed to have been
used as a smokehouse, bakery, and ice
house that sat along the Ohio and Erie
Canal in what was once Sharp’s Landing at
the corner of Rohr and Pontius roads.
In 2015, a warehouse development
planned for the structure’s original Rohr
Road site required the more than century
old building be either demolished or moved.
The Groveport Heritage Society dismantled
the building and had the pieces moved
and reassembled at its current site. The
building represents the commercial life
that once operated along the canal.
Together We Can Overcome 5K Run
The Groveport Recreation Center will
hold the Together We Can Overcome 5K
Butter Day 5K and will look different due
building served as the high school until its last graduating class in 1970.
Southeast Branch Library open for browsing
By Rick Palsgrove
Groveport Editor
People love libraries and the ongoing
coronavirus pandemic put a crimp in that
love affair when the Columbus
Metropolitan Library system closed all its
branches on March 13.
But hope springs eternal for area book
and lovers of information because, as of
Sept. 22, the Southeast Branch of the
Columbus Metropolitan Library, located at
3980 S. Hamilton Road, opened for browsing.
“Like all CML locations, the Southeast
Branch plays a vital role in the community
it serves with services like public computer
access, Job Help, Homework Help, and
Reading Buddies,” said Gregg Dodd, director
of marketing for the Columbus
Metropolitan Library. “During the COVID-
19 pandemic, the branch has worked even
harder to meet the needs of customers with
curbside pickup and free copying, scanning
and faxing services. The Southeast Branch
and all other locations are open for limited
services. The Southeast Branch opened
ahead of 10 other CML locations.”
Dodd said the Southeast Branch is currently
open for limited services, which
includes: browsing the collection; using the
public computers; print, copy, scan and faxing;
getting job help; picking up items;
returning items; and getting Grab and Go
books.
“Curbside Pick-up remains available as
well,” said Dodd.
Curbside pickup is available Monday-
Thursday, 11 a.m.-7 p.m.; Friday and
Saturday, 11 a.m.-6 p.m., with no service
on Sunday.
If you received a notification from the
library you have items ready to pick up at
this location, you may do so with curbside
pickup. There will be no public access into
this building.
Visit columbuslibrary.org for information
or call 614-645-2275 to get the help
you need Monday through Friday from 9
a.m.-6 p.m.
Due to the pandemic, ongoing safety
precautions remain in place. According to
Dodd, the following restrictions and services
remain unavailable for customers:
•Customers over the age of five are
required to wear a face covering.
•Meeting rooms are unavailable for
booking and use.
•All in-person programming has been
paused (such as Storytimes).
•The number of customers in the building
are limited to ensure effective social
distancing. The library staff will let customers
know if they need to wait.
•There is a one hour limit on the use of
public computers.
Dodd said the normal daily attendance
at the Southeast Branch when it was in
operation before the COVID outbreak was
around 650 visits.
Wheelbarrow politics
In his recent research, Groveport Police
Officer and police historian Ernie Bell
came across an fun bit of election news in
Groveport from Nov. 9, 1916.
According to Bell, Groveport residents
W.O. Flowers and Harry Obetz had a personal
stake in the outcome of the 1916
presidential election between the incumbent
President Woodrow Wilson, a
Democrat, and his Republican challenger,
Charles Hughes.
Flowers and Obetz made a bet that
Flowers would push Obetz in a wheelbarrow
from Groveport to the Ohio
Statehouse if Hughes won and vice versa
for Obetz if Wilson won. The wheelbarrow
pushing was to begin as soon as the presidential
contest was decided.
Wilson defeated Charles Hughes in the
election, however news reports at the time
stated there was no indication that Obetz
made good on the bet.
