Support | DCODefence Community OrganisationExperience our Own ‘Backyard’We look forward to seeing more Darwin families atour next Meet us in the CommunityWith the lifting of some of theprevious COVID-19 restrictions,Defence Community OrganisationDarwin has enjoyed running faceto-facecommunity engagementactivities again for ADF families.Some of the activities included:Absence from home anddeployment supportADF families had a great time at DCO Darwin’s ‘Absencefrom Home’ school holiday events. ADF children enjoyed interactiveteam building with Corrugated Iron Youth Arts Centre,who taught circus tricks and acrobatics. Families also got intothe action of laser tag at Zone 3. Parents were able to connectsocially at both events while the children had a great timehanging out and sharing their stories.Meet us in the communityADF families in Darwin recently came along to our event‘Meet us in the Community’ in Wanguri Park. Families relaxedwhile listening to the Australian Army Band play some greattunes as part of the City of Darwin’s Twilight Series. AdvertorialLuke GoslingVictory in the Pacific – the End of World War IIOn Saturday, 15 August, Territoriansgathered at the USS PearyMemorial to mark the 75th Anniversaryof Victory in the Pacific. The Territorywas our nation’s front line of WorldWar II. Darwin sustained Japanesebombing in 1942-43 as did othertowns and cities across the North.Many Territorians served in the warand of the 12,000 veterans still withus in Australia, we honour the threeliving in the Territory today.Charlie enlistedin 1939 in the2nd/8th InfantryBattalion, in Victoria.One of the first to step forward wasCharlie Parrott, now of Howard Springs.Charlie enlisted in 1939 in the 2nd/8thInfantry Battalion, in Victoria. He fought inPalestine, Libya, Greece and his ship wastorpedoed in the Mediterranean. He wascaptured by the Germans on Crete, takento Germany and then Poland, where hewas forced to work in a coal mine. Afterthese terrible hardships, he managed toget back to England after the war. Knownto all as “Cheeky Charlie”, it is his positivenature that got him through those hardtimes and his years of work and serviceto the Territory.We salute Syd Kinsman of AliceSprings, a Rat of Tobruk. Syd was sent tothe Middle East in the 2nd/48th InfantryBattalion, and endured the eight-monthsiege of Tobruk, holding out againstRommel’s Afrika Korps. He was then sentto Syria and was captured at El Alamein.He escaped from a work camp in Italy,walked across the Alps, and got back tothe Allied side through Switzerland. Sincearriving in Alice Springs in 1948 he hasdevoted his life to service to the Alice´ Luke Gosling MP presenting a commemorative medallion to World War II veteran Austin Asche AC QC at the servicefor the 75th Anniversary of Victory in the PacificSyd Kinsman of Alice Springs, a Rat of TobrukSprings community, as a volunteer firefighter, creator of May Day Parade floats,life member of the Alice Springs ShowSociety, member of the RSL, and contributorto Legacy and The Salvation Army.The Christmas lights at his home are anannual Alice Springs institution.Austin Asche AC QC joined theRAAF in 1944 at the age of 18 andworked as a radar operator on islandsoff the Kimberleys, keeping the northernapproaches to Australia safe. Austinalso served here in the NT on BathurstIsland, which was handy, as he was raisedin Darwin. Austin graduated in law inVictoria and worked as a barrister in bothQueensland and Victoria. He became ajudge in Victoria in 1976. He returnedto Darwin in 1986 as a Judge of theSupreme Court and was appointed ChiefJustice in 1987. He was Chairman of theUniversity College of the NT 1986–88,and Chancellor of the Northern TerritoryUniversity 1989-93. He was Administratorof the Northern Territory 1993–96.Perhaps there are yet others thathave never spoken of their service – toall who served and to those who paid theultimate sacrifice, we honour and thankyou. We remember too, the families andwidows of the brave Australians who didnot return home.We are indebted to the generationwho helped shape our nation and whowe are today.We salute Charlie Parrott, Syd Kinsmanand Austin Asche – truly great Territorians,serving our community and our nation, intime of war and in time of peace.Luke Gosling OAM MP is the Federal Memberfor Solomon (representing Darwin andPalmerston)October/November 2020 9
