Here are some photosto show you what we have been up to.It has been wonderful to meet all the new familieswho have visited the centre for the first time or attendedone of our activities. Darwin has certainly provided beautifuldry season weather to allow us to enjoy all the hidden gems.One activity was the Ladies Dinner we hosted at the newlyopened Picnic at Cullen Bay indoor venue. We were treated toa beautiful picnic setup, delicious food and thanks to the highnumbers in attendance, lots of great company!We have an amazing team of volunteers who all go aboveand beyond our expectations to support other Defence Families.We are so grateful for them! These delegatesallow DFA to advocate for Defencemembers and their families at a locallevel.Getting help with yourJob Hunt, working with Recruiters and/ orCareer CoachesBoth Recruiters and Career Coaches can help you landthe perfect job but the roles they perform are quite differentalthough complimentary. This can be a confusing field initiallywhen you first look into it as they can both go by a varietyof similar names, recruitment agent, employment consultant,employment advisor, job network provider, etc. The way to tellthe difference between the two quickly and easily when youare doing your research is to identify who pays them for theirservices.A recruitment consultant/ agent,we will refer to them here as recruitersfor the purposes of simplification,is paid by the employer. They arepaid a commission based on the feethe recruitment company charges theemployer – normally a percentage ofthe annual salary you are offered. Acareer coach/ consultant/ practitioner(coach) on the other hand, is paid by you for the services youchoose to receive.So when and why would you choose one or the other? Andcan you use both? The simple answer is yes, you can use both,if you need to, and we will start by looking at coaches becauseas you will see this is the natural progression of your job search.A coach works for you; they are a great option when youhave been out of work for a while, or you are looking at achange in career. Think of a coach as a support team, guidingand advising you to the best outcome for you.Depending on their area of specialisation they can:» produce a new resumé or curriculum vitae» help build your online profileA coach works for you;they are a great optionwhen you have beenout of work for a while» review your job search strategy» identify your transferable skillsYou don’t necessarilyhave to be in the samephysical location asyour coach to get greatresults.» they can help you prepare for an interview» identify gaps in your skills or further training that you needto develop to land your perfect job» help you plan your career progression.Not all providers offer the same rangeof services. Some may create a fantasticnew resumé for you and advise you onupdating your LinkedIn profile, but may notbe as knowledgeable on career options inyour chosen field or how to leverage yourstrengths. So, before you start make sureyou know what you want to achieve. Anotherthing is that career coaching can be a largely unregulated field,so it pays to do your research and ask for testimonials as wellas a clearly itemised quote specifying what services are coveredand the timeframes involved. You can look for a registeredcoach to assist you with Career Development Association ofAustralia, or alternatively ask friends for recommendations onwhom they have worked with. You don’t necessarily have to bein the same physical location as your coach to get great results.As with any professional service we would recommenddiscussing your requirements with a couple of coaches to seewhom you feel most comfortable and confident with, someoneto whom you feel you can talk freely, openly and honestly. Youwill get the best results with a coach withwhom you have a good rapport.The services offered by coaches generalfall within the professional employmentservices category of the employmentassistance offered by the ADF to DefencePartners through the DCO PEAP programand may be funded as long as they meetthe eligibility criteria.
