Young pupils eye new classroom<br />

Kaiapoi <strong>North</strong> School’s twoyear<br />

wait for anew classroom<br />

block is nearly over.<br />

The school’s new entrant/<br />

year 1pupils are looking<br />

forward to moving into their<br />

new classrooms, which<br />

replace ablock of two<br />

classrooms destroyed by arson<br />

in November 2018.<br />

Principal Jason Miles says<br />

the classrooms will be<br />

officially opened with aMaori<br />

blessing tomorrow, with the<br />

children due to move in on<br />

Friday, <strong>October</strong> 30.<br />

‘‘The children are very<br />

excited to see that new space<br />

finally completed. It’s been a<br />

long time watching that being<br />

constructed, so it will be good<br />

to finally enjoy it.’’<br />

Brosnan Construction has<br />

been working on the project<br />

and Mr Miles says the firm has<br />

done an amazing job.<br />

‘‘They’ve had afew<br />

challenges along the away, but<br />

they’ve done agreat job to get<br />

it ready this term.’’<br />

The new classrooms are<br />

‘‘beautifully set up’’, with two<br />

separate class spaces, shared<br />

areas, akitchen area, art<br />

space, and averanda for<br />

outdoor learning and<br />

activities, Mr Miles says.<br />

The 36 new entrant/year 1<br />

pupils and two teachers have<br />

been operating from a<br />

temporary classroom block,<br />

which will be removed from<br />

the school during summer.<br />

The ground underneath will<br />

be regrassed and turned back<br />

into aplay area.<br />

The Hurunui District Council<br />

has secured more fundingto<br />

continue acampaign to ensure<br />

campers act responsibly in the<br />

district.<br />

TheMinistry of Business,<br />

Innovation and Employment<br />

has approved $185,705 of<br />

funding fromthe Responsible<br />

Camping Fundtoassist council<br />

efforts.The council trialled the<br />

initiative last season after<br />

getting ministryfunding.<br />

willallow the council to<br />

continue itsmonitoring and<br />

ambassadorwork in the<br />

Cheviot and Gore Bay area for<br />

asecond season.<br />

It willalso helpextend<br />

monitoringand enforcement<br />

worktoHanmer Springs,<br />

Waipara, Scargill and<br />

Amberley Beach.<br />

“Wefoundimproved<br />

behaviouramong freedom<br />

campers in theareas wherewe<br />

haveused responsiblecamping<br />

funding. We havealsonoticed a<br />

reduction in complaints where<br />

ambassadors havebeen<br />

working,’’ Mr Brown says.<br />

Thefunding, whichwill be<br />

usedduring the peak summer<br />

camping season, will also be<br />

usedfor extrasolidwaste<br />

collection and waste disposal<br />

at camping sites, as well as<br />

additional toilet servicing.<br />
